Effect of Thyroid Hormone Abnormalities on Hemoglobin A1c in Hemodialysis Patients Taking Erythropoietin

Abstract Background Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is a widely used test for glycemic control. It is done for chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Renal disease is accompanied by thyroid abnormalities, which affect HbA1c, especially in those taking erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs). We aimed to find the effect of thyroid dysfunction on HbA1c in hemodialysis patients taking ESAs and those who do not. Materials and Method Fifty six patients were included in this study, which was done between September 2017 and June 2018, in Baghdad Teaching Hospital. Thyroid stimulating hormone, free T3, free T4 and HbA1c measurements were done. The patients were divided into 2 groups; those who took ESAs and those who did not, then they were subdivided into those with hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism according to the Body mass index (BMI). Results Comparing HbA1c levels in hemodialysis patients taking ESAs and those who did not, showed no significant difference (5.79 ± 1.91 vs. 6.19 ± 1.64, P=0.09). The difference was also not significant in both hypothyroid and hyperthyroid patients in both high and low BMI patients. The only significant difference in HbA1c was between hyperthyroid and hypothyroid patients in those not taking ESAs, and having low BMI (4.97 ± 1.36 and 7.51 ± 0.87 respectively, P=0.02). Conclusion There is no significant influence of thyroid hormone changes on HbA1c levels in hemodialysis patients taking and not taking ESAs. Keywords Hemoglobin A1c, Chronic kidney disease, Thyroid dysfunction, Hemodialysis, Erythropoiesisstimulating agents.

Erythrocyte Magnesium Levels in type I and type II Iraq diabetic patients effect of antidiabetic treatment

Background: Direct measurement of intracellular magnesium using erythrocytes has been suggested as a sensitive indicator for the estimation of body magnesium store. Marked depletion in plasma and erythrocyte magnesium levels was particularly evident in diabetic patients with advanced retinopathy and poor diabetic control. While insulin has been shown to stimulate erythrocyte magnesium uptake, hyperglycemia per se suppressed intracellular magnesium in normal human red cells.
Aim of the study: To investigate the erythrocyte magnesium level in Iraqi type I and II diabetic patients, with specific emphasis on the effect of both, metabolic control and the type of antidiabetic treatments.
Methods: Sixty two diabetic patients (7 with type

Levels of Serum Lipid profile and Kidney Function Tests in Iraqi Hypertensive Patients: Duration Effect Study

Hypertension is one of the leading causes of the global burden of disease, which causes serious health problems. The aim of this study is to investigate the lipid profile levels in sera of Iraqi hypertensive patients by measuring Total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG) and low density lipoproteins (LDL) and kidney function levels by measuring uric acid, urea and creatinine. Seventy five individuals of Iraqi adults (Males) were divided into three groups: 25 hypertensive patients with duration of disease (1-10) year (group 1), 25 hypertensive patients with duration of disease (11-30) year (group 2) and 25 normal individuals as control group (group3). The findings indicate that serum (TC, TG and LDL) levels were significantly elevated (

Effect Of Some Enzymes Activity In Liver Diseases From Patients Of Salmonella Paratyphi A With Iraqi Woman.

This present study demonstrated that liver was involved in 14 %of typhoid patients manifesting with hepatomegaly. Elevation of serum enzymes in typhoid fever was presumably of a muscular origin, while elevation of liver enzyme was relatively less common. This study was performed on 30 female patients diagnosed by ultrasound (US) of abdomen, with paratyphoid A, ranged between (20-40) years compared with 30 healthy control .Patients volunteers were treated with appropriate antibiotics for 14 days and investigations were repeated 2-3 week after completion of treatment. Patients had clinical and biochemical evidence of hepatic dysfunction. The spectrum of hepatic involvement included hepatomegaly , jaundice, derangement of various hepatic func

Effect of Methotrexate Drug on Some Parameters of Kidney in Newborn mice

Thirty pregnant albino mice with average body weight of 25-30gm and 8-14 weeks old were used to investigate the toxicity of the oral administration of anticancer methotrexate on kidneys after birth. Pregnant were received (single dose) of drug at different days of gestation and were divided into three groups (10mice / group), control groups were administered distilled water, the two remaining groups were administered by 2.5 and 7.5 mg/kg body weight of methotrexate. The changes in kidneys of newborns revealed significant (p<0.05) decrease in kidneys weights, kidneys lengths, pelvises lengths, and glomeruli diameters. The increase in concentration of methotrexate has increasing significant effect on kidneys of embryo and newborns.

Genetic Algorithm-Based Anisotropic Diffusion Filter and Clustering Algorithms for Thyroid Tumor Detection

Medical imaging is a technique that has been used for diagnosis and treatment of a large number of diseases. Therefore it has become necessary to conduct a good image processing to extract the finest desired result and information. In this study, genetic algorithm (GA)-based clustering technique (K-means and Fuzzy C Means (FCM)) were used to segment thyroid Computed Tomography (CT) images to an extraction thyroid tumor. Traditional GA, K-means and FCM algorithms were applied separately on the original images and on the enhanced image with Anisotropic Diffusion Filter (ADF). The resulting cluster centers from K-means and FCM were used as the initial population in GA for the implementation of GAK-Mean and GAFCM. Jaccard index was used to s

Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of Two New Analogues of Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH)D-alanine8 and D-alanine

So far synthesis of Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH) analogues reported in the literature has clarified some aspects of structural activity of the naturally released GnRH. As a part of continuing efforts for further understanding of this relationship, the present investigation was undertaken which involved synthesis and biological evaluation of two GnRH analogues, firstly, by replacement of the amino acid L-Argenine in the 8th position at the backbone structure of the natural hormone by the amino acid D-Alanine; and secondly, by replacement of the amino acid L-Glycine in the 10th position by D-Alanine also at the backbone structure of the nature hormone, to obtain the following analogues respectively:
