Flow cytometric estimation of low-density neutrophil antibody labeled and non-labeled phagocytosis assay in patients with periodontitis
...Show More Authors

Background: Neutrophils destroy pathogens via phagocytosis. Neutrophils are effective innate and acquired immunity phagocytes. Low-density neutrophils are distinct neutrophil phenotypes linked to several systemic and infectious diseases. To our knowledge, low-density neutrophil phagocytosis in periodontitis has not been examined. Opsonized and non-opsonized fluorescent beads mixed with low-density neutrophils were gated and analyzed by flow cytometry to count cells that consumed at least one bead.

Aims of the Study: To estimate the potential impact of antibody (Ab)-labeled and non-labeled phagocytosis capacity of low-density neutrophils in the 60 patients with periodontitis compared to 40 patients with healthy periodontium.

Methods: Blood samples were collected from 100 subjects with no systemic diseases and allocated into a periodontitis group of sixty unstable periodontitis patients compared to a control group of forty subjects with healthy periodontium. Flow cytometry was used to estimate both groups’ Ab-labeled and non-labeled phagocytosis assays of low-density neutrophil groups.

Results: Ab-labeled and non-labeled low-density neutrophil phagocytic assays showed no significant difference (p-value > 0.05) between research groups. In both study groups, low-density neutrophils had higher Ab-labeled phagocytosis than non-labeled. A significant positive correlation was observed between Ab-labeled and non-labeled phagocytosis in the control group.

Conclusion: Low-density neutrophils express the same labeled and non-labeled phagocytic index in both groups (periodontitis and control). However, the intra-group comparison revealed enhanced Ab-labeled phagocytosis compared to non-labeled phagocytosis in both groups (periodontitis and control).

:Background: Many studies had stated that there are marked variations in the clinical presentation of depressive states between different cultures. Objectives: The main aim of the study is to identify the symptoms profile of patients with major depressive disorder living in Baghdad.Method: Ninety two patients with major depressive disorder consulting Ibn-Rushd psychiatric teaching hospital were studied thoroughly to identify the frequency of symptoms among them. The fifth edition of the Arabic version of the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I) was used to identify the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual – fourth edition (DSM-IV) symptoms. A list of other symptoms, which were found to present variably in depression acco

The Role of Metformin in patients with Primary Hypothyroidism
...Show More Authors

Background: Insulin resistance is present in 50% or more of patients with primary hypothyroidism. Metformin can decrease TSH levels in these patients by a complex matter, this can be of great help in clinical practice.

Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the effect of metformin in reducing TSH levels in patients with primary hypothyroidism.

Methods: Hundred patients with primary hypothyroidism, 82 females, 18 males were included in this study, everyone was followed up for two months after adding metformin 850 mg twice daily in addition to thyroxin.

Results: 36 patients (36%) have a normal baseline TSH and no change after 2 months, 64 pa

Static Shear Strength of a Non-Prismatic Beam with Transverse Openings
...Show More Authors

In this study, a predicated formula is been proposed to find the shear strength of non-prismatic beams with or without openings. It depends on the contributions of concrete shear strength considering the beam depth variation and existing openings, shear steel reinforcements and defines the critical shear section, the effect of diagonal shear reinforcement, the effect of inclined tensile steel reinforcement, and the compression chord influence. The verification of the proposed formula has been conducted on the experimental test results of 26 non-prismatic beams with or without openings at the same loading conditions. The results reflect that the predicted formula finds the shear capacity of non-prismatic beams with openings, it is co

A plate-based assay system for analyses and screening of the Leishmania major inositol phosphorylceramide synthase
...Show More Authors

Sphingolipids are key components of eukaryotic membranes, particularly the plasma membrane. The biosynthetic pathway for the formation of these lipid species is largely conserved. However, in contrast to mammals, which produce sphingomyelin, organisms such as the pathogenic fungi and protozoa synthesize inositol phosphorylceramide (IPC) as the primary phosphosphingolipid. The key step involves the reaction of ceramide and phosphatidylinositol catalysed by IPC synthase, an essential enzyme with no mammalian equivalent encoded by the AUR1 gene in yeast and recently identified functional orthologues in the pathogenic kinetoplastid protozoa. As such this enzyme represents a promising target for novel anti-fungal and anti-protozoal drugs. Given

Effect of fungal microbiota on RANKL and sclerostin in patients with Crohn's disease
...Show More Authors

The etiology of Crohn's disease (CD) is still unknown. However, many factors, including a dysregulated immune system, altered microbiota, inheritance, and environmental factors, have been implicated. This work was conducted to estimate the effect of fungal microbiota on two bone mineral density markers, RANKL and sclerostin, in addition to the correlation between these markers and vitamin B12, D3, and zinc in CD patients, along with their potential effect on fungal microbiota and vice versa. Peripheral blood and carry-Blair Stool samples were collected from 88 participants (60 newly diagnosed with CD without treatment and 28 healthy controls) to detect serum levels of RANKL and sclerostin, and culture media were used to grow, isolat
