Background: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common in dialysis patients, are associated with increased rate of complications, and may be difficult to diagnose due to often subclinical presentation.
Objectives: To examine theprevalence of urinary tract infections in hemodialysis patients with renal failure, and to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of pyuria as a screening test in hemodialysis patients.
Patients and Methods: A total of forty hemodialysis patients (27 males and 13 females) with renal failure were selected according to the study criteria. Clean-catch mid-stream urine specimens were obtained from study patients, their urinalysis and bacterial culture were performed according to standard techniques. Bacteriuria is defined as detection of 105 cfu/ml of a single microorganismin culture of urine specimens.Pyuria is defined as the presence of 10 neutrophils per high power field of voided mid-stream urine.
Results: Urine from 25(62%) patients had no significant organism growth, whereasurine from 15(37%) patients grew 105 cfu/ml; 6 patients had been infected with E. coli, 5 patients with Klebsiella spp., one patient with Acinetobacter, one patient with α-hemolytic Streptococci, one patient with coagulase negative Staphylococci, and one patient with Proteus spp.. Fourteenout of 40 (35%) patients had pyuria and only 9 (64%) out of 14 patients had a positive urine culture for infection. The sensitivity and specificity of pyuria screening for UTI was 60% and 80%, respectively. The positive and negative predictive values are 64% and 77%, respectively.
Conclusions: The result of this study demonstrates that pyuria was a good marker for significant bacteriuria in these patients. Cultural techniques are needed for susceptibility testing of bacterial isolates to guide antimicrobial therapy. The antimicrobial susceptibility tests in this study revealed that Amikacin, Gentamicin, Ceftazidime, Cefoxitin, and Imipenem act well on isolated bacteria.

Objectives: To reveal the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on otolaryngology symptoms using our daily medical practice.
Subject and Methods: A cross-sectional study that was carried on in the isolation wards at Al-Kindy and Al-Nu’man Teaching Hospitals during three months from the 1st of Jun. till the end of Aug. 2020. It included 1270 patients who were diagnosed with COVID-19 infection seen in the ENT consultation clinic and admitted to the isolation wards.
Results: Otolaryngological manifestations were shown

Show MoreThe activity of Alanine aminopeptidase( AAP ) was measured in the urine of healthy and urinary tract cancer patients , the results showed higher activity of (AAP) in patients compared to healthy . AAP was Purified from the urine of healthy and patients with urinary tract cancer by dialysis and gel filtration (Sephadex G – 50) and two isoenzymes of (AAP) were separated from urine by using ion-exchang resin (DEAE – Sephadex A – 50 ) in previous study. The kinetics studies showed that both isoenzymes I and II obeyed Michaelis – Menton equation . with optimal concentration of alanine-4-nitroanilide as substrate for isoenzymes I and II which was (2 x 10-3 mol/L ). The two isoenzymes obeyed Arrhenius equation up two 37° C and t

Background: Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a heterogeneous disease with an extremely variable course. Survival after diagnosis can range from months to decades and wide variability exists in the rate of disease progression and the incidence of disease-related complications among patients with CLL. Staging helps to define prognosis and to decide when to initiate therapy.
Objective: To asses response to oral alkylating therapy and to evaluate the adverse events that can complicate the disease itself or the treatment, including infections, autoimmune and other complications. The survival events are also been assessed.
Patients and methods: Forty nine Iraqi CLL patients, their age ranged between 40-90 years were followed with me
End Stage Renal Disease is a well-known global public health problem. Maintenance hemodialysis is considered a life-saving treatment for patients with such disease. This treatment method that requires patients to be adherent to hemodialysis attendance, dietary and fluid recommendations as well as adherence to prescribed medications to ensure success. The aim of the current study was to assess adherence, perception, and counseling among hemodialysis patients to different modalities of treatment (fluid restriction, dietary recommendations, medications, and hemodialysis schedules). A cross-sectional study carried out on hemodialysis patients who attended to the dialysis centers at al- Karama teachi

Intestinal amoebiasis can present as a chronic, dysenteric syndrome of diarrhea, weight loss, and abdominal pain that can last for years and mimic ulcerative colitis.
Objective: Studying the prevalence of E..histolytica by using serological method ELISA for their detection, Investigate the possible role of E.histolytica as a cause of blood, diarrhea in non-ulcerative colitis group &Comparison between serological detection of E.histolytica and stool examination.
Patients and Methods: Retrospective and prospective study was conducted
he present work, among other previous studies done in our lab, aimed to highlight the histopathological effect of S. xylosus peptidoglycan in comparison to LPS of E. coli. Materials and methods: One hundred and fifty urine specimens were collected from urinary tract infection patients visiting Baghdad hospitals. The histopathological effects of S. xylosus S24 peptidoglycan was studied in the urinary tract of female mice by injecting 5 animal groups at the following concentrations: 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, and 5000 µg/mL. Another 5 groups were injected with 10, 25, 50, 75, and 100 ng/mL of E. coli (serotype 0128:B12) LPS. Results: Ten isolates were confirmed to be Staphylococcus xylosus. Histopathological study showed different pathological
