Possible Augmentive Effect of Antioxidant Vitamin C in Patients with Essential Hypertension Treated with Amlodipin or Enalapril
...Show More Authors

Hypertension is identified as one of the most significant risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). There is growing evidence showing that oxidative stress plays a major role in hypertension. Increased production of reactive oxygen species and decrease bioavailability of antioxidant have been demonstrated in experimental and human hypertension. The present study was directed to determine the beneficial effect of the antioxidant vitamin C in patients with essential hypertension treated with the calcium channel blocker (amlodipine) or with the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (enalapril). Ninety six patients (50 females and 46 males) with essential hypertension and treated with amlodipine or enalapril, age (50.43 ± 0.55 year) were participated in this study and divided in to: Twenty five patients received amlodipine 5mg tablet once daily (group 1), twenty five patients received the same dose of amlodipine plus 500mg of vitamin C tablet twice daily (group 2), twenty three patients received enalapril 5 mg tablet once daily (group 3), and twenty three patients received the same dose of enalapril plus 500mg of vitamin C tablet twice daily (group 4). Twenty apparently healthy subjects (11 females and 9 males) also participated in this study as control group (group 5). All patients were treated and followed up for one month. The mean blood pressures were measured for each patient before treatment and one, two, three and four weeks after treatment. Serum malondialdehyde (MDA), lipid profile, electrocardiogram (ECG) parameters and heart rate were measured for each patient before treatment and two and four weeks after treatment. The addition of vitamin C to amlodipine or enalapril treated patients had resulted in a significant (p<0.05) lowering effect on mean blood pressure after two, three and four weeks. On the other hand, the addition of vitamin C to amlodipine or enalapril treated patients had resulted in a significant lowering of serum MDA after two and four weeks of treatment. While there was no significant change in lipid profile or ECG parameters and heart rate of patients in group two and four after two and four weeks of vitamin C treatment as compared to their values at zero time and to patients in group one and three respectively. The study indicates that oxidative stress may have a significant role in essential hypertension, and addition of the antioxidant vitamin C to antihypertensive drugs used in this study can give a good blood pressure lowering effect and good protection against lipid peroxidation.

The Role of Serum Chitinase-3-Like 1 Protein (YKL-40) Level and its Correlation with Proinflammatory Cytokine in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis
...Show More Authors

Chitinase-3-like 1 protein (YKL-40) is a glycoprotein primarily produced in the arthritic joint and plays a crucial role in inflammatory processes. The aim of the study is to establish the role of YKL-40 as a biomarker for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) compared to proinflammatory biomarkers and disease activity. The study included 58 patients and 18 control. Diseases activity score (DAS-28) and clinical disease activity index (CDAI) were measured. Serum level of YKL-40, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1B (IL-1β), erythrocyte sedimentation (ESR), rheumatoid factor (RF), C-reactive protein (CRP), and anti-citrullinated protein antibody (ACPA) were assessed. The results showed that the median serum YKL-40 level which was 5.42

Assessment of Associated Factors with Risk of Relapse in Schizophrenic Patients at Psychiatric Hospitals in Baghdad City
...Show More Authors

Schizophrenic patients who are at great risk of relapse are characterized by non-compliance,
denial of illness and need for treatment and no contact with family. So, the prevention of relapse
and readmission to hospital are crucial in mental health practice.
The present study is a descriptive-analytical study that was carried out from November 2nd
2006 through the end of 20 of April 2008.
Objectives: To assess the associated factors with the risk of relapse in schizophrenic patients at
psychiatric hospitals in Baghdad city.
Methodology: A purposive "non-probability" sample of (50) schizophrenic patient who hasd
relapsed was involved in the present study. Data were collected through the use of the constructed

THE PREVALENCE AND ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE OF PSEUDOMONAS SPECIES IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC SUPPURATIVE OTITIS MEDIA
...Show More Authors

Background: Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is the result of aninitial episode of acute otitis media and is characterized by a persistent discharge from the middle ear through a tympanic perforation for at least 2 weeks duration. It is an important cause of preventable hearing loss, particularly in the developing world.Methods. 1. To get an overview on the bacterial ear infection profile in general 2. To assess the antibiotic resistance of Pseudomonal infection (PS) particularly since it is usually the commonest infection to cause otitis media and the most difficult to treat due to the problem of multi drug resistance... A cross sectional study was done which included 405 patient of CSOM patients196 (48%) case were males ,209 (52

Evaluation of anti Epstien-Barr Virus antibodies in female patients with autoimmune hepatitis type-1
...Show More Authors

Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) infection is associated with broad spectrum of clinical manifestationsdepending on the immune status of the host, To analyze their possible role in the complication ofautoimmune hepatitis, we investigated (30) female patients with autoimmune hepatitis type-1 of(10-40)years and 25 healthy female of same ages(control groups). Both groups were carried outto measure the levels of EBV-CA IgM, IgG Ab, EBV-EA IgM, IgG Ab, and EBV-NA IgM, IgGAb using indirect immunoflourescent assay (IFAT).The prevalence of EBV-CA IgM, IgG Ab were(10%,20%) and EBV-EA IgM, IgG Ab were (10% and20%) respectively, while the prevalence ofEBV-NA IgG Ab was( 3.33%) and there are no prevalence of EBV-NA IgM Ab. Study the role of CoQ10 and IGFBP-1 in obese male patients with diabetic mellitus type 2. ELISA method was used to assay Serum CoQ10 and IGFBP-1. Blood was taken with drawn sample from 30 obese normal patients with age range (40-60) years, 30 diabetic patients with age range (40-60) years at duration of disease (1-5) years and 30 normal healthy patients. The mean difference between T2DM according to CoQ10 (12.5±1.1) was decreased than the mean of IFG (21.8±3.2) (P 0.002) and the mean difference between T2DM according to IGFBPs (0.65±0.06) was decreased than the mean of IFG (3.2±0.3) (P 0.000).
