Evaluation of Moderate Closed Head Injury by Visual Evoked Response
...Show More Authors

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a serious public health problem. Even injuries classified as mild which is the most common, can result in persistent neurobehavioural impairment. Diffuse axonal injury is a common finding after TBI, and is presumed to contribute to outcomes, but may not always be apparent using standard neuroimaging. All severities of TBI can result in a degree of axonal damage, while irreversible myelin damage was only apparent for moderate to severe TBI.

Objectives: To evaluate the effects of moderate closed head injury on visual evoked response (VER) and to assess the changes in VER 6 months later as follow up indices.

Subjects and methods: This prospective study was conducted in the Department of Neurophysiology /Hospital of Neurosurgery/Baghdad from November 2010 to February 2012, using Esoata Italian machine. Ninety three patients with moderate closed head injury (49 female and 44 male), with an age range from (5 -51) years, with a mean age of (26±11.95) years, were chosen according to Glasgow coma scale (9-12 score) undergo VER and only 86patients will  follow up by VER and both were compared to control group of 55 healthy subjects.

Results: P100 wave latency of visual evoked response (VER) was found to be significantly prolonged (P100= 145.41±9.67 msec.), in patients with moderate head injury at an early measurement after injury as compared to that of the healthy (P100= 97.66±4.58 msec.), whereas, the amplitude of P100 at an early measurements is reduced significantly (2.71± 0.77 µv) when compared to healthy subjects (7.32± 1.62 µv). By 6 months post injury the latency of P100was significantly prolonged (P100=137.19±8.45msec.) when compared to that of control group, while it is significantly reduced when compared to the patients with head injury at an early measurements. However, at 6months post injury the P100 amplitude was significantly increased (amplitude =3.26±0.62μv) when compared to the patients with head injury at an early measurement whereas, significantly reduced when compared to the control group.

Conclusion: this study revealed that head injury had serious effect on the brain functions reflected by changes in VER which needs long period of time to return to normal levels.

Therapeutic Use of Silymarin in the Management of Suspected Renal and Hepatic Injury Produced by NSAIDs in Osteoarthritis Patients
...Show More Authors

Long-term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) mostly associated with renal and hepatic adverse effects, and the adjunct use of compounds with potent protective effects, like silymarin, may be one of the choices to avoid these effects. This project was designed to evaluate the protective effect of silymarin against the suspected renal and hepatic injury induced with long term use of NSAIDs; 220 patients with osteoarthritis were randomized into 5 groups and treated with either silymarin 300mg/day alone, piroxicam 20mg/day alone, meloxicam 15mg/day alone or the combination of each of them with silymarin for 8 weeks. The renal and hepatic functions were evaluated before starting treatment and after 8 weeks including assessm

The Optimum Conditions for Production of Soya Peptone by Acidic Hydrolysis of Soya Proteins
...Show More Authors

This study was carried out to obtain the optimum conditions necessary for the process of soya protein hydrolysis by using hydrochloric acid (as a chemical catalyst) instead of the papain enzyme (as a biological catalyst), for the production of soya peptone. These conditions are implemented to test the effect of the variables of the process of hydrolysis on the nature and quality of the product.

The production of soya peptone was studied for their importance in the process of preparing and producing the culture media used in medical and microbiological laboratories.

The process of production of soya peptone includes four main

Improvement of Microhardness and Corrosion Resistance of Stainless Steel by Nanocomposite Coating
...Show More Authors

Abstract

Stainless steel (AISI 304) has good electrical and thermal conductivities, good corrosion resistance at ambient temperature, apart from these it is cheap and abundantly available; but has good mechanical properties such as hardness. To improve the  hardness and corrosion resistance of stainless steel its surface can be modified by developing nanocomposite coatings applied on its surface. The main objective of this paper is to study effect of electroco-deposition method on microhardness and corrosion resistance of stainless steel, and to analyze effect of nanoparticles (Al2O3, ZrO2 , and SiC)  on properties of composite coatings. St-Closed and Semi-extending Modules
...Show More Authors

Let R be a commutative ring with identity 1 ¹ 0, and let M be a unitary left module over R. A submodule N of an R-module M is called essential, if whenever N ⋂ L = (0), then L = (0) for every submodule L of M. In this case, we write N ≤e M. An R-module M is called extending, if every submodule of M is an essential in a direct summand of M. A submodule N of an R-module M is called semi-essential (denoted by N ≤sem M), if N ∩ P ≠ (0) for each nonzero prime submodule P of M. The main purpose of this work is to determine and study two new concepts (up to our knowledge) which are St-closed submodules and semi-extending modules. St-closed submodules is contained properly in the class of closed submodules, where a submodule N of

W-Closed Submodule and Related Concepts
...Show More Authors

Let R be a commutative ring with identity, and M be a left untial module. In this paper we introduce and study the concept w-closed submodules, that is stronger form of the concept of closed submodules, where asubmodule K of a module M is called w-closed in M, "if it has no proper weak essential extension in M", that is if there exists a submodule L of M with K is weak essential submodule of L then K=L. Some basic properties, examples of w-closed submodules are investigated, and some relationships between w-closed submodules and other related modules are studied. Furthermore, modules with chain condition on w-closed submodules are studied.
