Electroconvulsive Therapy: Attitudes and Practice of Iraqi Psychiatrists

Background: Although Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is still regarded as a controversial treatment by some people, it is an important and effective treatment. The practice of ECT is different across the world.

Objectives: to obtain an overview of the electroconvulsive therapy   practice in Iraq.

Method: Forty item self administered questionnaire about the attitude and practice of ECT, was sent (by mail or delivered by the researcher) to 73 Iraqi psychiatrists during the period from March to September, 2007.

Results: Half of participants had asked for the patient's consent, and all asked the family for the consent,    72% had asked for written consent and 28% for oral consent only.  Majority ( 81%) gave oral  information to patient's family before ECT while 36% gave oral  information to patients .

Average number of ECTs administered per patient were six, 61% perform ECT thrice weekly while 39% twice weekly. Maintenance ECT was used by 16% of participants. Bilateral ECT is exclusively used in Iraq and 74% perform unmodified ECT. Vast majority of the participants (85%) believed in application of ECT as a strongly effective treatment. The majority 79% never stop medications before ECT. Forty eight percent did routine investigations before ECT performance, The main complications associated with ECT were; amnesia (57%) headache (54%), and nine deaths were reported during the practice of the 65 psychiatrists. The main indications for ECT were depression (31%), schizophrenia  (26%)  , mania (21%) and schizoaffective(16%). Many absolute contraindication mentioned by Iraqi psychiatrists , increased intracranial pressure(79%) , space occupying lesions(74%), Myocardial infarction (64%), aortic aneurysm (56%) and below 15 years of age (41%)

Conclusion:  Iraqi psychiatrists practice of ECT is a mixture of different international experiences .A legislation and a code of practice for the use of  ECT is mandatory .

Spectroscopic and structural studies of cadmium oxide thin films prepared by D.C magnetron sputtering

Cadmium oxide thin films were prepared by D.C magnetron plasma sputtering using different voltages (700, 800, 900, 1000, 1100 and 1200) Volt. The Cadmium oxide structural properties using XRD analysis for just a voltage of 1200 volt at room temperature after annealing in different temperatures (523 and 623) K were studied .The results show that the films prepared at room temperature have some peaks belong to cadmium element along the directions (002), (100), (102) and (103) while the other peaks along the directions of (111), (200) and (222) belong to cadmium oxide. Annealed samples display only cadmium oxide peaks. Also, the spectroscopic properties of plasma diagnostic for CdO thin films were determined and the results show that the el

New Synthesis of Cyclic Imide Compounds for Ampicillin Drug and Studying Their Biological Activity

Some new cyclic imides are prepared by the reaction of ampicillin drug with different cyclic anhydrides as a first step to form amic acids for ampicillin drug. The second step includes the reaction of prepared amic acids with acetic anhydride and anhydrous sodium acetate with heating in THF as a solvent to give cyclic imide compounds. These compounds are identified by melting points, FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and biological activity

A New Spectrophotometric Method for Analysis of Allopurinol in Aqueous Solutions and Pharmaceutical Preparations

A new method for determination of allopurinol in microgram level depending on its ability to reduce the yellow absorption spectrum of (I-3) at maximum wavelength ( ?max 350nm) . The optimum conditions such as "concentration of reactant materials , time of sitting and order of addition were studied to get a high sensitivity ( ? = 27229 l.mole-1.cm-1) sandal sensitivity : 0.0053 µg cm-2 ,with wide range of calibration curve ( 1 – 9 µg.ml-1 ) good stability (more then24 hr.) and repeatability ( RSD % : 2.1 -2.6 % ) , the Recovery % : ( 98.17 – 100.5 % ) , the Erel % ( 0.50 -1.83 % ) and the interference's of Xanthine , Cystein , Creatinine , Urea and the Glucose in 20 , 40 , 60 fold of analyate were also studied .

Critical Success factors of Strategic Information system and it's relation with Strategic Decisions Effectiveness

The organization uses many techniques and methods to ensure that they will succeed and adapted with velocity change in the internal and external environment by decision taking, especially strategic decisions.

Strategic decisions are very important for organization success because it can predict the future and deal with uncertainty, in this circumstances they need accurate and comprehensive information to make effective strategic decision.

To achieve that purpose it must owned successful Strategic Information System ( SIS ) and determined the critical success factors for this system ,which can assisted the worker to focus on the important activities to develop it.

Role of Salivary Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha and Immunoglobulin- A in Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis

Background: Until today, the etiology of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) remains unknown, although hints of its etiologic basis lay on genetic susceptibility, infectious agents and alterations in immune mechanics.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the possible alterations in salivary tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and Immunoglobulin-A (IgA) level in patients with RAS and its relation with clinical types of disease.
Subjects and Methods: Salivary TNF-α levels were investigated in 50 RAS patients and 25 healthy controls by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Single radial immune diffusion method was used for estimation of IgA level in two studied groups.
Results: S

Prognostic implications of admission hyperglycemia for inhospital morbidity and mortality in acute coronary syndrome

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a well known risk factor for acute coronary syndrome but the hypothesis that patients with acute phase hyperglycemia, regardless the previous diagnosis of diabetes, have worse prognosis than those with normal glucose values is controversial. This paper aims to estimate the prevalence of admission hyperglycemia, its effect on in-hospital prognosis of diabetic and non-diabetic patients with acute coronary syndrome, and to compare it with 2nd day fasting plasma glucose as a prognostic marker.
Methods: One hundred patients, (59) diabetic and (41) non-diabetic, with documented acute coronary syndrome enrolled in this study over the period of June/ 2009-Jan./2010 from coronary c

Synthesis and Characterization of New Mannich Bases Derived from 7-hydroxy-4-methyl Coumarin

Coumarin is a natural substance isolated from different plants. It belonges to a group of benzobyrones which consists of a benzene ring joined to a pyrone nucleus. In the present research, a new series of coumarin derivatives were formed. Compound (1) (7-hydroxy-4-methyl Coumarin) was converted into 4-methylquinolin-2(H) derivative (2) by reaction with acetamide, and then reaction of (2) with thiosemicarbazide in ethanol leads to the synthesize of hydrazincarbothioamide derivative (3).The reaction of (3) with ethylchloroacetate in presence of sodium acetate leads to closure ring to get [(1-(5-oxo-2-thioxoimidazolidin-1-ylimino) ethyl)]quinolin-2(1H)-one (4). Mannich bases were prepared through the reaction of (4) with primary

Structural and dielectric properties of Zr doped BaTiO3 synthesized by microwave assisted chemical route

Lead-free ferroelectric nano ceramics of BaZrxTi1-xO3 (x=0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) were prepared by means of microwave assisted chemical route. The structural, dielectric and electrical properties were examined. The crystalline structure of the specimens was studied by X-ray diffraction patterns. All the samples showed pure single phase of perovskite structure with space group of I4/mcm. X-ray diffraction data illustrated that there is no secondary phases exist. Structural and electrical properties of barium titanate ceramics are influenced significantly by small additions of Zr. The electrical conductivity showed higher values at x=0.2 and decreased at higher Zr content. The Hall charge mobility is found
