This study presents a theoretical investigation of encased composite columns under biaxial loading. The EUROCODE 4 theoretical model for generating the uniaxial interaction diagram was developed and used to meet biaxial requirements. The primary objective was to evaluate how internal steel ratios and configurations and concrete compressive strength influence the axial and biaxial flexural performance of the composite column. Ten models were analyzed, and the results were validated against previous experimental and analytical data. The results indicate that internal reinforcement is the primary driver of stiffness. Changing from an I-section to equivalent reinforcing bars or four steel angles significantly improves the y-axis stiffness. In addition, changes in concrete strength have a negligible effect on stiffness. Increasing concrete strength from 35 to 70 MPa only slightly changes the stiffness. A direct relationship between concrete strength and buckling resistance is observed. The interior steel configuration also shows that the distribution of steel within the column section modifies buckling resistance; therefore, no major reduction in the second moment of inertia is observed in any direction. Regarding flexural resistance, models with internal steel (steel sections or bars) placed at the column corners consistently outperform models with centralized sections. Symmetrical models provide uniform flexural strength across all angles of inclination of the neutral axis (0 to 90), unlike unsymmetrical models, which exhibit a weak axis and reduced flexural resistance. Finally, using steel angles at the column corners represents the most versatile model.
The use of external posttensioning technique for strengthening reinforced concrete girders has been considerably studied by many researchers worldwide. However, no available data are seen regarding strengthening full-scale composite prestressed concrete girders with external posttensioned technique under static and repeated loading. In this research, four full-scale composite prestressed I-shape girders of 16 m span were fabricated and tested under static and repeated loading up to failure. Accordingly, two girders were externally strengthened with posttensioned strands, while the other two girders were left without strengthening. The experimental tests include deflection, cracking load, ultimate strength and strains at midspan, a

Existing researches are insufficient in studying the influence of hybrid reinforced concrete composite columns encased by GFRP I-section (RCCCEG) and I-section steel (RCCCES). In this study twenty one (RC) specimens of a cross-section of 130 mm × 160 mm, with different length (long 1600 mm and short 750 mm) were encased by using I-section (steel and GFRP) and tested under various loading (concentric, eccentric and flexural loads). The test was focused on the influence of many parameters; load-carrying capacity, mode of failure, deformation and drawing an interaction diagram (N-

Six full-scale one way bubbled slabs of (3000mm) length with rectangular cross-sectional area of (460mm) width and (150mm) depth are tested as simply supported under two-concentrated load. The results of the finite element model are presented and compared with the experimental data of the tested slabs. Material nonlinearities due to cracking and crushing of concrete and yielding of reinforcement are considered. The general behavior of the finite element models represented by the load-deflection curves at midspan, crack pattern, ultimate load, load-concrete strain curves and failure m

Show MoreIn this study, the effect of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) section and compressive strength of concrete in composite beams under static and low velocity impact loads was examined. Modeling was performed and the obtained results were compared with the test results and their compatibility was evaluated. Experimental tests of four composite beams were carried out, where two of them are control specimen with 20 MPa compressive strength of concrete deck slab and 50 MPa for other. Bending characteristics were affected by the strength of concrete under impact loading case, as it increased maximum impact force and damping time at a ratio of 59% and reduced the damping ratio by 47% compared to the reference hybrid beam. Two concentrated loads were applied to each specimen at third points and the load was increased incrementally up to the yield of the specimen. Two types of splices were considered; the bearing type and the friction-grip type splices. For comparison, an analytical study was made for the tested girders in which the finite element analysis program (Abaqus) was used for analysis. It was found that the maximum test load for spliced girders with bearing type splices was in the range of (34%) to (67%) of the maximum test load for the reference girder. For girders spliced by using friction-grip t

The numerical results are validated with the experimental results obtained for columns subjected to static loads. A new loading condition with a 50 mm eccentricity is simulated to obtain additional data points for constructing the interaction diagram of load-moment curves, in an attempt to investigate the load-moment behavior for a reference column with a steel I-section and a column with a GFRP I-section.
