The effect of Al-Wand lake on the shallow groundwater aquifer in Khanaqin area, Diyala Governorate, Iraq

The relationship between Al-Wand lake and groundwater was studied in Khanaqin cityby identifying water levels for Al-Wand lake and the shallow groundwater aquifer for 2019 and 2020. The hydrochemical analyses of Al-Wand river water, Al-Wand lake water and shallow groundwater, and identifying the grain size analysis and mineralogy of the surface sediments have been done. This relationship was adopted on climate data of the study area by knowing which seasons contained water surplus or water deficit, and  porosity and permeability define of soil that affects groundwater movement, and identify the salinity that effect on water quality.

Natural Attenuation Modelling of Heavy-Metal in Groundwater of Kirkuk City, Iraq

This study deals with the shallow alluvial aquifer situated beneath the urban area of kirkuk city. The ancient part of the city (Shorja) is affected by seepage from local agricultural areas causing relatively high heavy metals concentration in groundwater. The selection of polluted site depended on the highest TDS value (3856 mg/L) associated with the highest heavy metal concentrations (Pb, Ni, Co and Zn) in groundwater. This study focuses on the evaluation of natural attenuation effectivity for long-term protection of groundwater quality using realistic three-dimensional reactive-transport groundwater model. The requirements of 3-dimensional reactive transport model were obtained from field observation and laboratory works, in addition

Defining the Feature of Cold Wave (Al-Marba'aniyah) in Iraq: Defining the Feature of Cold Wave (Al-Marba'aniyah) in Iraq

Abstract:
Al-Marba'aniyah, which is a long cold wave, was defined by ancient
Iraqis. It represents the coldest days in Iraq. In this research paper, a new
scale was put to define it. It shows that the period between the minimum
temperature degree recoded in December and the minimum temperature
degree recorded in January is considered to be the period of Al-Marba'aniyah.
The research concluded that Al-Marba'aniyah is unsteady and it changes in
the days of its occurrence. It was also concluded that the dates of the
beginning and the end of Al-Marba'aniyah are unsteady, too. Moreover, it was
found out that each of the Siberian high, European high, and finally the
subtropical high are the responsible systems for

Environmental Geochemical Assessment of Heavy Metals in Soil and Sediment of (Shatt-Al-Hilla) Babil Governorate, Central Iraq

Heavy metals concentration in the soils and sediments has increased worldwide during the last century as a result of the rapid increase in population which combined by an increase in human activity as agriculture,  industrial and many other activities. Ten soil and three river sediment samples were collected from 10 main sampling stations at Shatt Al-Hilla River from Sada area to Dora Bridge in Babylon province. The chemical analysis of the sedimentation sample in the laboratory included pH calculation, electrical conductivity (EC) (Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), organic matter (OM), and heavy metals as (Mn, Ni, Cr, Zn, Cu, Co, Pb, Cd, As and Fe). Indirect geochemical background (IGB) of heavy metal was calculated by the iterative

Identification of new species record of Cyanophyceae in Diyala River, Iraq based on 16S rRNA sequence data

Abstract. Hassan FM, Mahdi WM, Al-Haideri HH, Kamil DW. 2022. Identification of new species record of Cyanophyceae in Diyala River, Iraq based on 16S rRNA sequence data. Biodiversitas 23: 5239-5246. The biodiversity and water quality of the Diyala River require screening water in terms of biological contamination, because it is the only water source in Diyala City and is used for many purposes. This study aimed to identify a new species record of Cynaophyceae and emphasize the importance of using molecular methods beside classic morphological approaches, particularly in the water-shrinkage-aqua system. Five different sites along Diyala River were selected for Cyanophyceae identification. Morphological examination and 16S rRNA sequen

The Effects of Intake Water Quality and Filtration Unit Performance on the Efficiency of the Al- Rasheed Water Treatment Plant in Baghdad, Iraq

Water treatment plants play an important role in the purification and distribution of safe drinking water to the public. The present study focused on the performance assessment of the Al-Rasheed water treatment plant [ARWTP]. The main objectives of the assessment were to determine the efficiency of various plant units as well as the quality of inlet water from the Tigris River. Results obtained from the collected data indicated the presence of high concentrations of soluble nitrate and phosphate ions in the filtered water. The removal efficiency of alkalinity, EC, total hardness, SO4, Cl, NO3 and PO4 were found to be (+11.05%), (-0.67%), (-29.33%), (-2.64%), (-6.25%), (-32.13%), and (0%) respecti

Aquifer depth determination of low permeability layers using geo-resistivity data: A case study of Enyigba mine area and environs, South Eastern Nigeria

Many geophysical methods have been applied to locate groundwater in Nigeria’s rural and urban villages. Locating groundwater in low permeability formations like shales and siltstones is even more challenging due to the difficulty of mapping fracture zones within these formations. The fracture zones serve as potential aquifers in low permeability formations and have been the object of groundwater search in shales, siltstones and other low permeability formations. The electrical resistivity method has proven helpful in fracture mapping within low permeability formations due to the existing resistivity contrast usually observed between the fractured and non-fractured sections in the Shales and Siltstones. Three vertical electri
