Environmental Assessment of heavy metals Concentration and Distribution in Surface Soils of Wasit Governorate/ Iraq
...Show More Authors

Wasit Governorate is characterized by industrials activities such as groups of asphalts and bricks factories, oil fields and thermal power plant, in addition to the agricultural activity that is widely separated, which leads to pollution of the surface soils with heavy metals. The main objective in this research is to assess heavy metals pollution and understand the distribution in the surface soils in the studied area.  Twenty two surface soils samples were collected from 6 districts and 4 subdistricts within Wasit Governorate during April 2017. The results obtained showed that grain size analyzes are classified as sandy mud (sand 9.5%, silt 50.8 % and clays 39.8%). In the term of geochemical parameters, high level of soil salinity in Wasit Governorate was in Badrah station (8%). Organic matter records 3.7% as a relative maximum concentration in industrial soils at 7.2 pH. Heavy metals Mo, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, Mn, As, Cd,V, Cr, Br, Ta, Zr, Ba  and Sr were investigated in the  soils samples in Wasit Governorate.  Assessment of heavy metal pollution has calculated by using the index of geo-accumulation (I-geo), Contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI) and I-geo has been commonly applied as a degree of pollution in soils samples. The pollution load index (PLI) characterizes the number of times in which the heavy metal concentrations of sediment exceeds the background concentration; it provides a cumulative indication of the overall level of heavy metal toxicity in a certain sample. By using these statistical indexes of soils, the results show that soils  samples in the studied  area are very polluted by the heavy  metals of Titanium (72.7 ppm), Nickel (188.9) to considerable with   Molybdenum (9.85 ppm), Chromium (226 ppm), Cadmium (2.2ppm), bromine (27.ppm) and Strontium (431.6 ppm),  and with moderate pollution  of the heavy  metals of Copper (54.7) Cobalt (13.4 ppm), Manganese (781.8ppm), Vanadium (104.3ppm) and zinc (117.6ppm

Effect of sedimentary source on the properties of sphericity and roundness of feldspar minerals in some soils of the alluvial plain
...Show More Authors

This study was conducted on the effect of the sedimentary source (the sediments coming from both the Iraqi-Iranian borderline and the Tigris river) on the optical and textural features, especially sphericity and roundness of feldspar minerals (potassium and plagioclase types) in soils of the southern part of the alluvial plain. Eight pedons were selected to represent the study area, five of them represented sediments coming from the borderline, which included pedons of (Badra, Taj Al-Din, Al-Shihabi, Jassan, and Galati), while two of them represent the sediments of the Tigris River (Essaouira, Al-Dabouni), the pedon of Ali Al-Gharbi was represented the mixing area of sediments of all the floods coming from the borderline and the sediments o

An Assessment of Glutathione-S-Transferase and Lipid Profile in Obese Iraqi Patients
...Show More Authors

Obesity is a chronic disease that may have genetic, environmental, and other causes. Obesity is a shortcut to many diseases, such as hypertension, diabetes, atherosclerosis, and other chronic diseases. Oxidative stress increases obesity through free radicals. Glutathione S-transferase (GST) is a metabolic enzyme used to remove toxins. This study aimed to determine GST activity in obese patients as a predictor of oxidative stress and the effectiveness of lipid profiling in obese patients. The study included 139 samples of obese and healthy people (obese group 84 and healthy group 55). Both groups (obese and healthy groups) were divided into four groups based on body mass index. Blood samples were collected from obese males and females in

Spectrophotometric Determination of Epinephrine in Pharmaceutical Preparations Using Praseodymium as Mediating Metals
...Show More Authors

A simple, accurate and sensitive spectrophotometric method for the determinaion of epinephrine is described . The method is based on the coordination of Pr (III) with epinephrine at pH 6. Absorbance of the resulting orange yellow complex is measured at 482 nm . A graph of absorbance versus concentrations shows that beer 's low is obeyed over the concentration range (1-50)mg.ml-1 of epinephrine with molar absorpitivity of ( 2.180x103 L.mol-1.cm-1 ), a sandell sensitivity of (0.084 mg.cm-2 ), a relative error of (-2.83%) , a corrolation coffecient (r= 0.9989) and recovery % ( 97.03 ± 0.75 ) depending on the concentration. This method is applied to analyse EP in several commercially available pharmaceutical preparations

Determination of environmental lead pollution in Alawi el-hilla and Bab-almudam bus stations in Baghdad city
...Show More Authors

Two main grand bus national stations in Baghdad ( Alawi-alhila and Bab-almudam) were chosen as examples to determine lead effect on its drivers. This lead came from ethyl tetra lead or ethyl tri lead which used to improve gasoline quality ,so these two stations could be consider as two of the most polluted places due to gasoline burned by hundreds cars located in these stations .The determination of environmental lead pollution was measured in blood and urines drivers. Drivers were divided in two main groups due to their ages ( 30 persons in each group). The first group for men of 22-30 years old. The second group for men of 40-60 years old. Those men were carefully chosen in order to be non-fumiers or non-alcoholics persons because of

High performance liquid chromatographic method for the determination of guaifenesin in pharmaceutical syrups and in environmental samples
...Show More Authors

A simple, precise, rapid, and accurate reversed – phase high performance liquid chromatographic method has been developed for the determination of guaifenesin in pure from pharmaceutical formulations.andindustrial effluent. Chromatography was carried out on supelco L7 reversed- phase column (25cm × 4.6mm), 5 microns, using a mixture of methanol –acetonitrile-water: (80: 10 :10 v/v/v) as a mobile phase at a flow rate of 1.0 ml.min-1. Detection was performed at 254nm at ambient temperature. The retention time for guaifenesin was found 2.4 minutes. The calibration curve was linear (r= 0.9998) over a concentration range from 0.08 to 0.8mg/ml. Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification ( LOQ) were found 6µg/ml and 18µg/ml res

Distribution and Classification of Medicinal Plants in Zakhikhah Area of Al-Anbar Desert
...Show More Authors

This study included the Zakhikhah area in the Al- Anbar desert, which it bounded on the north, east, and west by the Euphrates River and on the south by the Ramadi-Qaim road. Several exploratory field trips were taken to the study area. During this time, a semi-detailed area survey was carried out based on satellite imagery captured by American Land sat-7, topographic maps, and natural vegetation variance. All necessary field tools, including a digital camera and GPS device, were brought to determine the soil type and collect plant samples. All of these visits are planned to cover the entire state of Zakhikhah. All vegetation cover observations, identifying sampling sites and attempting to inventory and collect medicinal plants in t

Green Synthesis Concept of Nanoparticles From Environmental Bacteria and Their Effects on Pathogenic Bacteria
...Show More Authors

Soil bacteria play an interesting role in the reduction of Ag+ ions and the formation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), which may be a good source for nanoparticles and play a major role in nanotechnology applications. The concept of this project was to study the effects of these environmentally produced nanoparticles on the growth of some pathogenic bacteria. The environmental bacteria were isolated from soil, purified on broth cultures, and centrifuged, while the supernatant was extracted to detect its ability to convert silver nitrate to nanoparticles. The AgNPs was detected by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), while Granularity Cumulating Distribution (GCD) was employed to estimate the AgNPs sizes. The results showed the
