On the effectiveness of shear reinforcement type in <scp>GFRP</scp>‐reinforced concrete beams: Experimental study
...Show More Authors
Abstract<p>This study investigated the shear performance of concrete beams with GFRP stirrups vs. traditional steel stirrups. Longitudinal glass fiber‐reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars were used to doubly reinforce the tested beams at both the top and bottom of their cross sections. To accomplish this, several stirrup spacings were provided. Eight beam specimens, measuring 300 × 250 × 2400 mm, were used in an experimental program to test under a two‐point concentrated load with an equal span‐to‐depth ratio until failure. Four beams in Group I have standard mild steel stirrups of 8 mm diameter, while four beams in Group II have GFRP stirrups with the same adopted diameter. The difference between the beams in each group was mainly due to the spacing between the reinforcing stirrups in the constant shear and pure bending spans. The test matrix consists of two beams with shear reinforcement equally distributed at 100 mm and 200 mm in constant shear and pure bending spans, respectively. Stirrups were placed uniformly over the whole effective span of the other six beams. In two beams, stirrups were placed 100 mm apart; in the other two, 75 mm; and in the last two, 50 mm. Test outcomes showed that GFRP stirrups, as opposed to steel stirrups, decreased the ultimate load by around 8%–27% based on stirrup spacing, while reducing the stirrup spacing increased the shear capacity. Also, the presence of compression GFRP bars and GFRP stirrups in the pure bending span led to an increase in the flexural stiffness of the tested beams. Consequently, this increase contributed to a higher ductility index. Accordingly, it is essential to prioritize adequate shear strength above flexural strength when designing GFRP‐reinforced concrete beams, as evidenced by the continuous observation of flexure‐shear cracking as the primary mode of failure in almost all tested beams.</p>

Impact Resistance of Limestone Cement Self Compacting Concrete Reinforced by Locally Available Grids
...Show More Authors

Impact strength of self-compacted concrete is a field of interest, mostly when the concrete is produced from sustainable materials. This research's main objective is to clarify the ability to use two types of Portland limestone cement (Karasta and Tasluja) in self compacted concrete under impact loading, further to the economic and environmental benefits of the limestone cement. The impact loading was applied by a low-speed test, using the drop ball on concrete. Moreover, the study reveals the resistance of the grids reinforced concrete to impact loading by using polymer grid, and steel grid reinforced concrete slabs. Mixes reinforced by steel mesh had the highest results, indicating that the steel mesh was more robust because it had

Behavior of Reinforced Concrete Columns Subjected to Axial Load and Cyclic Lateral Load
...Show More Authors

Columns subjected to pure axial load rarely exist in practice. Reinforced concrete columns are usually subjected to combination of axial and lateral actions and  deformations, caused by  spatially‐complex loading patterns as during earthquakes causes lateral deflection that in turn affects the horizontal stiffness. In this study, a numerical model was developed in threedimensional nonlinear finite element and then validated against experimental results reported in the literatures,
to investigate the behavior of conventionally RC columns subjected to axial load and  . lateral reversal cyclic loading. To achieve this goal, numerical analysis was conducted by using finite element program ABAQUS/Explicit. The variables co

Frequency Domain Analysis for Geometric Nonlinear Seismic Response of Tall Reinforced Concrete Buildings
...Show More Authors

This paper aims to study the second-order geometric nonlinearity effects of P-Delta on the dynamic response of tall reinforced concrete buildings due to a wide range of earthquake ground motion forces, including minor earthquake up to moderate and strong earthquakes. The frequency domain dynamic analysis procedure was used for response assessment. Reinforced concrete building models with different heights up to 50 stories were analyzed. The finite element software ETABS (version 16.0.3) was used to analyze reinforced concrete building models.

The study reveals that the percentage increase in buildings' sway and drift due to P-Delta effects are nearly constant for specific building height irrespective of the seism

Experimental and Numerical Comparison of Prestressed Perforated Concrete Rafters of Different Configurations
...Show More Authors
Abstract<p>This paper demonstrates an experimental and numerical study aimed to compare the influence of openings of different configurations on the flexural behavior of prestressed concrete rafters. The experimental program consisted of testing six simply supported prestressed concrete rafters; 5 rafters are perforated, and the other one is solid as a reference. All rafters were tested under monotonic midpoint load. The variable which has been investigated in this work was the opening’s configuration (quadrilateral or circular) with the same upper and lower chords depths. The results indicate improvement in the beam flexural behavior using the circular openings compared to the quadrilateral o</p> ... Show More

A Cognitive Linguistic Study of the Present Simple: An Experimental Study in the University of Baghdad
...Show More Authors

Some research reports that cognitive grammar (CG) theory has good contributions to teaching English as a foreign language. In this research, the researchers seek to apply this theory and its principles when teaching the simple present tense to Iraqi students who face difficulties in differentiating between the multiple usages of this tense. To achieve this objective, the researchers have conducted an experimental study on a group of 60 Iraqi students in the University of Baghdad, College of Education for Women. Langacker’s (2003) theory has been adopted in the analysis of the cognitive relations to understand the common and different connections of these usages of the simple present. The study has concluded that the cognitive grammar t

Proposed Design Charts for Reinforced Concrete Spread Foundations Subjected to Concentric Load
...Show More Authors

The design of reinforced concrete spread foundations mainly depends on soil bearing capacity, loading value, and column size. So for each design case, tiresome calculations and time consumption are needed. In this paper, generalized design charts are presented and plotted according to derivations based on the ACI 318 M-2019 Code. These charts could be used directly by the structural designers to estimate the column size, foundation thickness, and dimensions as well as the foundation reinforcement under a certain given concentric load assuming a uniformly distributed contact pressure underneath the foundation. Of noteworthy, these charts are oriented to deal with square isolated footings with a square concentric column, covering reasonable r

The effect of natural factors on changing soil uses in the marshes: An experimental study using Landsat satellite data
...Show More Authors

The study aimed to analyze the effect of meteorological factors (rainfall rate and temperature) on the change in land use in the marshes of the Al‐Majar Al‐Kabir region in southern Iraq. Satellite images from Landsat 7 for 2012 and Landsat 8 for 2022 were used to monitor changes in the land coverings, the images taken from the Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) and Operational Land Imager (OLI) sensors of the Landsat satellite. Geometric correction was used to convert images into a format with precise geographic coordinates using ArcMap 10.5. The maximum likelihood classification method was used to examine satellite image data using a supervised approach, and the data were analyzed statistically. We obtained clear images of the area,
