Scabies outbreaks during 2019 in Al- Daseem, Al-Rusafa-Baghdad: A retrospective study

Abstract

Background: Scabies is a skin infestation by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. Scabies is transmitted through close personal contact. Settings like hospitals, prisons and childcare centers are at greater risk of outbreaks. Both male and female may be infected with scabies in any age groups. It is common in tropical climate countries poor people who live in rural areas and among displaced patients. It rises significantly among low economic status because skin diseases are significantly associated with a higher crowding index.

Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of scabies in Al- Daseem region and identify factors associated with an increased risk of scabies among patients.

 

Methodology: A retrospective cross sectional study was carried out about scabies outbreak in Al- Daseem area which located at Al-Rusafa side in Baghdad during 2019. Basic data were obtained from records of communicable disease section/public health director / Al-Rusafa health directorate. All registered cases during 2019 were included in the study, and then data computerized and analyzed using SPSS version 23 using frequency tables for the selected variables under study. Participants represented by students of Ali Al Wardi School (the only school in Al Daseem area) and from people live in this area (20% of them selected randomly). Data included socio-demographic information (age, sex, family member, and treatment). The diagnosis of scabies was based on their typical history of (itching that worsens at night, the distribution of lesions, and a history of contact with other family member infected with scabies).

 

Results: A total of 11363 participants information were obtained from database, 6473were male and 4873 were female. There were 746 (6.6% of total) participants infected with scabies of them, there were 457 (7%) male patients and 289 (5.9%) female patients. There was significant association between scabies and gender of patients, P=0.018.

According to the age groups of patients, there were 161 (6.4%) patients 6 years old, 337 (8.8%) patients within (7-12 years) age group, 82         (6.7%) patients within (13-19 years) age group, and there were 166 (4.3%) patients 20 years old. There was a significant difference between scabies and age group, p<0.001. Of the total patients, there were 622 (85%) patients had another family member infected with scabies. There was a significant association between patients and having another family member infected with it, P<0.001.

Conclusion: prevalence of scabies in Al-Daseem region was (6.6%). Scabies was dominant among male, age group of (7-12 years), and having other family member infected with scabies.

Surface Photometry and Morphology Properties of Spiral Galaxies: NGC4725, NGC4639 as Case Study

Study the effect of acid immersion on the hardness of (Epoxy – Granite) composite

This work has been done with using of epoxy resin mixed with Granite powder were weighted by percent volume (5,10,15, and 20)%and then mixed with epoxy polymer to compose polymer composite. Hand lay-up technique is used in fabrication of the composite samples. Hardness test was carried out for the proper samples in both normal condition and after immersion in HCL (1 M and 2 M) solutions for periods ranging up to 10 weeks. After comparing the results between the polymer and their composite, the hardness increased with increasing Granite weight percent, it was found that Hardness were greater for the composites before immersion compared with their values after immersion.

Histological study of Culex pipiens pipiens larvae and adults infected with Beauveria bassiana

This study aimed to show the histological changes that 0ccured in Culex pipiens pipiens larvae and adults infected with Beauveria bassiana . The 4th instar larvae and adult mosquitoes were infected with B.bassiana in 10-4 spore/ml dilution, after 96 hours histological section was studied showing that the fungi infected all the body parts specially Cuticle , Epiderms, fat bodies and midgut. After 120 hours of exposure to the fungi the insect have a white appearance and covered with a thick coat of hyphea. Thus study shows biological control of B .bassiana on mosquitoes.

The Study of Wear Effect on the Unsaturated Resin Reinforced By Rice Husk

This study was performed by using the unsaturated polyester resin as matrix to the
composite materials with the rice husk as reinforced materials . The research included study
of wear test on the composite material The results show that the, wear is increased with the
increase of applied load and distance slipping and also with time increase . moreover the
shows that the higher value wear rate( 1.91gm/cm) from the load (20) N and the higher value
wear rate (1.43gm/cm) from the higher distance (4cm) and from the higher time (6min) higher
wear rate (5.33gm/cm).

Application of 2D Electrical Resistivity Imaging Technique for Detecting Soil Cracks: Laboratory Study

Cracking of soils affects their geotechnical properties and behavior such as soil strength and stability. In this paper, 2D Electrical Resistivity Imaging Method, as a non-invasive technique, was adopted to investigate the effect of soil cracks of a centemetric scale on resistivity of sandy soil. The electrical resistivity measurements were carried out using ABEM SAS 300C Terrameter system at a laboratory scale using Wenner array. Comparison study of some mechanical properties of micro and nano silica EP composites

The effect of micro-and nano silica particles (silica SiO2 (100 μm), Fused silica (12nm)) on some mechanical properties of epoxy resin was investigated (Young's modulus, Flexural strength). The micro-and nano composites were prepared by using three steps process with different volume fraction of micro-and nano particles (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 10, 15, and 20 vol. %).
