Hydrochemical and Environmental Isotope of Groundwater Samples in Al- Khassa Sub-Basin, Kirkuk, Northeastern Iraq

Hydrochemical study of groundwater has carried out for the Al-Khassa Sub-Basin during the October 2020 and May 2021 seasons for estimating the impacts of seasonal variation and human activity on water quality and using the isotope to determine the main source of recharge. It was found that Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), and Dissolved Oxygen (DO) were out of the standard indicating that the groundwater environment was reduced and difficult to recover from pollution. Physical and chemical properties that were high (Total Dissolved Solid (TDS), Total Suspended Solid (TSS), Electrical conductivity (EC), Total Hydrocarbon (THC)). Partial pollution by nitrate and phosphorous due to the use of fertilizers for these elements. The contamination by manganese, molybdenum and boron was present in all samples of the two seasons, and partly for lead and mercury due to fertilizers, agricultural activities, the presence of animal and poultry ranches, besides the poor sewage system in the basin based on a septic tank. Washing polluted agricultural soil by rain lead to polluting groundwater. From the environmental isotope analysis (δ2H and δ18O), the isotopic compositions of precipitation were used to construct a local meteoric water line for the study area. The isotopic compositions of groundwater samples were situated to the left of the Global meteoric water line (GMWL), suggesting input of local rainfall that derives from weather front originating from the Mediterranean Sea. Comparing the isotope composition of groundwater and precipitation showed that the infiltrated precipitation that was the main source of recharge to the aquifer system in the study area.

Geoelectrical Study in Shewasoor Dam Site in Kirkuk/Northern Iraq

A geoelectrical investigation is carried out for a geological consideration in the Shewasoor dam site, which is situated 40 km northeast Kirkuk city. Symmetrical Schlumberger array were applied for fifteen electrical sounding (VES) points, with a maximum spread distance (120-200) meters. Seven vertical electric sounding (VES) points were surveyed in the main valley. Two (VES) points were taken at the area behind the dam, and two other points at the right side of the dam body. Additional four (VES) points measured at the left side within the spillway area. In order to achieve the qualitative and quantitative interpretations manual partial matching technique and (IPI2 WIN) (ID) software are used. The results show that the surface is compri

Microfacies Analysis and Basin Development of Hartha Formation in East Baghdad Oil field, Central Iraq

The Hartha Formation is one of the important formations deposited during Late Campanian age.

The present study deals with four boreholes (EB-53, 54, 55 and 56) within the East Baghdad oil field to diagnoses the microfacies and interpret the depositional environments.

Six major microfacies were recognized in the succession of the Hartha Formation. Their characteristic grain types and depositional texture enabled the recognition of paleoenvironment. There are Orbitoides wackestone-packstone , Orbitoides - miliolid wackestone, Peloidal and Pellets - echinoderm wackestone to packstone, Peloidal wackestone to packstone, Pelletal wackestone to packstone, and Planktonic foraminifera wackestone-packstone.

Hydrochemical Evaluation of the Tigris River from Kut to Amara sites, Iraq

The Tigris River is one of the longest rivers in Western Asia and runs through heavily populated areas, especially in Kut and Amara Cities, with nearly 8 million inhabitants. Due to the climatic change and altering the upstream hydrological conditions along the Tigris River, its discharge has severely declined in the last decade, combined with the climate change impact. Hence, studying the impact of climate change on the river and decreasing the annual flow is vital to understand their effect on the river water quality between Kut and Amara sites. The data of this study covers annual flow conditions of the Tigris River, the total dissolved solids (TDS), and the main ions on monthly bases for the period 2005-2010 for the two si

Minimum Instream Environmental Flow in Shatt Al-Hillah River

To maintain river flows necessary to meet social and ecological objectives, instream environmental flows are frequently used as a strategy. The capability of three alternative historical flow approaches to protect against low flows is shown in this study using gage stations in the Shatt Al-Hillah River in Iraq. The extension of the Shatt al-Hillah River is the focus of this research discussion on environmental flow assessment. The available data on discharge in this research were adopted for ten years from 2012-2021. Different flow methods were adopted to establish a minimum environmental flow in the Shatt Al-Hillah River. Three hydrological-based approaches: Tennant, modified Tennant, and low-flow metrics like 7Q10, wer

Study of Environmental and Biological characteristics of AL-Chibaish marshes and their effect to the biodiversity of southern Iraq

The Mesopotamian marshlands faced a massive destruction from many years and this lead to effect to ecosystem. In this study a survey was made on the physical chemical and heavy metals characteristics and microbiological analysis of AL Chibaish marsh during the two months. Water analyses revealed unacceptable values for almost all physiochemical and biological properties, according to WHO standard limits for drinking water. Almost all major ions and heavy metal concentrations in water showed a distinct decreasing trend at the marsh outlet station compared to other stations. In general, major and minor ions, as well as heavy metals exhibit higher concentrations in location 1 than in location 3. The concentrations of heavy metals in water show

Isolation and characterization of lytic vibriophage against Vibrio cholerae O1 from environmental water samples in Kelantan, Malaysia

Water samples from a variety of sources in Kelantan, Malaysia (lakes, ponds, rivers, ditches, fish farms, and sewage) were screened for the presence of bacteriophages infecting Vibrio cholerae. Ten strains of V. cholerae that appeared to be free of inducible prophages were used as the host strains. Eleven bacteriophage isolates were obtained by plaque assay, three of which were lytic and further characterized. The morphologies of the three lytic phages were similar with each having an icosahedral head (ca. 50–60 nm in diameter), a neck, and a sheathed tail (ca. 90–100 nm in length) characteristic of the family Myoviridae.
