Background: Alopecia areata(AA) is a common autoimmune disease that causes hair loss without scarring. It occurs as a result of T-helper 1 (Th1) and Th17 cells attacking the anagen hair follicles. Genetic factors play a role in the occurrence of infection, which stimulates the production of pro and anti-inflammatory interleukins. Polymorphisms of IL-37 play a role in autoimmune diseases. However, IL37 single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNP) have not been identified in patients with AA. Therefore, this study aimed to reveal the IL37 gene SNP and its relationship to AA. Methods: Genotyping of IL-37 gene single nucleotide polymorphisms SNPs were detected using sequence-specific primer-polymerase chain reaction (SSP-PCR) method was done following the protocol of DNA Extraction kit and PCR PreMix SNP Genotyping Assays in 51 (32 males & 19 females at age mean 27.90±1.66 years) patients with AA and 50 (21 males & 29 females at age mean30.64±2.08years ) healthy individuals. Results: The results of the present study showed a significant increase in the mean level of IL-37 in the serum of patients with AA compared to healthy subjects (184.18±69.45 vs.153.28±48.17) pg/ml. This increase did not constitute a significant difference at a probability level less than. In addition, genotypes of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of IL-37 gene were rs3811045 (5756 T>C) and rs3811046 (5831 G>T) that result in substitution and inversion mutations, and thus cause a change in the type of amino acid. The CC and allele C and TC of rs3811045 were risk factors for AA due to a significantly higher odd ration (OR) value and a significantly increased frequency percentage in patients group compared to a healthy control group (37.50 vs 25.58 OR: 1.75 p = 0.264, 95% CI = 0.72–4.25, 66.0 vs 86.0 OR: 1.78 p = 0.068, 95% CI = 0.98–3.23; 56.25 vs 55.81 OR: 1.02 p = 1.0 95% CI = 0.45–2.31 respectively). Also the results of rs3811046 recorded that the TT and allele T frequency percentages were significant increase in patients group (39.58 vs 25.58 OR: 1.91 P = 0.184, 95% CI = 0.79-4.63, 66.0 vs. 52.0 OR: 1.74, P =0.072,95%CI= 0.96–3.15) respectively, which was a risk factor for infection. This study is the first of its kind to show the relationship of IL-37 level and genetic single nucleotide polymorphisms with AA. Conclusions The present study's results can conclude that the TC, CC and the C allele of IL-37 SNP rs3811045 and TT genotypes and the T allele of IL-37 SNP rs3811046 have a role in the risk of developing AA. It is recommended to conduct several genetic studies of other interleukin genes and to ascertain their relationship to AA. © 2023, Journal of Biomechanical Science and Engineering.
Keloids are prevalent fibro-proliferative tumors, and treating them is still a challenge although intralesional injections of triamcinolone acetonide (TAC) are effective, they have frequently linked adverse effects. Pentoxifylline (PTX) is an anti-fibrotic and anti-inflammatory, and vasodilator. It has not yet been tested for intralesional injection in keloids. The aim of the study is to study the efficacy of intralesional pentoxifylline versus triamcinolone acetonide in keloid scars of 40 patients. In this study, 40 patients with keloid scars regardless of the cause of keloid born, 20 patients have injected with intralesional triamcinolone acetonide, and 20 patients with intralesional pentoxifylline every two weeks until the lesi

Heart failure patients have a higher incidence of renal function test abnormalities than individuals who do not have heart failure disease. Fifty subjects of adults (male) were divided in to two groups, 25 subjects (healthy) as control (group1) and 25 subjects with heart failure (group 2). Our results indicate that serum uric acid, urea, and creatinine values were significantly elevated (P≤0.05) in patients group (2) compared with healthy group (1). The results also showed, the effect of age categories on uric acid blood urea nitrogen and creatinine values (P≤0.05) and there were no si

The present study conducted 60 acromegalic patients (30 diabetes & 30 non diabetes) attending National Diabetes Center / AL-Mustansiriya University/Baghdad, and 30 healthy individuals as a control group aged (35-60) years. All patients were administrated Sandostatin drug, and they were diagnosed by physician in the hospital.FBG, GH, IGF-1, OST, BALP, and LOX were determined in all groups. The results showed a highly significant rise in all parameters (GH, IGF-1, FBG, OST, BALP, and LOX values in serum of all patients when compared with n

Trace element deficiency or excess is implicated in the development or progression of some cancers like colorectal cancer. The aim of the present study was to compare the serum copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) concentrations in patients with colorectal cancer from Iraqi male patient with those of healthy subjects. During the period of March 2015 until august 2015, a total of 25 patients with metastatic colon cancer and 20 healthy volunteers were enrolled from the Al-Kadhimia Teaching Hospital after the diagnosis using a histopathological examination for the malignant tumor; their age was between (38-60) years. MCV was once a disease primarily of children, but it has evolved to become a sexually transmitted disease in adults. It is believed to be a member of the pox virus family. In addition to the classic presentation of the disease; it can also come in different clinical forms that simulate large number of dermatolological disease.
Objective: To study different clinical forms of Molluscum contagiosum presentation in different age groups of Iraqi patients.
Method:This clinical descriptive study was performed in the outpatient department of
Abstract Background Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is a widely used test for glycemic control. It is done for chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Renal disease is accompanied by thyroid abnormalities, which affect HbA1c, especially in those taking erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs). We aimed to find the effect of thyroid dysfunction on HbA1c in hemodialysis patients taking ESAs and those who do not. Materials and Method Fifty six patients were included in this study, which was done between September 2017 and June 2018, in Baghdad Teaching Hospital. Thyroid stimulating hormone, free T3, free T4 and HbA1c measurements were done. The patients were divided into 2 groups; those who took ESAs and those who did not, then they were subdivided into

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is one type of leukemia that arises from lymphocytes' progenitor cell in the Bone marrow, it affects individuals over the age of 50 years in both genders. In Iraq, leukemia affected 1532 (847 males and 683 females) according to the latest announced statistics of the Iraqi Cancer Registry Center in 2012. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia may occur due to several genetic causes, such as chromosomal aberrations and gene mutations, or exposure to carcinogens and mutagens (radiation, chemicals, and oncogenic viruses). The most famous virus is the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which is a gamma herpesvirus that infects more than 90% of individuals.
