The Influence of Diagenesis Processes on the Reservoir Properties of Hartha Formation in Selected oil Fields, Northern Iraq

The Hartha Formation reservoir was evaluated to be produced in the near future in Y oil and J fields, West of the Tigris River in northern Iraq. Due to geological data analysis of the Hartha facies and diagenesis could enhance oil production with minimized risks, this research tried to deal with data to support the oil production. The Hartha reservoir is subdivided into five-rock units, Har-1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. It is of Heterogenic facies limestone, dolomite, dolomitic limestone and argillaceous dolomite. The Hartha Formation is a clean carbonate; it has an effective porosity. It consists of lime mudstone-packstone skeletal grain. This conclusion is based on the lithology, core microfacies, cutting, thin section and log interpretation variability.

The study aims to characterize the depositional and diagenetic properties of the Hartha carbonate and their effects on the reservoir quality. This research indicated that the depositional setting is a gentle slope ramp including outer, mid and inner ramps. The dissolution and dolomitization in near-surface and marine environments formed secondary porosity types as a vuggy, cavern, and melodic. The fracture is a good reservoir in the upper part of the Hartha reservoir. The lower section is affected by other diagenetic processes  causing a destructive effect on porosity such as compaction, Neomorphism  and cementation. The measured and calculated porosity with an integration of the measured permeability in the Hartha Reservoir gave a good reservoir quality to the formation. These data are coming from the analysis of the primary and secondary porosity. The petrophysical cut-off provided an excellent result for the rock properties as the net to gross ratio of the most units of the Hartha Reservoir.

Diagenesis Processes Impact on Reservoir Quality in Carbonate Yamama Formation /Faihaa Oil Field

The Yamama Formation is a significant reservoir in the southern part of Iraq. This formation consists of limestone deposited throughout the Lower Cretaceous period within main retrogressive depositional series. This study aims to identify the impact of the diagenesis processes on the reservoir’s characteristics (porosity and permeability). Diagenesis processes’ analysis and the identification of Yamama Formation depended on the examination of more than 250 thin sections of the core samples from two wells that were used to determine different diagenetic environments and processes. The three identified diagenetic environments that affected Yamama reservoir were the marine, meteoric and burial environments. Eight diagenetic pr

Electro-Facies and Petrophysical Properties of the Hartha Formation in Selected Wells of East Baghdad Oil Field

The Hartha Formation is a major carbonate succession deposited during the Late Campanian period. The current study depends on four selected wells (EB 1, 2, 4 and 30) within the East Baghdad oil field to study electrofacies and petrophysical properties related to the reservoir characterization.

The Hartha Formation is divided into three electro-facies units using GR and SP logs in Petrel software. The upper unit of the Hartha Formation is composed mainly of limestone. The middle unit is composing of thick layers of shale. The lower unit is composed mainly of limestone with few shale layers. The three units are divided into three types of rocks in relation to the total porosity: 1. High-moderate active porosity rocks (type I)

Diagenetic Features and Porosity Development for Hartha Formation in the Balad and East Baghdad Oil Fields, Central Iraq

The Hartha Formation (age Late Campanian – Early Maastrichtian) is considered an important oil reservoir in Iraq. The petrography and the diagenetic features were determined based on the analyses of 430 thin sections from selected wells within Balad and East Baghdad oil fields, Ba-2, Ba-3, EB-53, Eb-56 and EB-102.

The most important and common diagenesis processes that affect Hartha Formation include Cementation, Neomorphsim, Micrtitization, Dolomitization, Compaction, Dissolution, and Authigenic minerals. This diagenesis deformation on Hartha Formation has overall accentuated the reservoir quality heterogeneity.

The reservoir quality evolution is affected by destruction by grain compaction mechanical and chemica

Reservoir Characteristics for Khasib Formation in selected wells of East Baghdad Oil field, Iraq

Four subsurface sections and electrical, porosity logs, and gamma-ray logs of the Khasib Formation (age Late Turonian-Lower Coniacian) were studied to identify reservoir characteristics and to evaluate the reservoir properties of the Khasib reservoir units in the East Baghdad oilfield. The lithology of the formation is limestone throughout the whole sequence in all studied wells EB-83, EB-87, EB-92, and EB94. It is bounded conformably from the top by Tanuma Formation and has a conformable lower contact with Kifl Formation. The lower and upper boundaries of the formation were determined using well log analysis, and the formation was divided into three main rock units (Kh1, Kh2, and Kh3), depending on the porosity logs. The porosi

Basin analysis of Cretaceous to Tertiary selected wells in Kirkuk and Bai Hassan Oil Fields, Kirkuk, Northern Iraq

Basin analysis (geohistory) is carried out on the Cretaceous to Tertiary succession in five wells at Kirkuk and Bai Hassan Oil Fields during the Aptian to the Recent. The Foothill Zone exhibited a complex subsidence and uplift history over a period of about 132 Ma. The results from studied wells backstripping provide a record of the subsidence and uplift history in a number of important Meso-Cenozoic depositional successions. They show that there are three distinct episodes separated by unconformity surfaces. The value of compaction varies from large during the Cretaceous period to less clearly during the Paleogene and then almost non-existent during the Neogene. Generally, the subsidence is continuous and gradual during Mesozoic and sud
