Assessment of Heavy Metal Contamination in Euphrates River Sediments from Al-Hindiya Barrage to Al-Nasiria City, South Iraq

The degree of contamination in the sediments of the Euphrates River (Shatt Al-
Hindiya), for the metals As, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sc Se, Sr, V and Zn has
been evaluated using the index of geo-accumulation (I-geo), Enrichment factor (EF),
Contamination factor (CF) and pollution load index (PLI), whereat the I-geo has
been widely utilized as a measure of pollution in freshwater sediment. Enrichment
factor (EF) is one widely used as approach to characterize the degree of
anthropogenic pollution to establish enrichment ratios, while the pollution load
index (PLI) represents the number of times by which the heavy metal concentrations
in the sediment exceeds the background concentration, and gives a summative
indication of the overall level of heavy metal toxicity in a particular sample. By
using these numerical sediments indexes we found that the Sediments of Euphrates
River in the study area are polluted by the metals of Nickel (maximum 194ppm) and
Strontium (maximum 543ppm), and moderately polluted by the metals of Copper
(maximum 47.9), Cobalt (maximum 22.8ppm), Chromium (maximum 111ppm) and
Selenium (maximum 1.1ppm), while the sediments of Euphrates River are not
polluted by the metals of Arsenic (maximum 10.2ppm), Cadmium (maximum
0.29ppm), Manganese (maximum 949ppm), Lead (maximum 14.8ppm), Scandium
(maximum 8.96ppm), Vanadium (maximum 81ppm) and Zinc (maximum 91ppm).

Correlation between BOD5 and COD for Al-Diwaniyah wastewater treatment plants to obtain biodegradability indices.

The present study aims to establish an empirical correlation between biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the sewage flowing in Al-Diwaniyah wastewater treatment plant. The strength of the wastewater entering the plant varied from medium to high. High concentrations of BOD5 and COD in the effluent were obtained due to the poor performance of the plant. This was observed from the BOD5 /COD ratios that did not confirm with the typical ratios for the treated sewage. Regression equations for BOD5 and COD removal percentages were suggested which can be used to evaluate rapid effluent assessment after the treatment processes or optimal process control to improve the performance of wastewater treatment plants.

3D Geological Modeling for Yamama Reservoir in Subba, Luhias and Ratawi Oil Fields, South of Iraq

3D geological model for each reservoir unit comprising the Yamama Formation revealed to that the formation is composed of alternating reservoirs and barriers. In Subba and Luhais fields the formation began with barrier YB-1 and four more barriers (YB-2, YB-3, YB-4, YB-5), separated five reservoirs (YR-A, YR-B, YR-C, YR-D, YR-E) ranging in thickness from 70 to 80 m for each of them deposited by five sedimentary cycles. In the Ratawi field the formation was divided into three reservoir units (YR-A, YR-B, and YR-C) separated by two barrier units (YB-2 and YB-3), the first cycle is missing in Ratawi field.

Sources of Heavy Minerals of the Neogene Clastics at Bekhme, Northern Iraq

Ten samples were collected from Injana and Mukdadiya Formations, representing 5 samples of fine grain sandstone (F) and 5 samples of very fine grain sandstone (VF). The heavy metals study showed that the opaque mineral recorded the highest percentage in comparison with other heavy metals.
