Early complications associated with obesity following coronary artery bypass graft surgery: Obesity and post-CABG morbidity
...Show More Authors

Background: One of the major health concerns and possible risk factors in open heart surgery is the increasing prevalence of obesity among patients.

Methodology: Over a period of sixteen months (February 2017 to June 2018), 246 patients underwent coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) in Slemani Cardiac Hospital (SCH). The patients were divided according to the WHO classification into two groups: The obese (BMI ≥ 30) and the non-obese  (BMI < 30) and were compared in regard to the rate of occurrence of early postoperative complications.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of obesity [body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 Kg/m2] on the early post-operative (coronary artery bypass graft surgery) outcome.

Results: The mean age was 69.0 years in the non-obese and 58 years in the obese group. Females constituted 46.7% of the obese group and 33.1% of the non-obese group. Both groups nearly got similar ejection fraction percentage of 58%, while hypertension was observed in 36.4% and 38.8% of the obese and non-obese groups respectively. Diabetes mellitus (DM) was reported in 54.2% of obese vs. 39.5% of non-obese patients. Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) time (72 min), aortic cross clamp time (59 min), mean perfusion pressure (67 mmHg) and number of grafts (3) were the same in both groups. Atelectasis rate (6.5%) and chest infection (5.6%) were significantly increased in obese patients. In contrast, other early post-operative complications were not statistically associated with being obese.

Conclusion: There was a higher prevalence of obesity in referred patients for CABG as well as an increased rate of early post-operative complications in the obese.

PCOS is a chronic hyperandrogenic state that has many significant short-term and long-term implications for patients such as oligomenorrhea, amenorrhea, infertility, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, increased risk of endometrial cancer, and hirsutism. Objectives: To evaluate the obesity and glycemic criteria among women with polycystic ovary syndrome. Method: A case control designed study was carried out at the National Diabetes Center (NDC) / Al-Mustansiryia University; on 50 participants formed the PCOS group and 50 healthy control participants. Data collected about age, age at menarche and BMI. Also, blood sam

Visfatin as a biomarker of obesity in iraqi adolescences with metabolic syndrome
...Show More Authors

The present study aims to study the correlation between visfatin levels and metabolic syndrome in Iraqi obese adolescence (with and without metabolic syndrome) and its relation with other studied biochemical parameters. Sixty obese adolescences were depended in this study (with and without metabolic syndrome), compared with (30) non-obese children as control group. This study was done in the period from April 2020 until the end of December 2020, in the National Diabetes Centre/Mustansiriya University, Baghdad/Iraq. There were no significant differences in age, height, waist circumferences (WC), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in the patients' groups. In contrast, a significant increase differs (p<0.05) was recorded in the values of

Correlation between Tumor Necrosis Factor–Alfa and Anti-tyrosine Phosphatase with Obesity and Diabetes Type 2
...Show More Authors

This study was done to find a correlation between adipokines such as tumor necrosis- alpha (TNF-α)  and autoantigens such as anti-tyrosine phosphatase (IA2) with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). For this purpose, one hundred forty adult males were selected. 90 of them were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and 50 healthy males). The subjects were divided into four groups. Group 1 had healthy controls with body mass index (BMI) between 18.5-25, group 2 had individuals who suffered from obesity only (BMI above 30), group 3 consisted of diabetes patients and group 4 had individuals who were diagnosed with both obesity and diabetes. The enzyme immunoassay was intended for quantification determination of TNF in serum. The

Prognostic implications of admission hyperglycemia for inhospital morbidity and mortality in acute coronary syndrome
...Show More Authors

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a well known risk factor for acute coronary syndrome but the hypothesis that patients with acute phase hyperglycemia, regardless the previous diagnosis of diabetes, have worse prognosis than those with normal glucose values is controversial. This paper aims to estimate the prevalence of admission hyperglycemia, its effect on in-hospital prognosis of diabetic and non-diabetic patients with acute coronary syndrome, and to compare it with 2nd day fasting plasma glucose as a prognostic marker.
Methods: One hundred patients, (59) diabetic and (41) non-diabetic, with documented acute coronary syndrome enrolled in this study over the period of June/ 2009-Jan./2010 from coronary c
