Anthropocentric perspective on climate variability: the destination of antibiotics in the Tigris river is not restricted
...Show More Authors
ABSTRACT

This study aimed to detect antibiotics in water, particulate, plant, and sediment in the Tigris River within Baghdad City, in addition to their spatiotemporal variations, and related physicochemical parameters. Five sites were selected in the river. Three target antibiotics (tetracycline, gentamycin, and ciprofloxacin) were detected in water, particulate, plant, and sediment of the river at all selected sites. The results clearly showed that the concentrations of target antibiotics were sediment > water > plant > particulate. Site 3 is considered as a risk site where high concentrations of all antibiotics during the wet and dry seasons were recorded. Tetracycline was recorded as a high concentration among other antibiotics in the river. Spearman's correlation and principal component analysis showed only a weak correlation between dissolved oxygen and the electric conductivity of the river's sediment with target antibiotics. To our knowledge, this was the first study of antibiotic traces in the Tigris River ecosystem. Lack of wastewater management, absence of antibiotic treatment, and less public awareness of antibiotic consumption are the main causes of antibiotic risk in the river ecosystem.

The Impacts of Environmental-Geomorphology of the Kut Barrage on the Tigris Waterway and the Neighboring regions
...Show More Authors

The research dealt with the effect of Kut Barrage on the geomorphological processes and the natural environment system in the course of the Tigris between the cities of Al-Ahrar and Kut in central Iraq. It was clear from the research the contribution of Kut Barrage in changing the surface runoff system between the front and back of the barrage, as well as changing the type of processes and the prevailing geomorphic forms, as the sedimentation activates the front of the barrage and erosion at its back, which affected the change in the morphology of the river, sediment retention at the front of the barrage, the burial of the bottom and reducing the validity of the stream. This also affects the efficiency of the barrage’s work and coastal er

The Effect of Expected Water Shortage on Net Primary Productivity and Rain Use Efficiency in the Tigris-Euphrates Basin
...Show More Authors

Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, originating in Turkey and cutting through both Syria and Iraq, have experienced drastic reductions in water flows in recent years due to increasing water demand, hydro-engineering projects, and climate change. The decline in water flows has led to decreased agricultural yields. Iraq reported its worst cereal harvest in a decade in 2009, indicating that with a decline in water supplies, a potential food security problem emerges. This study, therefore, addressed the effect of water availability on (1) Net Primary Productivity (NPP) and (2) Rain Use Efficiency (RUE) in the Tigris-Euphrates (T-E) basin. Results displayed that NPP increases significantly from the arid and semi-arid sites in the south to the wetter

The distribution of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Iraq: demographic and climate aspects
...Show More Authors

AbstractBackgroundLeishmaniasis is endemic in Iraq, where both cutaneous and visceral forms of the disease are reported.ObjectivesTo determine the prevalence of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) and to identify associations of CL with age, sex, season, and provinces depending on some demographic and climatic aspects.MethodsThis study is retrospective and includes reported cases of infections using the available surveillance database taken from the Iraqi Ministry of Health for the years 2011, 2012, and 2013 for all provinces of Iraq.ResultsMen and boys were found to be at higher risk for CL compared with women and girls. The majority of cases were recorded among those in age groups 5–14 and 15–45 years old. Most cases were recorded from lowla

The present study is concern with the interaction between the naidid worms diversity and the species of aquatic plant within which the worms found . For this purpose, two species of aquatic plant were used, Ceratophyllum demersum and Eichhornia crassipes. 12 samples of aquatic plants were collected , as one sample monthly for a period from September 2012 to September 2013 from different site on Tigris river within Baghdad City. From C. demersum, 1428 individuals, were sorted during the study period, related to 17 species. 12 species of subfamily Naidinae which are Chaetogaster limnaei , C. diastrophus , Ophidonais serpentine , Dero ( Dero) digitata. , D.(D.) evelinae , Nais pseudobtosa , N.simplex, N.stolci , N.Paradalis , N.elingiu

The Winged Bull in the Assyrian Civilization- A Semiotic Perspective
...Show More Authors

Every cultural achievement is a creative text, and every text is a group of signs. The Winged Bull sculpture is a sort of text that is not confined to some signs; indeed, its cultural signs go far beyond as they are open-ended, everlasting and it lends itself to various horizons of interpretation. The recipient has to combine the signs of this sculpture, which belong to different patterns, in the pursuit for perfection so that he can decode its media message.
I have tackled this sculpture by adopting a semiotic approach. The semiotic approach is a modern critical approach which is as wide as culture and as rich as knowledge. It has been linked to modernism, which in turn has been linked to modern critical approaches, because it can
