Analysis the Seismic Activity in Iraq: Impacts on Foundation Selection and Mitigation Strategies
...Show More Authors
Abstract<p>Recently, Iraq has experienced more earthquakes, notice that its increased about 62% in 2024 in comparison with same period of 2023, the main aims of this study are to detect the causes and contributing factors of the earthquakes in Iraq. Natural disasters like earthquakes contributes to about 61 %. Also, they are responsible for 94% of all human deaths from natural disasters. The fundamental reasons of earthquakes occur in Iraq due to geological location, which lies on the boundary of the Arabian plate and the Iranian-Eurasian plate. There is much seismic activity in Iraq’s east and north because of the collision of the above plates. Another cause of earthquakes are faults and fractures in the earth. In addition, oil extraction and groundwater withdrawal on land also causes seismic activity in some places. Earthquakes can lead to both short and long-term risks, they can be classified into the several types as damage of structures and destruction of infrastructure like buildings, bridges, and highways can collapse, resulting in widespread damage and loss of life. Also, essential infrastructure such as power lines, water pipes, and communication lines can be cut with human fatalities and injuries. Considering the sudden increase in seismic activity in Iraq during 2024, there is a need to implement active measures to avert or mitigate earthquake hazards via using suitable foundation. This can be achieved by adopting scientific engineering, and administrative measures such as enhancing monitoring and early warning systems, improved earthquake-resilient infrastructure, community awareness and training and sustainable urban planning.</p>

Predicting of heavy metals in some areas of Iraq using spectral analysis techniques
...Show More Authors
Abstract<p>Soil that has been contaminated by heavy metals is a serious environmental problem. A different approach for forecasting a variety of soil physical parameters is reflected spectroscopy is a low-cost, quick, and repeatable analytical method. The objectives of this paper are to predict heavy metal (Ti, Cr, Sr, Fe, Zn, Cu and Pb) soil contamination in central and southern Iraq using spectroscopy data. An XRF was used to quantify the levels of heavy metals in a total of 53 soil samples from Baghdad and ThiQar, and a spectrogram was used to examine how well spectral data might predict the presence of heavy metals metals. The partial least squares regression PLSR models performed well in pr</p> ... Show More

Remote sensing analysis: A decade of water surface changes in Lake Hamrin, Iraq
...Show More Authors

The study of Lake Hamrin is of enormous importance in understanding changes in water levels and their impact on the local environment. It helps to clarify the role of climatic and human factors in the decline of its water resources from 2013 to 2023 in order to ensure sustainable solutions. Satellite imagery from Landsat 8 is used, and processing is performed using ArcGIS Pro and ENVI. The normalized vegetation index (NDVI) is applied to show the changes in the vegetation cover and reveal the amount of change in the surface water area of the lake. It is noted that the water area changes in one year as it increases in the rainy season and decreases in the summer, and it also varies from one year to another with the difference in the amount o

Cooperative decision-making on fiscal and monetary policy in Iraq using the prisoner’s dilemma
...Show More Authors

This paper investigates the interaction between fiscal and monetary policy in Iraq after 2003 using the prisoner’s dilemma. The paper aims to determine the best form of coordination between these policies to achieve their goals; payoff matrix for both policies was constructed. To achieve the purpose, the quantitative approach was applied using several methods, including regression, building payoff matrices and decision analysis using a number of software. The results of the monetary policy payment function show that inflation rate has an inverse relationship with the auctions of selling foreign currency and a positive relationship with the government’s activity, while the fiscal policy function shows that real growth is positively

Green Chemistry Strategies to Enhance the Thermal Stability of PVC: A State-of-the-Art Overview on Plant Oil-Derived Stabilizers
...Show More Authors

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) finds use in various industries due to its versatility but is not thermostable, serving as a barrier to causing degradation and release of hydrochloric acid (HCl) under heat stress conditions. Lead and organotin compounds have traditionally been used for stabilizer purpose to discourage such degradation but pose serious ecological as well as health risks. As a counter measure, bio-based stabilizers from plant oils have become popular as a green and sustainable alternative. This review looks back at recent developments in plant oil-based stabilizers for PVC, focusing on the mechanisms of stabilization, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. We review plant oils such as tung oil, castor oil, and soybean oil,
