Inhibitory Effect of Grapefruit Extracts on the Growth and Adhesion Ability of Staphylococcus aureus

Ten isolates belong to the Staphylococcus bacteria from different clinical swabs were taken from patients in Ibn al-Nafis Hospital and Central Public Health laboratory, according to many morphological and biochemical tests that used to identify bacterial species S. aureus, the results showed that 8 isolates when investigated their ability to produce a slime layer using Congo red agar method the results showed that SA5 isolate was the best compared to other isolates through change the color of colonies to the pink and Congo red agar -colored Black.
When examining the inhibitory effect of grapefruit extracts in the growth of isolated bacteria SA5 S.aureus, results showed that the aqueous extract of the seeds at different concentrations did not show any inhibitory effect on the bacterial growth while the juice extract of this plant had an effective antibacterial activity against SA5of S.aureus in different concentrations(50%,75%,100%) were the zones of inhibition reached (8 mm ,10mm,12mm) respectively, while plant seeds extract had more effective antibacterial activity against SA5 S.aureus in different concentrations(25%,50%,75%,100%) were the zones of inhibition reached (7 mm ,9mm,12mm,15mm) respectively; Also this study tested the adhesion ability of SA5 bacterial isolate on the stainless steel material where the results showed that a large number of bacterial cells up to 58 × 105cells / ml adhered to the surface of stainless steel piece as the control, while the number of bacterial cells that adherent to the surface of this material decreased to24 × 104cells/ ml when treated with GSE.

An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the effect of AL-coholic extract alkaloid of Cordia myxa leafs in fourth larval stage of lesser grain borer Rhyzopertha dominica. Using alkaline extracts of 8%, the study has been shown clear effect increased in mortality rate for fourth larval stage 93.3% and degressed to 66.6% at 4% concentrate to 13.3% with control treatment .Ahigher percentage of pupal mortality 16.6% at 4% concentrate has been observed, while no natural emergence carried out at concentrates of 4.6% comparing with control treatment of 86.66%, at the same time percentage of deformation has been increased to 16.66% at 4% of extracts and degressed to 6.66% at 6% while no deformation have been shown with control treatment .

Antimicrobial activity of grape fruit seed crude extract on microbial growth

Antimicrobial and antiyeast activity of ethanolic and aqueous extract of grape fruit seed (Citrus paradise ; Rutaceaa) was examined against 10 bacterial and 2 yeast strains. The level of the antimicrobial effects was established using an in vitro agar assay and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). In general ethanolic extract were more effective on gram positive bacteria than gram negative bacteria and strongest antimicrobial effect against Streptococcus pyogenes and Salmonella entritidis. Other tested bacteria and yeasts were sensitive to extract ranging from 4 to 16 mg/ml and more.

Comparison Between Conventional and Microwave Methods For Extraction Pectin and Degree of Esterification from Orange (Citrus sinesis) and Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) Peels

In this study Microwave and conventional methods have been used to extract and estimate pectin and its degree of esterification from dried grapefruit and orange peels. Acidified solution water with nitric acid in pH (1.5) was used. In conventional method, different temperature degrees for extraction pectin from grape fruit and orange(85 ,90 , 95 and 100?C) for 1 h were used The results showed grapefruit peels contained 12.82, 17.05, 18.47, 15.89% respectively, while the corresponding values were 5.96, 6.74, 7.41 and 8.00 %, respectively in orange peels.
