The Sedimentology and Facies Analysis of the Cretaceous Oceanic Red Beds (CORBs) in the Shiranish Formation, Northern of Iraq
...Show More Authors

Upper Cretaceous Oceanic Red Beds (CORBs) are pelagic sediment
deposits that deposited in the Upper Cretaceous basin, with widespread in
part of the world as well as in Iraq. This research investigates the deposition
of cyclic marl and marly limestone CORBs of six selected sections at the
active southern margin of the Tethys during the Late Campanian -
Maastrichtian with petrography, microfacies, and depositional environment.
As this study was not a consideration in the past, so decided to visit and
identify all exposure areas of the Upper Cretaceous period rocks are visited.
This study involved two fields touring reconnaissance extended from
Darbandikhan city in the east south to Shiranish Village in the west north.
Six lithological sections covering the studied area, four sections represent
Cretaceous Oceanic Red Beds (CORBs) and two sections without (CORBs)
for the purpose of comparison between them. The sections are described in
detail and 250 samples were collected from all studied sections.
For the petrography and microfacies analysis 149 thin sections were
studied. The microfacies analysis showing two major successions with Red
Bed and Non-Red Bed marl and marly limestone, occasionally interbedded
with thinly beds of shale, sandstone and siltstone. These comprised of five
microfacies are Oligostegina Marly Limestone, Globotruncana Marly
Limestone, Marlstone with Microfossils, Red Marlstone, and Red to
Variegated Calcareous Sandstone with Radiolarian (Debrise Flow) Making
20 thin sections from Gendilly section(GS) (the typical section of this study)
for microscopic study of minute fossils (nannofossils) examination, for this
study proved that the Cretaceous Oceanic Red Beds (CORBs) dating is
Mastrichtian age. The Microfossils and nannofossils tests proved the
presence of Danian Age in studied area.
This study has proved that the carbonate content in red limestone beds
ranged between 53.5-100.0 %, while this percentage ranged in red marly
rocks between 20.5-50.0 %, But in the rocks that do not contain red beds,
Carbonate content in limestone rocks ranged between 52.0-100.0 %, and in
marl rocks this ratio ranged between 27.5-49.5 %.

The Aqra - Bekhme, Shiranish, Tanjero and Kolosh formations outcrop in the High Folded Zone, Northern Iraq in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah governorates. The formations have been studied at two selected geological sections (Bekhme Gorge and Zarda Bee). In this study, these formations are investigated based on both benthic and planktonic foraminifera. Depending on foraminifer’s investigation, three biozones have been recognized; two biozones are identified in the benthic foraminifera and the third one is identified in the planktonic foraminifera as follow:

  1. Siderolites calcitropodes - Orbitoides apiculatus - Omphalocyclus macroporus Assemblage zone.
  2. Loftusia morgani range zone.
  3. Aba

Facies Analysis, Diagenetic Features and Depositional Environment of the Kometan Formation from Northeastern Iraq
...Show More Authors

This study involves microfacies analysis of the Kometan Formation from northeastern Iraq supported by detailed petrographic investigation for the main components and diagenetic processes using a petrographic microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and X-Ray diffraction (XRD). The techniques have revealed that the formation includes two microfacies; lime wackestone and lime packstone microfacies which in turn are subdivided into seven sub-microfacies, that were deposited in the quiet and deep marine environment. Planktonic foraminifera (keeled and globular chamber types) are dominant, along with oligostegina in addition to subordinate benthonic foraminifera and fine-grained bioclasts. Calcite forms the main mineralogical compositi

SEQUENCE STRATIGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF THE MID‐CRETACEOUS MISHRIF FORMATION, SOUTHERN MESOPOTAMIAN BASIN, IRAQ
...Show More Authors

The middle Cenomanian – early Turonian Mishrif Formation, a major carbonate reservoir unit in southern Iraq, was studied using cuttings and core samples and wireline logs (gamma‐ray, density and sonic) from 66 wells at 15 oilfields. Depositional facies ranging from deep marine to tidal flat were recorded. Microfacies interpretations together with wireline log interpretations show that the formation is composed of transgressive and regressive hemicycles. The regressive hemicycles are interpreted to indicate the progradation of rudist lithosomes (highstand systems tract deposits) towards distal basinal locations such as the Kumait, Luhais and Abu Amood oilfield areas. Transgressive hemicycles (transgressive systems tract deposits)

Shiranish Formation (Late Campanian- Maastrichtian) that cropping out north east Iraq, is studied by microfacies analysis of 52 thin section collected from Hijran Section, about 10 km west Shaqlawa Town, Governorate of Erbil. According to petrography, mineralogy and organic contents, rocks are subdivided to crystalline carbonate and microfacies units (biowackstone, packstone, and mudstone facies). Biowackstone facies have high ratio of the rock components, while the other facies have low ratio. Microfacies analysis led to relatively quiet deep marine environment.

CALCAREOUS NANNOFOSSILS AND CHEMOSTRATIGRAPHY OF THE EARLY APTIAN OCEANIC ANOXIC EVENT 1A FROM NORTHERN IRAQ
...Show More Authors

Calcareous nannofossils were documented from the upper part of the Cretaceous Balambo Formation in northern Iraq with the aim of determining an evidence for the Oceanic Anoxic Event. A detailed investigation of the calcareous nannofossils led to the identification of twenty-four species. Regarding these data, Discolithus litterarius (Górka, 1957) was identified at the studied interval with the age of Early Aptian.

Early Aptian assemblages are dominated by nannoconids that drop sharply within the D. litterarius nannofossil zone, which may be related to the nannoconid crisis recorded in the Early Aptian in the other parts of the world. This event is coincided by a decrease in CaCO3<

Basin analysis of Cretaceous to Tertiary selected wells in Kirkuk and Bai Hassan Oil Fields, Kirkuk, Northern Iraq
...Show More Authors

Basin analysis (geohistory) is carried out on the Cretaceous to Tertiary succession in five wells at Kirkuk and Bai Hassan Oil Fields during the Aptian to the Recent. The Foothill Zone exhibited a complex subsidence and uplift history over a period of about 132 Ma. The results from studied wells backstripping provide a record of the subsidence and uplift history in a number of important Meso-Cenozoic depositional successions. They show that there are three distinct episodes separated by unconformity surfaces. The value of compaction varies from large during the Cretaceous period to less clearly during the Paleogene and then almost non-existent during the Neogene. Generally, the subsidence is continuous and gradual during Mesozoic and sud
