Evaluation of Heavy Metal Accumulation in Sawa Lake Sediments, Southern Iraq using Magnetic Study

Heavy metal contamination comprises a great concern in the environment. A magnetic study combined with heavy metal analyses was performed in the Sawa Lake in Al-Muthanna governorate (southern Iraq). Concentrations of selected heavy metals (Cr, Fe, Ni, As and Pb) have been measured and magnetic susceptibility (χ) of sediment samples collected from the lake bottom was calculated.

The results confirmed that a cement plant, which is located less than two kilometers away from the lake has no contamination levels on the lake’s sediments. No enhancement in the magnetic susceptibility was observed. X-ray florescence (XRF) was performed for heavy metal analyses.

Spatial variations of χ with the mean value of 4.58 x 10−8 m3kg−1 and results of other magnetic parameters suggest the magnetic carriers are a predominantly hard magnetic phase like hematite and the existence of small super-paramagnetic proportions. XRF analyses show average concentrations of (Cr, Fe, Ni) and very low for (As, Pb) which is typical for relatively clean areas. Magnetic susceptibility was insignificantly correlated with heavy metals due to low concentrations of both magnetic signals and heavy metal contents. This study has shed some light on the importance of applying the χ measurements techniques to monitor and assess lakes sediment pollution.

The effect of Al-Wand lake on the shallow groundwater aquifer in Khanaqin area, Diyala Governorate, Iraq

     The relationship between Al-Wand lake and groundwater was studied in Khanaqin cityby identifying water levels for Al-Wand lake and the shallow groundwater aquifer for 2019 and 2020. The hydrochemical analyses of Al-Wand river water, Al-Wand lake water and shallow groundwater, and identifying the grain size analysis and mineralogy of the surface sediments have been done. This relationship was adopted on climate data of the study area by knowing which seasons contained water surplus or water deficit, and  porosity and permeability define of soil that affects groundwater movement, and identify the salinity that effect on water quality.

Evaluation of Petrophysical Characteristics of Mishrif and Yamama Reservoirs, in Garraf Oil Field, Southern Iraq, Based on Well-Logging Interpretation

     The Mishrif and Yamama Formation are the main reservoirs in the Garraf oilfield, Nasiriyah city, of the Euphrates Subzone, Mesopotamian Basin, Southern Iraq. The Garraf oilfield structural pattern corresponds with the similar anticline forming the oilfields of Rafidain and Dujaila and is parallel to the main trend of Zagros, indicating simple coaxial deformation.

The petrophysical properties are evaluated using the Interactive Petrophysics V3.5 software. Environmental Study of Groundwater Quality of Selected Wells in Al-Zubair, Southern Iraq and their Uses

     Twenty-five groundwater samples from the Al-Zubair area, southern Iraq, were analyzed for physical and chemical variables. The study showed that the groundwater is of acidic type and in it tends towards light alkalinity. The Relation between Bacterial and Heavy Metal Water Pollution and Blood Micronuclei as Biomarkers in the Tigris River Fish

Fish and water samples are carried out in 1 May to 1 June 2013 from Tigris River. A total of fifty three fish sample are studied. Study the Effect of Using Microwave Radiation and H-Donors on Improving Heavy Oil

The present research has investigated the effect of microwave energy on improving the flow properties of heavy crude oil. The fragmentation of crude oil molecules was carried out with and without using 1 and 10 wt. % concentration of various types of H-donors like tetralin, cyclohexane, and naphtha.  Microwave power of 320, 385, and 540 W and radiation time 1-9 min, and temperature were studied.
