Role of Inhibin B and Ratio of Luteinizing: Follicle-Stimulating Hormones in Phenotyping Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
...Show More Authors

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome is among the leading causes of fertility-related problems and menstrual irregularities in women of reproductive age. The granulosa cells of the developing pre-antral and antral follicles produce inhibin B, which triggers chemical responses in the ovaries. Inhibin B is most often observed in the follicular phase when levels peak early and then decline over time Objectives: This study was designed to investigate the role of serum inhibin B and the Luteinizing Hormone / Follicle Stimulating Hormone ratio in differentiation between the different phenotypes of polycystic ovary syndrome as well as to define the predominant PCOS phenotype.  Methods: This cross-sectional research was conducted in the Department of Biochemistry, College of Medicine, University of Baghdad from November 2023 to March 2024. The study included 111 women, ranging in age from 18-40 years. Among these, 91 women were diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) based on the 2003 Criteria for the Rotterdam Consensus, and the other 20 were healthy women.  Investigations included serum levels of inhibin B using the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay technique, follicle Stimulating Hormone, luteinizing Hormone and prolactin using Tosoh AIA-2000 Automated Immunoassay, to calculate the LH/FSH ratio. Results: phenotype A was observed to be the predominant PCOS phenotype, while phenotype B was the rare form. The mean ±SEM values of the inhibin B levels for the phenotypes B (26.07±0.23 pg/ml, p=<0.001), C (25.96±1.68 pg/ml, p=<0.0001), and D (37.51±2.31 pg/ml, p=<0.0001), respectively, were significantly lower than those of the control women (57.68±2.07 pg/ml). However, the mean ±SEM value of inhibin B of phenotype A (50.46±7.12 pg/ml) was comparable to that of controls. The mean value of the LH levels of phenotype A (7.12±0.76 µIU/ml) showed significantly higher numbers than those of the control women (4.59±0.38 µIU/ml, p=0.03). Furthermore, the mean values of the LH/FSH ratio were significantly elevated in phenotypes A (p=0.001) and B (p=0.04) as compared to the controls.  Conclusion: Serum Inhibin B level and LH/FSH ratio can be used to distinguish between the different phenotypes of PCOS.

Serum anti-Mullerian hormone level as a marker of polycystic ovarian syndrome in Iraqi women
...Show More Authors

Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome is one of the common gynaecological diseases encountered nowadays in the gynaecological clinic. Many criteria and diagnostic test had been evolved to be used with different classifications methods. Objectives: The present study aimed to measure the anti-mullerian hormone levels in serum of the women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and to test the possibility that if it can be used as a marker for diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome patients. Methods: A cross sectional study that had been conductedat Kamal AL-Samaraee Hospital, AL-Suwayrah Hospital andAl-Elwiya Maternity Teaching Hospital during the periodfrom July, 1st, 2013 – Jan. 1st, 2014. Where forty women withPolycystic ovarian syndrome (wit

Measurement of serum Superoxide dismutase levels in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome and chronic periodontitis
...Show More Authors

ABSTRACT Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most important reproductive and endocrine disorders in women at reproductive age. It's associated with metabolic disorder, obesity, insulin resistance and oxidative stress chronic periodontitis and PCOS both of them associated with low chronic grade of inflammation. The prevalence of periodontal disease seems to be higher in women with PCOS. Superoxide dismutase enzyme (SOD) is an important circulating marker and protecting enzyme helping the body tissues to get rid of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that damage the tissue. Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to measure and compare the levels of (SOD) among group of chronic periodontitis patients with PCOS, group

Detection of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Serum from Women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine disorder. To determine the metabolic disorders in women with PCOS, (25) women with PCOS ages (15 - 47) years have been investigated and compared with (20) healthy individuals. All the studied groups were carried out to measure fasting blood sugar, (anti-GAD Ab, anti β-islet cell Ab by IFAT) and measured insulin level by ELISA. There was significant elevation in the concentration of fasting blood sugar than in control groups (p ≤ 0.05) and there was negative results for anti-GAD Ab and anti β-islet cell Ab by IFAT test for serum of women with PCOS, while there was significant differences in the insulin level for women with PCOS compared with control groups (p ≤ 0.05),

Assessment of chemokines MIP-1α and MIP-1 βin Iraqi women with polycystic ovarian syndrome

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is reproductive, endocrine, and metabolic disorder affecting females. The pathology of PCOS is complicated and associated to chronic low-grade inflammation, this includes a disruption in pro-inflammatory factor production, leukocytosis, and endothelial cell dysfunction, also associated with high level of pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and leukocyte count. In addition, PCOS is characterized by hormonal and immunological dysfunction. Inflammation of the ovary affects ovulation and induces or aggravates systemic inflammation. Macrophage inflammatory protein-1 (MIP-1), a pro-inflammatory chemokine, is crucial in the recruitment of inflammatory and immunological cells to the place of inflammation

The Role of Hormones and Toxoplasma gondii Infection to Change the Secondary Sex Ratio
...Show More Authors

The secondary sex ratio (SSR) is affected by many factors, including the concentration of hormones and infection with some pathogens such as Toxoplasma gondii. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of hormone variability concentrations and toxoplasmosis infection on the secondary sex ratio. 150 pregnant women were selected, 60 infected with late toxoplasmosis (LT), 60 infected with early toxoplasmosis (ET) and 30 seronegative to toxoplasmosis. After tracking the birth outcomes of these women, we calculated SSR in each group. During the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, TSH, T4 and T3 concentrations were measured. The results of the three groups were compared. The results s
