Phytochemical Investigation and Antioxidant Activity of Iraqi Tribulus terrestris
...Show More Authors

The aim of the present study was to characterize the Iraqi Tribulus terrestris for the presence of biologically active phyto-chemicals using methanolic extracts of the plant (aerial parts) by Gas Chromatography –Mass spectrometry (GC/MS), while the mass spectra of the compounds found in the extract was matched with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) library , in addition to study the antioxidant activity of plant extract , results confirmed the presence of therapeutically potent compounds in the Iraqi Tribulus terrestris extract predominantly alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins and terpenoids. Antioxidant potential of Iraqi Tribulus terrestris herbal preparations was evaluated by determination of blood glutathione, serum ascorbic acid and serum superoxide dismutase in rats. The obtained results demonstrated that T. terrestris preparations possess a significant antioxidant activity.

Production and antibacterial activity of biosurfactant from Saccharomyces cerevisiae
...Show More Authors
Abstract<p>A total of four types of instant dry yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae which are Gloripan, Swan, Super Man (China) and Saf (Turkey), were obtained from the local market in Baghdad, Iraq. All the types were identified according to their morphological characteristics and screened for their ability to produce biosurfactant by oil spread method. Biosurfactant was extracted and partially purified by precipitation with ammonium sulfate at saturation ratio75%. Antibacterial activity of crude and partially purified biosurfactant was tested against twenty isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the results showed that crude biosurfactant has no</p> ... Synthesis and Antimicrobial Activity of Nitrogen-Containing Anthraquinone Derivatives
...Show More Authors

New substituted anthraquinones with amino derivations fragments were synthesized through the substitution of bromine atom by different amines using the Ullmann coupling reaction. Obtained compounds based on anthraquinone used for experimental antimicrobial studies. The structure of the synthesized compounds was confirmed by LC-MS and 1H, 13C NMR spectroscopy. Studies on planktonic microorganisms have shown that the first synthesized anthraquinone derivatives have an inhibitory effect against bacteria and fungi. The triazene 1-(3-(benzoic acid(triaz-1-en-1-ol(-4-(1H-imidazol-1-yl(-9,10-dioxo-9,10-dihydroanthracene -2-sulfonic acid, have wide spectrum of activity, growth retardation zones against gram-positive micro

Zinc Oxide Nanoparticle Properties and Antimicrobial Activity
...Show More Authors

In this study, zinc oxide was prepared by pulsed laser ablation method (PLAL), which is an easy-to-use and inexpensive physical method. The optical properties were studied using UV-Vis spectrometers, structure properties by (XRD) to calculate the crystalline size, and particle size determination by Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) assays and it was proved that they are within the ideal nanoscale for biological application. These ZnO NPs were employed on the inhibitory activity of different types of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as on fungi, and it was noted their ability to penetrate the bacterial cell wall and inhibit its action.

The objective of this study was to investigate and compare among five different methods of contraception including combined oral contraceptive pills (COC), Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA), copper Intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD), vaginal spermicides and male condom used in Hawler City through estimate of their effect, relative failure rate, percentage of use, adherence and compliance and adverse effects of each contraceptive method. In order to reach to these aims, a retrospective study was conducted in Hawler City in Azadi Health Care Center over a period of 6 months from 22th November, 2010 to 15th May, 2011 during which data collection and subjects follow up for 3 months had been achieved.
