Determination of Radioactivity Levels in Some Rice Samples available in the Iraqi Markets Using the system of High-purity Germanium

Abstract<p>This study aimed to determine the radioactivity and radiation hazard indicators of rice samples potentially for human consumption. Gamma spectroscopy was used to calculate the specific activity of natural and artificial radionuclides (<sup>238</sup>U, <sup>232</sup>Th, <sup>40</sup>K, and <sup>137</sup>Cs) in local and imported rice samples collected from local markets in Baghdad Governorate, Iraq, in addition to various radiological hazard indices. The radionuclide concentrations in the samples varied from 2.123 ± 1.457 Bq/kg to 13.032 ± 3.610 Bq/kg for <sup>238</sup>U, 2.906 ± 1.705 Bq/kg to 17.290 ± 4.158 Bq/kg for <sup>232</sup>Th, 55.161 ± 7.427 Bq/kg to 155.897 ± 12.486 Bq/kg for <sup>40</sup>K, and 0.840 ± 0.916 Bq/kg to 5.473 ± 2.339 Bq/kg for <sup>137</sup>Cs. The average results for the radiological hazard indices were 24.292 ± 4.855 Bq/kg, 11.579 nGy/h, 0.378 nGy/h, 0.057 mSv/y, 0.014 mSv/y, 0.181, 0.082, and 0.066 for Raeq, D<sub>γ</sub>, D<sub>γ</sub> for <sub>137</sub>Cs, AEDE<sub>in</sub>, AEDE<sub>out</sub>, I<sub>γ</sub>, H<sub>in</sub>, and H<sub>ex</sub>, respectively. The values obtained from the current study indicate that the concentrations of radionuclides and the hazard indices in the rice samples studied are less than globally permissible limits. Therefore, rice consumption is safe from a radiological perspective and does not threaten human health.</p>

In this research, a selection of some mineral water was selected on the basis of being the most marketed by the owners of shops in Najaf province, with six types, where daily samples of this water were taken by 50 ml for two months from (1/11/2018 -1/1/2019). The following ions concentrations were measured (Br-, Cl-, F-, NO3-, SO42-, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+), pH and the electrical conductivity were measured and the results were compared with the allowable rates according to the international organizations. It was noted that they conform to international and Iraqi standards.

High performance liquid chromatographic determination of aflatoxins in chilli, peanut and rice using silica based monolithic column

The sample was extracted using acetonitrile:water (90:10, v/v%) and then purified by using ISOLUTE multimode solid phase extraction. After the pre-column derivatisation, the analytes were separated within 3.7 min using Chromolith performance RP-18e (100–4.6 mm) monolithic column. Flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer (FAAS) was used in this study to determine the concentrations of heavy metals such as Ca, Fe, Mn, Cd, Co, Cr, Ni, Cu, Pb and Zn in some food additives of Iraq. The order of metal contents in food additives was found to be Ca ˃ Mn ˃ Fe ˃ Cu ˃ Zn ˃ Pb ˃ Cr ˃ Ni ˃ Co ˃ Cd. The concentration level of each metal was compared with that recommended by food agriculture organisation (FAO) and world health organisation (WHO).
