Background: Dysentery is an important cause of morbidity and mortality associated with diarrhea. About 10% of all diarrheal episodes in children less than 5 years are dysenteric, but these cause about 15% of all deaths attributed to diarrhea.
Objective : To demonstrate the most common pathogens causing bloody diarrhea in children between 2 months and 5 years old, to describe some of the associated factors accompanying bloody diarrhea and to highlight the most important clinical features.
Patients and methods: A descriptive study of 82 children, between the age of 2 months to 5 years with bloody diarrhea, who were admitted to the Children Welfare Teaching Hospital/ Medical City/Baghdad during the period between 1st of March 2009 to 28th of February 2010. Information regarding demographic data was taken from their parents. All the patients were examined carefully mainly for the signs and degree of dehydration. General stool examination and stool culture done for patients with bloody diarrhea. Other 100 patients with acute watery diarrhea were also taken as a comparison group.
Results: Entamoeba histolytica trophozoite was the most common isolated pathogen in the study group specimens. It was identified in 38 (46.3%) of patients followed by Shigella species in 10 (12.2%) cases and the least was non typhoidal salmonella in 5 (6.1%) cases. The most vulnerable age was 2-24 months 51(62.2%) cases. Fifty eight and half percent of patients were from urban areas. Half of the patients (50%) were bottle fed. The majority had chlorinated tap water supply (82.9%). This study showed a higher frequency of the following symptoms: Fever (73.2%), Tenesmus (46.3%), Rectal prolapse (1.2%) and convulsion (4.9%) in patients with bloody diarrhea; while in patients with watery diarrhea, the frequencies of these symptoms were: (62%, 28%, 0% and 1% respectively), Severe dehydration was observed in only (15.9%) of cases and the majority of them were seen in patients with bacterial bloody diarrhea.
Conclusions: Entamoeba histolytica was the most frequent offending pathogen in patients with bloody diarrhea in this study. Infants 2-24 months old were the main affected group. Bottle feeding preference, and non-boiling of drinking water made children more prone to have bloody diarrhea. High fever and tenesmus were the most frequent clinical symptoms associated with bloody diarrhea. More frequent bowel motions, high fever, and convulsion were all more commonly seen with bacterial bloody diarrhea than in amebic bloody diarrhea.
Collapsing building structures during recent earthquakes, especially in Northern and Eastern Kurdistan, including the 2003 earthquake in Cewlig; the 2011 earthquake in Van; and the 2017 earthquake near Halabja province, has raised several concerns about the safety of pre-seismic code buildings and emergency facilities in Erbil city. The seismic vulnerability assessment of the hospital buildings as emergency facilities is one of the necessities which have a critical role in the recovery period following earthquakes. This research aims to study in detail and to extend the present knowledge about the seismic vulnerability of the Rizgary public hospital building in Erbil city, which was constructed before releasing the seism
... Show MoreThis study is designed to evaluate the immune status of patients and schoolchildren with respect to Streptococcus pyogenes. A prospective study was conducted to investigate antibody against GAS in children patients and asymptomatic healthy carriers in serum samples with tonsillitis and compare antibody response (ASO) between patients and healthy carriers with tonsillitis.
Tonsillar swabs were obtained to detect the presence of GAS and blood samples were collected to determine elevated ASO titer in serum.
A total of 376 sample patients and asymptomatic healthy carriers were included in this study, 142 (37.7%) samples are GABHS positive, included 80 (56.3%) patients and 62 (43.6%) asymptomatic healthy carriers. The finding of a signi
Neuroimaging is a description, whether in two-dimensions (2D) or three-dimensions (3D), of the structure and functions of the brain. Neuroimaging provides a valuable diagnostic tool, in which a limited approach is used to create images of the focal sensory system by medicine professionals. For the clinical diagnosis of patients with Alzheimer's Disease (AD) or Mild Cognitive Impairs (MCI), the accurate identification of patients from normal control persons (NCs) is critical. Recently, numerous researches have been undertaken on the identification of AD based on neuroimaging data, including images with radiographs and algorithms for master learning. In the previous decade, these techniques were also used slowly to differentiate AD a

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the seasonal variation and sex preponderance in children with Guillian Barré Syndrome.
Patients and methods: A cross sectional study was carried out by reviewing wards’ registry of all cases with Guillian Barré Syndrome admitted to Children Welfare Teaching Hospital during a 10-year period (1999 - 2008). Age, sex, seasonal distribution, residence and outcome were analysed.
Results: Guillian Barré Syndrome was diagnosed in 217 (126 boys, 91 girls) patients and the annual hospital rate of admission was 22.9 /100000 children. There was increase annual incidence from 1
This research involves the preparation of new ligands 1,1,2,2- tetrakis (sodium acetate thio)ethylene(L1) and 1,1,2- tris(sodiumacetatethio) ethylene(L2), through the reaction of disodium thioglycolate) with tetra chloro ethylene or tri chloro ethylene in (1:4) or (1:3) moler ratio . Homodinucliar complexes of general formlu [M2(L1)] and [M2(L2)ClH2O] , when M= Co(II), Ni(II), Cu (II) and Zn(II) also mono nuclear complexes of general formula [M(L2)] . The prepared complexes were characterized using spectral method (UV/Visible/ IR) , metal content analysis , magnetic and atomic measurements . The spectral and magnetic measurement indicats that some complexes have tetrahedral or square planar complexes environtment .
Summary:
Background: The acute lymphocytic leukemias (All) make up about 76% of children leukemias . lymphoid leukemias occur more often than expected in patients with immunodeficiency , chromosomal abnormalities & ataxia telangiectasia . A number of chnges occur in preneoplastic & neoplastic cells as the progress towards a greater degree of malignancy . Nuclear DNA may be used as an aid in diagnosis , to predict prognosis & to determent of certain neoplasia.
Aim of the work: is to purify DNA from whole blood of predict & normal children & to characterize it by spectral studies.
Patients & Methods: Fifteen EDTA-treated blood samples of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and the same number f
Aim of the study is to find any correlation between obesity (insulin resistance) and type I diabetes in children. Obesity and diabetes mellitus are the common health problems, and obesity is common cause of the insulin resistance. The results revealed marked increased in glucose, insulin, HbAlc and insulin resistance in obese diabetic type I patients comparing to control group they were obese and non-obese found to be within normal values for glucose, insulin, FIbAlc , and insulin resistance.
This study aimed to isolate and phenotype lymphocytes in untreated children patients with chronic allergic asthma. To reach such aim the study involved (25) patients from children (17 male and 9 female) whom their ages where between (3-10) years, in addition to (15) apparently healthy children (9 male and 6 female) in the same ages involved as control group. The data demonstrated that there was a significant increase in the mean percentages of T-lymphocytes (CD3+ cells) in the peripheral blood of patients (66.75±0.29)**, in comparison with control group (43.58±0.19), a significant increase in the mean percentages of T-helper lymphocytes (CD4+ cells) in the pe

The treatment is usually supportive, so epidemiology, clinical, laboratory, and radiologic findings might facilitate early diagnosis and treatment of bronchiolitis cases.
Objectives: The aim of our study was to evaluate the clinical characteristics and laboratory findings of children hospitalized due to bronchiolitis.
Patients and Methods: In this cross sectional study 143 patients with bronchiolitis were selected who age 1-24 months old who were admitted to the Fallujah teaching hospital for women and c
