Evaluation of the effect of Funneliformis mosseae on enhancing the tolerance of Capsicum annuum L. to cadmium and lead stress Sarah
...Show More Authors

Objective Heavy metal pollution harms plants, so using biological methods to mitigate it is important. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi have been known to enhance mineral nutrition to plants, particularly uptake of comparatively immobile nutrients like phosphorus (P), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu), and increase nitrogen uptake and water use efficiency. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Funneliformis mosseae inoculation in enhancing the growth and tolerance of Capsicum annuum L. under cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) stress conditions.Materials and methods The experiment was conducted over a period of 160 days using areplicated experimental design to evaluate the effects of Funneliformis mosseae under lead and cadmium stress. A pot experiment was conducted under the greenhouse conditions at the University of Baghdad. The experiment utilized a completely randomized design (CRD) featuring six replicates for each treatment. These treatment groups were established to assess the growth of Capsicum annuum plants in clay soil. Plant growth was assessed by measuring fresh and dry weights and stem and root while Pb and Cd concentrations were determined in root tissues and soil using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). The statistical analysis of the experimental data was performed using the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) software (Version 9.4) Results Statistical analysis using two-way ANOVA indicated significant differences (P ≤ 0.05) among the experimental treatments. Inoculation with Funneliformis mosseae improved the growth of hot pepper plants, as reflected by higher fresh and dry biomass together with increased shoot and root lengths under lead and cadmium stress. Furthermore, AAS analysis revealed lower Pb and Cd concentrations in the roots of mycorrhiza-inoculated plants, suggesting that mycorrhizal inoculation effectively reduced heavy metal stress. Conclusion This study provides evidence that mycorrhizal inoculation can be integrated into sustainable management strategies for crops grown in heavy metal-contaminated soils. The use of Funneliformis mosseae offers a practical biological approach to improving plant performance while minimizing the impact of lead and cadmium on agricultural systems

EVALUATION OF WATER STRESS EFFECT ON SOME CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF SEVERAL SUNFLOWER VARIETIES CALLUS TREATED WITH ULTRAVIOLET
...Show More Authors

The study was carried out in plant tissue culture laboratory, University of Baghdad during the period 2017-2019, as factorial experiment in complete randomized design, to study the effect of PEG at (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8%) on physiological and chemical changes in callus of three sunflower (Ishaqi 1, Aqmar and Al-haga) induced by the cultivation of the young stem in vitro under water stress. The content of callus cells of SOD, POD, CAT and APX enzymes as well as content of hydrogen peroxide were determined as indicators to determine the effect of PEG in callus tissue cells cultivated on medium equipped with the PEG concentrations. The results showed that cultivars were differs significantly and Al-hajavariety was superior in increasing SOD to 24.

Abstract
<title>Background:

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a parasitic disease that affects public health. It is described by weight reduction, irregular fever bouts, anemia, and amplification of the spleen and liver.

Materials and Methods:

Three concentrations (15.6, 31.2, and 62.5 μg/mL) were used to find the potency of an aqueous extract ofChara vulgarisalgae in the treatment of VL. A cytotoxicity assay was performed to show the cytotoxic effect of this extract on human cells. In Vitro Evaluation of the Activity of Punica granatum L. Aqueous and Methanol Extracts on the Trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica
...Show More Authors

Background: Entamoeba histolytica is the causative agent of amoebic dysentery and hepatic abscesses. Despite the efficacy of metronidazole in alleviating infectious diseases, the global dissemination of drug-resistant parasites raises the possibility that Punica granatum could serve as an effective natural alternative treatment. Objective: To evaluate the effect of P. granatum methanolic and aqueous extracts of various parts against E. histolytica trophozoites in an in vitro setting. Methods: Various concentrations (0.14, 0.7, 1.4, and 2.8 mg/ml) of P. granatum extracts of the flowers, leafs, peels, and seeds were chosen for this purpose. A culture medium containing 0.05x106/ml E. histolytica trophozoites was treated with different

Enhancing air pollution exposure tolerance of indoor ornamental plants using glycine and yeast extracts as a bioremediation strategy
...Show More Authors

Indoor air pollution is a critical environmental challenge with negative impacts on human health, especially in urban and enclosed settings. This study aimed to evaluate the tolerance of three indoor ornamental plants—Epipremnum aureum, Sansevieria trifasciata, and Syngonium podophyllum Schott—against pollutants generated by cigarette smoke and kerosene combustion. Plants were exposed under controlled indoor conditions, while particulate matter (PM₁. ₀, PM₂. ₅, PM₁₀), total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), and carbon dioxide (CO₂) were measured before, during, and after exposure. Plant tolerance was assessed using the Air Pollution Tolerance Index (APTI), calculated from total chlorophyll content, leaf extract pH, ascor

Overexpression of a tobacco osmotin gene in carrot (Daucus carota L.) enhances drought tolerance
...Show More Authors

Osmotin and osmotin-like proteins belong to the PR-5 pathogenesis-related group of proteins and are induced in response to various types of biotic and abiotic stresses in several plant species. Carrot was transformed with a tobacco osmotin gene that encodes a protein lacking the vacuolar-sorting motif that is composed of a 20-amino-acid sequence at the C-terminal end, under the control of the cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter, using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. Transgene integration and expression were confirmed by Southern and western blot analyses, and three selected transgenic lines were evaluated for their ability to tolerate drought stress. Under drought stress conditions, all transformants exhibited slower rates of wilti
