Background: Extreme obesity is recognized to be a risk factor for coronary heart disease. It is unclear whether overweight and normal weight also poses a risk.
Objective: The study aims to determine the effect of the body mass index on coronary arteries and left ventricular functions in patients with post myocardial infarction (MI) angina
Method: The study included 50 patients with the diagnosis of post MI angina consecutively admitted to the medical ward of Iraqi Center for Heart Disease. All patients underwent
coronary artery catheterization and Echocardiography for assessment of coronary artery and left ventricular functions
Results: The results of the study showed that there is a significant difference in impaired left ventricular systolic pressure between normal weight and overweight patients with post
MI angina .The study also revealed that (16.16%) of the patients with normal weight and (30.76%) of the patients who are over weight had three vessels disease.
Conclusion: left ventricular functions reflected by ejection fraction and left ventricular wall motion and state of coronary artery were better in normal weight patients than in over weight
patients.
Background: myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury may occur in a variety of clinical settings and this remains a significant problem. Oxygen free radicals, produced on reperfusion have been shown to play a major role in myocardial I/R injury. Various therapeutic effects have been described for Crataegus. Additionally, it has been presented that Crataegus has protective effect against ischemia reperfusion induced myocardial injuries to various organs. Therefore, it seems possible that the administration of Crataegus might protect the heart against the ischemia reperfusion injury.
Objectives: I detected the chemical components and trace elements of the aqueous extract of Crataegus leaves and determine whether Crataegus extract pr
The mass collision energy loss (dE/dX), the mass radiative energy loss (Srad/) and the total mass stopping power of electrons in the energy range of 0.01 MeV up to 1000 MeV has been calculated for Lung, Urea and Skin. The results of the present work for the mass collision stopping power of electrons in Lung, Urea and Skin are in excellent agreement with the standard results given by ESTAR program, where the maximum percentage error between the present calculated values and that of ESTAR program in Lung tissue, Urea and Skin tissue is 0.27%, 0.3% and 0.8% respectively. The mass radiative energy loss of electrons in the same energy range is also calculated using a modified equation, and the results are found to be in very good agreem
... Show MoreBackground: Obesity is imposing a growing threat to world health. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulates visceral functions via balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions. In the cardiovascular system (CVS) this non stationary balance results in the fluctuation between intervals of consecutive heart beats, so called heart rate variability (HRV). Obesity is one of the causative co-morbid conditions leading to metabolic and cardiac disorders as it is accompanied with varied combinations of abnormalities in the ANS, one view is that obese people have higher sympathetic tone. HRV measures the effect of autonomic function on the heart alone. Therefore, it could be the most useful method to investigate the

Show MoreBackground: Type 2 diabetes negatively affects the biochemical parameters of bone turnover more than obesity and is associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis and fragility fractures. Obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) are linked to increased fracturing risk; however, the effect of obesity on diabetes-related bone deficit is unknown.
Objective: The goal of this research is to compare the indications, bone density, and bone turnover in T2DM men and a control group, and to investigate the effect of body mass index on bone turnover levels.
Subjects, Material and Method: This case-control study was conducted on 120 men whose ages were from 40 - 69 years. They were groupe

Objective: The objective of this study is to compare atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) in predicting the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) on regular hemodialysis, when associated with other chronic diseases.
Patients and methods: A total of forty male patients with CRF on hemodialysis, matched in, age, body mass index BMI, and duration of hemodialysis were enrolled. They were grouped as group 1 (G1) includes eleven subjects with CRF without (hypertension and / or diabetes) groups 2 (G2) fourteen CRF subjects wi
Complications associated with diabetes are a consequence of acute disturbance in glucose metabolism in a human body. The most significant complication of diabetes is bone disorders which contributes to high levels of bone disability. This study included 118 diabetic patients, 56 males, 62 females, and 60 healthy non-diabetic controls, 30 males, 30 females. The patients and controls were age matched. Circulating levels of bone function markers (osteoprotegerin, vitamin D, PTH, total calcium and inorganic phosphorus) were determined in all subject groups. The data obtained from this study showed that the serum levels of osteoprotegerin had significantly increased in both diabetic male & female in both age ranges which were 4
... Show MoreIn spite of the high rate of morbidity and mortality heart failure (HF) is common, and none of the medications are now entirely available for HF treatment. In addition to many environmental influences and clinical diseases, genetic factors may also contribute to the progression and development of HF. In the current study, samples of blood were collected from 150 heart failure patients and 130 healthy controls. We evaluated the association of four single nucleotide polymorphisms (snps) of Toll-like receptors (TLR6 and TLR5) with (HF) susceptibility in the Iraqi population. In this work, (SNP) called Toll-like receptor 5 (rs5744168, rs2072493) and Toll-like receptor 6 (rs1039559, rs5743810) were employed. (PCR-RFLP) for snps

Additionally, the influence of bite force on the vertical stability of any treatment result is important. The new position of the dentition should be compatible with the dynamics of the muscular and occlusal forces in all planes. This study was conducted to 1) to measure and compare maximum bite force, body height and weight among normal occlusion and malocclusion groups (cl I,cl II,cl III) in both gender 2) to evaluate the correlation between bite force and craniofacial morphology, body height and weight. Materials and Methods: The sample consists of 100 Iraqi adult subjects aged 18-25 years. It was classified in to four gr

Show MoreIn this paper, the survival function has been estimated for the patients with lung cancer using different parametric estimation methods depending on sample for completing real data which explain the period of survival for patients who were ill with the lung cancer based on the diagnosis of disease or the entire of patients in a hospital for a time of two years (starting with 2012 to the end of 2013). Comparisons between the mentioned estimation methods has been performed using statistical indicator mean squares error, concluding that the estimation of the survival function for the lung cancer by using pre-test singles stage shrinkage estimator method was the best . <

In addition to traditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease, nowadays, accumulating evidence indicates that a variety of infectious agents may contribute to pathogenesis of ischemic heart disease.
Patients and methods: 125 patients (25 females and 100 males) attending the department of cardiology, Baghdad, teaching hospital over the period December 2008- June 2009were enrolled. Their age range between (39-75 years) compared with 50 healthy individuation (Age & sex matched). The sera were tested for H. pylori antibodies using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
