Paleoenvironmental Conditions of the Harur Formation (Early Carboniferous), Northern Iraq: Insights from Mineralogy and Elemental Geochemistry

    The early Carboniferous Harur Formation from the Ora outcrop section of northern Iraq consists of black shale, calcareous shale and carbonate. The mineralogical and geochemical investigations (major and trace elements) of the black shale and calcareous shale units have been conducted to evaluate paleoenvironmental conditions including paleoclimate, paleoredox conditions, paleoproductivity, sedimentary rate, and to evaluate their effects on organic matter accumulation. The geochemical proxies such as the Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA), A-CN-K plot, Sr/Cu ratio, and the relation between the ratio of Ga/Rb and Sr/Cu suggest moderate to intense chemical weathering under humid conditions. The Rb/K and Sr/Ba ratios indicate a freshwater environment during deposition. Multiple paleo-redox indicators such as ratios of V/(V+Ni) and Th/U) and U index indicates deposition under depleted marine oxygen conditions and consequently recording an Ocean Anoxic Event (OAE). The Th/U ratio indicates that the sedimentary rate at the lower part of the section is less than that of the upper part of the section. The terrigenous clastic input index (Ti and Al) shows that clastic input reduced from the lower to the upper section which implies that the sea level rose first lower to the upper section. Both Al and Ti have positive correlations with TOC (Total Organic Carbon) which reveal that clastic input was advantageous for OM accumulation. The high ratios of (Fe + Mn)/Ti and the presence of nacrite minerals indicate hydrothermal activity during deposition. Hence, the main control factors of OM accumulation in the black shale and calcareous shale of the Harur Formation were terrigenous clastic fluxes, in addition to paleo-redox conditions and hydrothermal activities. On contrary, paleoproductivity proxies play a relatively less significant role in OM accumulation.

Biostratigraphy of Yamama Formation in Faihaa Oil Field, Southern Iraq

The Yamama Formation was studied in three wells (Fh-1, Fh-2, and Fh-3) within Faihaa oil field, south Iraq. Thin sections were studied by using the polarizing microscope examination in order to determine microfossils and biozone. Thirty-five species of benthic foraminifera were recognized, including four index species. In addition,  twelve species of calcareous green algae were recognized, including  two index species. Other fossils that were recognized in Yamama Formation include Gastropoda, Bryozoa, Coral, Rudist, and Pelecypoda.

Mineralogy of Sand Fraction in Selective Soil Sections in Baghdad City
Abstract<p>This study has been undertaken to investigate the mineralogical properties and morphological features of sand fraction in some soils of Baghdad / Iraq.The morphological features of sand fractions were studied by Polarized optical microscope. Petrology of the Lower Succession of Injana Formation, Shorr Shareen area, Wasit Governorate, - Eastern Iraq

     This study deals with the petrology of the lower succession of the Injana Formation in the Shorr Shareen area, Wasit Governorate, Eastern Iraq. The study revealed that the sandstone is litharenite consists of 45.56% rock fragments, 22.13% quartz and 8.5% feldspars. The matrix is about 8.39%, consisting of silt and clay particles. The cement is variable (carbonates 8.42%, evaporites 1.78% and iron oxides 0.96%). The grain assemblage infers that the source of the rock fragments is nearby. Efficiency of Thematic Mapper Data for Detecting the Changes of Land Use -Land Cover in Mosul Lake and Surrounding Area Northern Iraq

The study area lies in the northern part of Iraq, This study depends on one scene of Thematic Mapper (TM5) data of Landsat, these data are subset by using region of interest (ROI) file within the ERDAS 9.2 software. RS and GIS have been used as tools for detecting the desertification during the periods 1990-2000-2009 by using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index NDVI, Water Index WI and Barren Land Index BLI. The indicators of Desertification which used in this study for period  1990-2000 and 2000-2009 are represented by decrease the vegetation cover and increase water body and barren land.
