Hematologic abnormalities and pregnancy outcomes in pregnant women with COVID-19
...Show More Authors

Background: Since declaring coronavirus disease 19 as a pandemic by the World Health Organization, a great concern was directed toward pregnant women and their fetuses. Despite the substantial impact of COVID-19 disease on pregnancy, there is a scarcity of national researches discussing this important issue.

Objectives: To study the relationship between peripheral blood abnormalities and COVID-19 in pregnant women.

Patients and methods: A case control study was conducted in the labour wards of Baghdad Teaching Hospital in the Medical complex / Baghdad /Iraq during the period from 1st of February till 31st of July, 2021. Fifty pregnant women diagnosed with COVID-19 disease were compared to 50 healthy pregnant women as controls. The pregnant women enrolled in the study were tested by COVID-19-Reverse transcription RT-PCR test upon admission to hospital. The confirmation of COVID-19 diagnosis was done according to the Iraqi guidelines approved by the Iraqi Ministry of Health.

Results: Dyspnea was a significant clinical presentation of pregnant women with COVID-19 disease. Those women had abnormal white blood cell count, lymphocytopenia, high neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, high platelets to lymphocyte ratio and mild to moderate anemia which were significant when compared to controls. The maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality rates were higher among pregnant women with COVID-19 disease. Abnormalities in peripheral blood system parameters like lymphocyte count, neutrophils count, platelets count and hemoglobin level were predictors of maternal morbidity and mortality.

Conclusions: The clinical presentations and hematological abnormalities are useful in the diagnosis of COVID-19 disease in pregnant women and may be used as predictors of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality.

Detection of JAK2V617F tyrosine kinase mutation and estimation of serum erythropoietin in blood donors who have high hematocrit
...Show More Authors

Background: JAK2V617F mutation is the most prevalent molecular abnormality in myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) and has become a valuable marker for diagnosis of MPNs. Almost all patients with polycythemia vera (PV) have this acquired mutation. However, it has also been found in many other hematological diseases, and some studies even detected the presence of JAK2V617F in normal blood samples.
Objectives: To discuss the actual need to defer blood donors with high hematocrit.
Patients and methods: This prospective case control study was started on 16th of December 2012 and completed on 8th of July 2013, and enrolled 94 male blood donors who attended the National Blood Transfusion Center (NBTC) in Bagh

BackgroundThe diagnosis and important aspects in treating acute abdomen during pregnancy tend to be delayed due to the peculiar physiological features of pregnancy and the restrictions imposed on imaging diagnostic techniques such as x-ray and CT.Aim of the studyTo identify the most common causes of acute abdomen during pregnancy and identifying the approaches for early diagnosis and to take a correct decision for surgery and assigning the complications that may occur during and/or after surgery for the mother and the fetus.Patients and Methods This is a prospective study that involves data obtained from 91 pregnant patients admitted in the surgical wards in Baghdad teaching hospital during the period from January 2008 to December 2009 .

Abstract

Back ground: Renal cell carcinoma is an uncommon condition that develops during pregnancy. Due to a lack of conventional norms and a dearth of literature, its management is a serious issue.

Case presentation: We will discuss a case study of a twenty-year-old female girl who is pregnant G1 P1 A0, has had five missing periods (20 weeks gestation), and has frank hematuria due to a massive, incidentally detected renal cell carcinoma. We also go through the current guidelines for treating kidney malignancies during pregnancy, as well as the imaging studies that are now available.

Conclusion: Although the best time for surgery is debatable, a mult

The correlation between HLA class II and β-thalassemia major in Al-Karama teaching hospital
...Show More Authors

Background: Thalassemia is a form of inherited autosomal recessive blood disorder characterized by abnormal formation of hemoglobin.
Objective: Determine frequencies & association of HLA class II alleles (DRB1& DQB1) in Iraqi β-thalassemia major patients.
Patients: seventy unrelated randomly selected β-thalassemia major patients, and one hundred unrelated randomly selected healthy individuals, composed the control group.
Methods: low resolution PCR-SSO (Sequence Specific Oligonucleotide) technique was used for HLA typing.
Results: HLA DQB1*5 give significance importance as an etiological risk factor for β-thalassemia major; HLA DQB1*3 give significance importance as a preventive risk factor for β-thalassemia major

Interleukin-35 in Iraqi's Menopausal Women with Osteoporosis
...Show More Authors

Osteoporosis is related to the loss of bone mass that occurs as part of the natural process of aging and in menopausal women.           The aim of this study is to evaluate the levels of interleukin-35 in menopausal women with osteoporosis, that may be used as an early predicted marker of osteoblastic and osteoclastic activity in osteoporosis patients in relation with other diagnostic parameters.           Fasting blood samples were obtained from forty Iraqi menopausal women with mean age of (61.06±6.59)years who were newly diagnosed of osteoporosis by physicians at Baghdad Teaching Hospital as patients group(G1). In addition to , twenty two healthy women were included in the st

Background: Repeated teenage pregnancy is a major burden on the healthcare system worldwide. Objective: We aimed to compare teenagers with their first and third pregnancies and to evaluate the likelihood of neonatal complications. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on female teenagers (aged ≤ 19 yr) with singleton pregnancies. The subjects (n = 298) were screened over 12 months. Ninety-six women were excluded, based on the exclusion criteria. The remaining subjects (n = 202) were divided into two groups: teenagers with first pregnancy (n = 96) and teenagers with third pregnancy (n = 47). The subjects were observed throughout pregnancy and delivery. The final sample size of the first and thi
