Detection of Cadmium and Chromium in some Facial Cosmetics

This study was done to compare among 120 new and used cosmetic brands to determine the heavy metals concentrations (Cadmium, Chromium) in (face foundation, powder and blushers). Sixty new cosmetic products were bought from local markets in Baghdad city (twenty different brands foe each cosmetic products), while sixty used cosmetic products were collected from Iraqi women and they had been stored for a long time. This study proved that not all analyzed cosmetic products containing heavy metals concentrations and all concentrations are under Iraqi acceptable limits except one new blusher product which contained chromium with (28 ppm), but all used cosmetic products have shown better results in concentrations of heavy metals than new products and we found that foundations are the best from all analyzed products, although these have emulsion texture which is difficult to store and easily to contaminate; even though most of these cosmetic products have label of ingredients and brand, or free from production and expiration date, that will not prevent any presence of heavy metals within their chemical structure. Women must avoid using the same brand and store the products for a long period to prevent expose to the same chemical ingredients of these products because of being vulnerable to biodegradation and refraining to buy products without a certain brand or country origin.

Electrosorption of Hexavalent Chromium Ions by MnO2/Carbon Fiber Composite Electrode: Analysis and Optimization of the Process by Box-Behnken Design

A nano manganese dioxide (MnO2) was electrodeposited galvanostatically onto a carbon fiber (CF) surface using the simple method of anodic electrodeposition. The composite electrode was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Very few studies investigated the efficiency of this electrode for heavy metals removal, especially chromium. The electrosorption properties of the nano MnO2/CF electrode were examined by removing Cr(VI) ions from aqueous solutions. NaCl concentration, pH, and cell voltage were studied and optimized using the Box-Behnken design (BDD) to investigate their effects and interactions on the electrosorption process. The results showed that the

Detection of HBME-1 and galectin-3 by immunohistochemistry in follicular lesions

The main problem established by a discovery of a thyroid nodule is to discriminate between a benign and malignant lesion. Differential diagnosis between follicular thyroid cancer (FTC) and benign follicular thyroid adenoma (FTA) is a great challenge for even an experienced pathologist and requires special effort. A developing number of some encouraging IHC markers for the differential diagnosis of thyroid lesions have emerged, including, Hector Battifora mesothelial (HBME-1) and galectin-3 (Gal-3). There was significant positive correlation between Galectin-3 and HBME-1 in follicular carcinoma and follicular variant of papillary carcinoma (r= 0.380, P= 0.041) and (r= 0.315, P=0.047) respectively. There was no significant correlation between

Detection and isolation of flavonoids from Calendula officinalis (F.Asteraceae) cultivated in Iraq

Calendula officinalis L. (Asteraceae) known as marigold is known to have several pharmacological activities and used for the treatment of several diseases as measles, jaundice, constipation and several inflammations. Marigold flowers contain several chemical constituents mainly flavonoids, triterpenoids and essential oil. In this study marigold flowers cultivated in Iraq had been investigated for its flavonoids content. The study revealed the presence of quercetin and kaempferol glycosides and the absence of myricetin glycosides. The flowers were extracted with ethanol 70% fractionated with different solvent and the flavonoids were isolated by preparative HPLC. The isolated flavonoids were identified by measuring melting points, UV, IR,

Serological and Molecular Phylogenetic Detection of Coxiella burnetii in Lactating Cows, Iraq

This study is carried out to investigate the prevalence of Coxiella burnetii (C. burnetii) infections in cattle using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay targeting IS1111A transposase gene. A total of 130 lactating cows were randomly selected from different areas in Wasit province, Iraq and subjected to blood and milk sampling during the period extended between November 2018 and May 2019. ELISA and PCR tests revealed that 16.15% and 10% of the animals studied were respectively positive. Significant correlations (P<0.05) were detected between the positive results and clinical data. Two positive PCR products were analyzed phylogenetically, named as C. burnetii IQ-No.5 and C. burnet

Detection of Albumin and Urea in Kidney Failure Patients by Optical Biosensor

The major function of the kidney is the filtration and secretion of the final products of metabolism and the excess of electrolytes. The term kidney failure denotes inability of the kidneys to perform excretory function leading to retention of nitrogenous waste products from the blood. Biosensor are most accurate, with a rapid diagnosis ,more costly method than the traditional method to avoid any biological changes in blood sample that lead to changes optical characteristic (refractive index and absorption) of blood sample. The current study was designed to single mode  more Sensitivity than multi mode for Biomarkers  were recorded for Albumin 5447.06, 5193.93 and Urea sample 2623.14, 1998.44  in sm and mm respectively .

Detection and Recognition of Car Plates in Parking Lots at Baghdad University

A simple and smart algorithm was presented to recognize car plates in parking at the College of Science for Women, University of Baghdad, Iraq. The study consists of recording video clips of all cars parked in the selected area. The studied camera heights were1m and 2m, and the video clips were 19 and 30. Images were extracted from the video clip to be used for training data for the cascade method. Haar classification was used to detect license plates after the training step. Viola-jones algorithm was applied to the output of Haar’s data for both camera heights (1m and 2m). The accuracy was calculated for all data with different weather conditions and local time recoding. The accuracy is 100% for all data in this study.
