Assessment of Nutritional Status of Pregnant Adolescents in Baghdad City

Objectives: The study aims to assess the nutritional status, identify nutrition-related health problems and
find out the relationships between nutritional status and demographic characteristics of the pregnant
adolescents in Baghdad City.
Methodology: A descriptive study was carried out from April/20/2009 to June/30/2009 through a "Nonprobability"
purposive sample of (196) pregnant adolescents their age between (13–19) years who attend (14)
primary health care centers in Baghdad City seeking for antenatal care. The data were collected by the
investigator who interviewed the pregnant adolescents and filled out the constructed questionnaire formats
which designed for the purpose of the study. Internal consistency of reliability determined through the
computation of alpha-Chronbach correlation coefficient for quality of life items. Test-retest of reliability was
determined through the computation of Spearman's correlation coefficient for the same items. The content
validity of the constructed questionnaire was determined through a panel of experts. Data were analyzed
through the application of descriptive statistical approach (frequencies and percentages) and inferential
statistical approach (Chi-Square).
Results: The findings revealed that imparity in weight per (kg) according to the pregnancy trimester recorded
the following mean values (after excluding the extreme values). 1st trimester (0.00 – 0.66kg), 2nd trimester
(2.83 – 3.51kg) and 3rd trimester (4.90 – 6.96kg). Regarding nutritional related problems; anemia,
hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, protein urea (trace), teeth decay and urinary tract infection, nausea, vomiting,
and heartburn. Common dietary patterns: skipping meals, snacks eating, food dislike, and not drinking enough
amounts of water or beverages daily(6–8) glasses, The dietary intake through the (24) hours diet recall and
food frequency questionnaire which in comparison with food pyramid do not meet daily requirements of their
servings.
Recommendations: The study recommends health promotion and nutrition-oriented education programs
can be designed, structured and presented to female adolescents to prepare them for a healthy marriage and
pregnancy.

Association of Cestoda Raillietina echinobothrida in Rock Pigeon Columba livia from Baghdad city of Iraq

The parasite tapeworm (Raillietina echinobothrida) belonges to the class Cestoda, it is responsible for nodular tapeworm disease in poultry .The aim of this study was to determine tapeworm parasites infections in Columba livia from two markets in the province of Baghdad for the period from May to December 2014. From a total of thirty five sample of Columba livia were randomly selected and then examined the elementary canal of these samples. Qualitative and Quantitative study of Epipelic algae in Tigris River within Baghdad City, Iraq

The present study conducted to study epipelic algae in the Tigris River within Baghdad city for one year from September 2011 to August 2012 due to the importance role of benthic algae in lotic ecosystems. Five sites have been chosen along the river. A total of 154 species of epipelic algae was recorded belongs to 45 genera, where Bacillariophyceae (Diatoms) was the dominant groups followed by Cyanophyceae and Chlorophyceae. Epidemiological Surveillance of Communicable Diseases in Baghdad City during the Period January-April 2006

The records of Primary Health Care Centres (Al-Risafa section of Baghdad) were inspected for communicable diseases during the period January-April 2006. There were 8622 recorded cases (the diagnosis was based on a clinical examination and laboratory findings), which were distributed as 4782 (55.5%), 1430 (16.6%), 1604 (18.6%) and 806 (9.3%) for Sadar city, Risafa, A'adhamyiah and Mada'in, respectively. The highest frequency was reported for chicken pox (42.7%), followed by mumps and typhoid fever (20 and 13.7%, respectively), while diphtheria and cholera were not recorded. Study a bout the Epidemiology of Vulvo Vaginal Candidiasis (Candida spp.) in Baghdad City

This Study was conducted to investigate vaginitis in women who live in Baghdad City. Results Revealed that Candida spp. were the causal agent of 38.5% of symptomatic cases the yeasts Candidaalbicans, C.glabrata, C.tropicalis, C.parapsilosis and C.krusei were isolated with the percentage of 38.1, 9.1, 3.9, 2.6, 1.3 respectively also there were 18% of women in control group carrying Candida spp. The direct smear method were not efficient because the percentage of infection was 17.5% comparing with the culture method the sensitivity of direct smear method was 45.5% The percentage of WBC to Epithelial cells was less than one in 76.6% of women.
