Intestinal mucositis is referring to inflammatory or ulcerative lesions of the oral or gastrointestinal tract; one of the main reasons is treatment with cancer chemotherapy. The prodrug Irinotecan is converted by carboxylesterase to the active metabolite SN-38, conjugated by UGT enzyme to SN-38G and then deconjugated by ?-glucoronidase produced by intestinal bacterial flora to produce SN-38. Irinotecan induces intestinal mucositis and diarrhea due to increased concentration of its active metabolite (SN-38).To evaluate the protective effect of carvone, I.P injection of (75mg/kg/day) of irinotecan for 4 days to induce intestinal mucositis, carvone administered to mice orally for 6 days starting from day 1. Results showed that carvone (50mg/Kg and 100mg/Kg) significantly and by dose-dependent manner attenuated body weight loss (-9.39±1.56 vs. -23.21±1.65 %), diarrhea scores (0.50±0.244 vs. 2.67±0.211) and serum TNF-? level (1361.44±55.075 vs. 3402.12±321.56 ng/ml) compared to experimental model group. In conclusion, carvone exerted a dose dependent anti-inflammatory and protective effect by attenuation irinotecan-induced intestinal mucositis.
Objectives: In developing countries like Iraq, diarrhea was responsible for 70% of deaths among pediatrics. This study was designed to determine Iraqi mothers’ knowledge and malpractices associated with diarrhea management in pediatrics. Methods: A cross-sectional pilot study was done on a convenient sample of mothers in Baghdad – Iraq. Data collection was done using a validated questionnaire specifically designed for this study.Result: Most participants preferred to consult physicians or pharmacists about pediatrics diarrhea management. Breastfeeding was stopped by 19% of participants, whereas 35% of mothers who depend on formulated milk discontinued it. Only 30% of participants use oral rehydration solution therapy always as a

On the other hand, diarrhea is especially common and severe among cancer patients that develop neutropenia, either due to the disease itself or due to the intensive chemotherapy. There are many causes of diarrhea among those patients, but intestinal infections still an important etiology among them.
Objectives: to study the frequency of diarrhea among neutropenic children, with its infectious etiologies, especially the bacterial, fungal and parasitic causes.
Type of the study:Cross-sectional study.
Methods: the study was done in the Oncology

Aim: The study was designed to assess the protective effect of cranberry fruit extract on selected genotoxic parameters induced by cisplatin in mice’s bone marrow. Methods: 56 male albino mice were randomLy divided into two equal numbers (28 mice) for each part of the study [Part one: for the evaluation of chromosomal aberrations and the mitotic index; and Part two: for the evaluation of micronucleus index]; and for each part, mice were randomly divided into 4 groups: Group I [negative Control/orally-administered normal saline]; Group II [Orally-administered cranberry fr

Traditional diagnostic methods have historically limited the accurate identification of helminth infections in humans. Analysis of 450 human stool samples revealed an overall helminth infection rate of 5.7% using conventional techniques. The specific infection rates were 0.4% for Strongyloides stercoralis, 0.6% for Schistosoma mansoni, 1.7% for Hymenolepis nana, and 2.8% for Ascaris lumbricoides. Notably, no infections were recorded in the 30–39 and ≥40-year age groups, while the highest infection rate (16.3%, P≤0.01) was observed in indi

Juniperus oxycedrus was frequently used to treat a variety of infectious disorders, hyperglycemia, obesity, TB, bronchitis, inflammation, and pneumonia. Juniperus oxycedrus twigs and leaves were defatted with n-hexane using Soxhlet apparatus then the residue of plant material dried and re-extracted sequentially by two different solvents Ethylacetate and methanol. The pro-inflammatory markers IL-1 and iNOS, as well as the potential kidney biomarker KIM-1, TNF-α, and transcription factor NF-KB were measured using the RealTime Quantitative qPCR method.
