Suppression of Insulin Secretion by Ghrelin and The Deterioration of Glucose Tolerance in Healthy Children
...Show More Authors

Background: Ghrelin, identified as an endogenous ligand for the growth hormone secretagogue receptor, functions as a somatotrophic and orexigenic signal from the stomach. The secretion of ghrelin increases under conditions of negative energy balance, such as starvation, cachexia, and anorexia nervosa, whereas its expression decreases under conditions of positive energy-balance such as feeding, hyperglycemia, and obesity. In addition to having a powerful effect on the secretion of growth hormone, ghrelin stimulates food intake and transduces signals to hypothalamic regulatory nuclei that control energy homeostasis. Thus, it is interesting to note that the stomach may play an important role in not only digestion but also as a pituitary growth hormone release and central feeding regulation.

Objective: The goal of this study was to test the hypothesis that circulating ghrelin suppresses insulin secretion in healthy children.

Subjects and methods: Enzyne-Linked immunosorbent assay method was used to assay Ghrelin and Insulin. By taking blood sample from 40 obese children, 11 overweight children and 29 normal weight healthy children their age (5-11) years.

Results: the mean concentration of Ghrelin was significantly lower in obese and overweight children than in controls ( P < 0.000 ) . The mean concentration of Insulin was significantly higher in obese and overweight children than in controls ( P < 0.007 ). Negative correlations  was obtained between Ghrelin and BMI, also negative correlation between Ghrelin and Insulin was obtained.

Conclusions: This study showed that ghrelin reduces insulin secretion and glucose disappearance in healthy children. This findings raise the possibility that endogenous ghrelin has a role in physiologic insulin secretion, and that its antagonist may improve β-cell function.

N-acetyl cysteine’s effect on semen parameters in a sample of Iraqi men with oligoasthenoteratozoospermia
...Show More Authors

Background: Infertility is recognized as the incapability of infertile couples to become pregnant following one year of unsafe intercourse, with male factors accounting for roughly half of the documented instances. Several reasons for male infertility factors have been reported; however, the actual cause in the majority of cases remains unknown.

Objective: To study prospectively the outcome of N-acetylcysteine on semen parameters in males with oligoasthenoteratozoospermia.

Patient and methods: A total 45 patients with idiopathic oligoasthenoteratozoospermia have received N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) for 12 weeks, their seminal fluid parameters were measured at the baseline and a

Clinical Characteristics and Therapeutic Management of Osteogenesis Imperfecta in Iraqi Children
...Show More Authors

Background: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare congenital condition that results in bone fragility, recurrent fractures, and various extra-skeletal manifestations. Currently, intravenous bisphosphonate is the mainstay of medical treatment in OI. Objective: To identify the effect of current management strategies on Iraqi children diagnosed with OI. Methods: A retrospective study enrolled OI patients who were registered in Central Child Teaching Hospital, Baghdad, Iraq, from January 2015 to December 2022. We enrolled confirmed OI cases (either clinically and/or radiologically) who received cyclic pamidronate therapy for at least 3 cycles. They neither received other types of bisphosphonates nor underwent surgical intervention. Res

Spinal Tuberculosis in Children
...Show More Authors

Tuberculosis continues to be the leading cause of morbidity and mortality, with an estimated annual incidence of 10.4 million worldwide. It has been estimated that 10% of patients with extrapulmonary tuberculosis have musculoskeletal involvement, with the spine being the most common. Spinal tuberculosis (TB) accounts for 50% of cases of musculoskeletal tuberculosis.

Spinal tuberculosis is the result of infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is a secondary infection, the primary lesion of which is in the lungs, genitourinary system, or gastrointestinal tract and can be active or latent. Involvement of the vertebral segment is the result of hematogenous spread of infection along the arterial pathway or Batson's vei
