Evaluation of PMMA joining to stainless steel 304 using pulsed Nd:YAG laser

This paper reports an experimental study of welding of dissimilar materials between transparent Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and stainless steel 304 sheets using a pulsed mode Nd:YAG laser. The process was carried out for two cases; laser transmission joining (LTJ) and conduction joining (CJ). The former is achieved when the joint is irradiated from the polymer side and the latter when the joint is irradiated from the opposite side (metal side). The light and process parameters represented by the peak power (Pp), pulse duration (τ), pulse repetition rate (PRR), scanning speed (ν) and pulse shape have a significant effect on the joint strength (Fb), joint bead width (b), joint quality and appearance. The optimum parameters were determined according to joint quality, joint strength and bead width. The optimum results for the joint strength and bead width for both LTJ and CJ are 925 N, 7.25 mm and 495 N, 8 mm respectively using a rectangular pulse shape (RC). Further modeling studies were carried out based on two methods; one factor at a time method (OFM) and surface response methodology (RSM) method. RSM was used to determine optimum parameters for the experimental data building mathematical models for correlating parameters and responses (Fb and b) as well as to investigate how different parameters interact with each other and their effect on the weld quality.

Finite element thermal analysis for PMMA/st.st.304 laser direct joining

This work is concerned with building a three-dimensional (3D) ab-initio models that is capable of predicting the thermal distribution of laser direct joining processes between Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and stainless steel 304(st.st.304). ANSYS® simulation based on finite element analysis (FEA) was implemented for materials joining in two modes; laser transmission joining (LTJ) and conduction joining (CJ). Hole Drilling of High Density Polyethylene using Nd:YAG Pulsed Laser

This paper presents the theoretical and experimental results of drilling high density
polyethylene sheet with thickness of 1 mm using millisecond Nd:YAG pulsed laser. Effects of laser
parameters including laser energy, pulse duration and peak power were investigated. To describe and
understand the mechanism of the drilling process Comsol multiphysics package version 4.3b was used to
simulate the process. Both of the computational and experimental results indicated that the drilling
process has been carried out successfully and there are two phases introduced in the drilling process,
vaporization and melting. Each portion of these phases depend on the laser parameters used in the

Laser Hole Drilling of Stainless Steel 321H and Steel 33 Using 3D CO2 Laser CNC Machine

In present work an investigation for precise hole drilling via continuous wave (CW) CO2 laser at 150 W maximum output power and wavelength 10.6 μm was achieved with the assistance of computerized numerical controlled (CNC) machine and assist gases. The drilling process was done for thin sheets (0.1 – 0.3 mm) of two types of metals; stainless steel (sst) 321H, steel 33 (st). Changing light and process parameters such as laser power, exposure time and gas pressure was important for getting the optimum results. The obtained results were supported with computational results using the COMSOL 3.5a software code.

Modeling of Bending Properties of Stainless Steel 304 Sheets Welded by Tungsten Inert Gas Welding Process

Optimization of Material Removal Rate and Temperature in Magnetic Abrasive Finishing Process for Stainless Steel 304
