Percutaneous Drainage of Abdominal Collections under Imaging Guide

Background: One of the most significant advances in the treatment of intra-abdominal collections during the past 2 decades has been the introduction of image-guided therapy with percutaneous catheter drainage. The development of improved imaging modalities, together with broad-spectrum antibiotics and soft drainage catheters, has changed the treatment of collections that previously required an urgent operation. Disease processes that have traditionally been treated with open surgical drainage and debridement can now be resolved with percutaneous catheter drainage and antibiotics. In selected cases, this will allow for better preparation of the patient for a later elective and definitive operation.
Objective: Highlight the outcome, safety and effectiveness of percutaneous drainage procedure of abdominal collections performed under imaging guide.
Patients and Methods: Forty one patients were referred from surgical wards and emergency department after diagnosing abdominal collections. Then each case discussed with radiologist to determine the route and type of catheter and imaging modality for guidance (ultrasound and/or computerized tomography). The size and site of the collections were estimated along with the most suitable approach and angle of catheter insertion. A safe drainage route was identified avoiding solid organs and bowel.
Results: Percutaneous drainage of 41 abdominal collections under imaging control was carried out in 41 patients during a one year period. No complications resulted from the procedure itself. Percutaneous drainage was sufficient to drain the collections in 35 cases (no further surgery is needed). Of those who require surgery (5 patients), the procedure considered to be as a temporary measure. One case was diagnosed as sero-mucinous tumor of bowel.
Conclusion: Percutaneous drainage of abdominal collections is a safe, effective and minimally invasive alternative approach to formal surgical drainage.The advantages include: the drainage can be done under local anesthesia, diagnosis and treatment can be achieved simultaneously in radiological department.

The nonlinear optical properties of Epoxy/Alumina Nanocomposites

Linear and nonlinear optical properties of epoxy/ Al2O3 nanocomposites system were studied for epoxy neat and (0.5, 1.5, 3, and 5) % Al2O3 nanocomposites.The band gap of epoxy and its nanocomposites was obtained at these weight ratios. Nonlinear optical properties experiments were performed using Q-switched Nd:YAG laser z-scan system.These experiments were carried out for different parameters: wavelengths (1064 nm and 532 nm), laser intensities (0.530, 0.679, and 0.772) GW/cm2 and weight ratio of Al2O3 nanocomposites. Study of Mouth Depth for Some Local Cyprinidae
Abstract<p>The aim of this study was to identify the depth of the mouth and its shape in some local fish belonging to the Cyprinidae family, and the extent to which the depth of the mouth is related to the way of feeding and the nature of food as well as the feeding habits of those species collected specifically from the Tigris River, the results showed a relationship of depth oral cavity with head length was highly significant at (P < 0.01) for all studied species. Also, there was a highly significant relationship between the height of the pharyngeal tooth-bearing bone and the depth of the oral cavity for fish of this local family.</p>

Construction of Atmospheric Earth Modeling Using C++ Language

     In this model, we use the C++ programming language to develop a program that calculates the atmospheric earth model from the surface to 250 kilometers. The balance forces theory is used to derive the pressure equation. The hydrostatic equation is utilized to calculate these parameters analytically. Variations of the parameters with altitude (density, pressure, temperature, and molecular weight) are investigated intensively. The equations for gravitational acceleration, sound speed, and scale height are also obtained. This model is used to investigate the effects of the earth's atmosphere on the space shuttle and the moving bodies inside it.

Image Classification Using Bag of Visual Words (BoVW)

In this paper two main stages for image classification has been presented. Training stage consists of collecting images of interest, and apply BOVW on these images (features extraction and description using SIFT, and vocabulary generation), while testing stage classifies a new unlabeled image using nearest neighbor classification method for features descriptor. Supervised bag of visual words gives good result that are present clearly in the experimental part where unlabeled images are classified although small number of images are used in the training process.

Evaluation of Pedestrians Walking Speeds in Baghdad City

This research examines the factors which influence pedestrian's walking speed in Baghdad. the variations in walking speed of pedestrians are related to pedestrian characteristics such as gender, age group, and clothing traditions. Using the established methodology, the counts of pedestrians were performed using manual and video counting. The case study was performed in two streets located in a highly crowded commercial zone at the city center of Baghdad: Al-Karada Dakhel and Al- Sina’a Street. Data were subjected to statistical analysis using IBM SPSS Statistics 19 software. It has been found that Iraqi pedestrians walk slower than other pedestrians in the developed countries or in the region with minimum walking speed of 29.85 m/min.

Sediment Transport within the Reservoir of Mandali Dam

Mandali Dam is one of the small dams in Iraq; it is located on Haran Wadi, Gangir, just 3km north-east Mandali City. Mandali dam consists of four main parts, the dam body, the intake structure, the spillway, and the bottom outlet. The dam body is zoned earth filled with a central core.  The main purposes of the dam are to maintain flow of Wadi Haran, supplying irrigation and drinking water to Mandali City, and recharging the groundwater. Measurement of extracellular fluid compartment volume using inulin:
