Comparison of Provenance of the Injana and Mukdadiya Formations in Zorbatiya area, Wasit Governorate, East of Iraq

Petrographic, heavy mineral and clay mineral analyses are carried out for the sandstone and the mudstone units of Injana and Mukdadiya Formations in Zorbatiya area, Wasit Governorate, East of Iraq. The sandstones and the mudstones are nested as repeated fining–upwards successions, representing fluvial deposits. The sandstones of the Mukdadiya Formation is gravelly and on occasions becomes conglomerate. The sandstone of both formations comprises rock fragments, quartz and feldspars. The rock fragments are the dominant component consisting sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rock fragments, accordingly these sandstone are classified as litharenite. The clay minerals of the mudstone units are mostly illite, kaolinite, chlorite and mixed-layered clay. The mineralogic and petrographic data suggest the derivation of Injana and Mukdadiya Formations from nearby sources with contribution from igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary provenance and deposited in arid climate. The Mukdadiya deposits are rich with Paleogene deposits, some of which are coarse and cobbly.

The facies analysis of the Cenomanian –Turonian succession of Surdash –Shaqlawa area, NE. Iraq

Three formations were studied from seven outcrops extend from Surdash to
Shaqlawa (Cenomanian – Santonian), they comprise Dokan, Gulneri and Kometan
Formations. Four microfacies and eight submicrfacies are identified depending on
this microfacies, we determine the depositional environments. Dokan Formation is
deposited in open-marine deep shelf environment; it could be deposited at deeper
shelf to slope and basinal settings. While Gulneri Formation deposited in open sea
shelf, as well as at outer shelf settings, the sediments consist of organic–carbon rich
black shale and consider a record of the ocean anoxic event 2, Kometan Formation
represent pelagic sediments characterize the deep-marine basins in open mar

Mineralogy of Sand Dune Fields around Hor Al-Dalmaj Between Wasit and Al-Qadesiyah Governorates - Central Iraq

Vast percentage of the Hor Al-Dalmaj area is covered with sand dunes fields due to desertification. Therefore, it is vital to research these dunes to limit their bad action on the natural environment by defining the mineralogical composition of these sand dunes deposited around Hor Al-Dalmaj lake between Wast and Al-Qasisiyah Governorates to determine the provenance or the source of these dunes. Barchan and Nabkha dunes represent the main types that are recognized. The dimensions of barchan dunes are recognizing by a height range of about 0.5 to 3m, with lateral extension ranging from 2 to 15m and longitudinal extinction ranging from 3 to 15m. While the dimensions of nabkha dunes range from 10 cm to 2m in length and 15cm to 2m high. Acco

Surface-Subface Geochemical and Mineralogical Study of Gypcrete in Alexandria Area Central Iraq

Gypsiferous soil deposits (Gypcrete) are weakly consolidate earthy mixture of secondary gypsum, sand and clay. It is formed in arid and semi- arid area with annual precipitation rainfall less than 400mm. These sediments occur in surface and subsurface in region of little rainfall and rapid evaporation. This research deals with the study of gypcrete in Alexandria to improve the mineralogical and geochemical properties of the gypcrete. The gypcrete soil is used as raw material to produce the plaster for building purposes. Three samples of gypcrete were chemically and geochemically analyzed. The common mineral is howed in 0-0.5m Gypsum followed by Calcite in 0-1m and Quartz in 1-1.5m due to leaching and infiltration by rainfall as well as it

Hydrochemistry of Groundwater in Northeast Part of Anbar Governorate – West of Iraq

A groundwater quality assessment has been carried out in northeast part of Anbar governorate in western Iraq. We analyzed hydrochemical parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids presence of ions to describe groundwater quality. The study area has the only confined aquifer within the geological formation extended in area. Values of groundwater hydrochemical parameters were ranged from (7) to (7.9) for ph, (1599) to (6800) µmhos/cm for electrical conductivity (EC) and (1048) to (4446) mg/l for total dissolved solids (TDS). The origins and types of groundwater in the area were of marine origin and MgCl2 water type while only (6) samples were of continental origin and Na2SO4 wate

Mineralogical study of Sand Dunes Fields in Najaf Governorate, Southern Iraq

The purpose of the present paper is to define the minerals content in the Najaf Dunes fields and the origin of these sand sediments in the southwestern parts of Iraq. There are three types of dunes in this field were described, the barchan, longitudinal, and dome dunes and additional types e.g. Nabkha, Barchanoid ridges, and sand sheet dunes. The study area was divided into three areas according to the geographical position, and numerous samples were collected from this field.

The mineralogical study consists from three methods these are; the first: separation of sand samples into the light and heavy minerals by heavy liquids, where performed on 30 samples. The second method; carbonate content performed on 60 samples, and the thir

Hydrological and Radiological Studies of Water Resources by Using Radon in Hashimiya Area- Middle of Iraq.

Radon concentrations are measured for water samples collected from twenty wells which were drilled in Hashimiya area in addition to twelve samples of surface water using Alpha Gaurd. 140 samples, 7 for each well, were collected represent wet season in continuous pumping and 20 samples, one for each well, were collected represent dry season. Concentration of radon in groundwater is many times of its concentration in surface water. The minimum concentration in groundwater is about (7) Bq/L and (5) Bq/L while the maximum concentration is about (31) Bq/L and (19) Bq/L in wet season and dry season respectively. The range of radon concentrations in river water is between (1.06) Bq/L and (1.21) Bq/L. This study has indicated that there is a flo

Neotectonic Activity of Segmented Alluvial Fans Along Hemr in South Anticline, East Iraq

A quantitative analysis of geomorphic indices was carried out to understand the impacts of tectonics on the geomorphological relief of drainage basins and alluvial fans. Based on field work, satellite images and aerial photographs interpretation, five stages of alluvial fanswere recognized within the study area. Theyare of a coalesced type, forming continuous belt of Bajada, andcovering vast areas whichextend along the southwestern limb of Hemrinanticline. The alluvial fans’ sediments lie unconformably over pre- Quaternary sediments represented by angular unconformity. The earlier stages of the fanswere developed during the Plio- Pleistocene age, whereas the later stage represents the sediments of the Holocene age. Fourdistinct seg

Diagenetic Features and Porosity Development for Hartha Formation in the Balad and East Baghdad Oil Fields, Central Iraq

The Hartha Formation (age Late Campanian – Early Maastrichtian) is considered an important oil reservoir in Iraq. The petrography and the diagenetic features were determined based on the analyses of 430 thin sections from selected wells within Balad and East Baghdad oil fields, Ba-2, Ba-3, EB-53, Eb-56 and EB-102.

The most important and common diagenesis processes that affect Hartha Formation include Cementation, Neomorphsim, Micrtitization, Dolomitization, Compaction, Dissolution, and Authigenic minerals. This diagenesis deformation on Hartha Formation has overall accentuated the reservoir quality heterogeneity.

The reservoir quality evolution is affected by destruction by grain compaction mechanical and chemica
