Morphodynamics, landform development and origin of the Ga’ara depression, Western Desert of Iraq

This work deals with the study of the morphodynamics, history of development of landforms and the origin of the Ga’ara depression. The depression is a suboval erosional topographic feature extending in E-Wdirection and located about 50 km north of Rutba Town, at the Western Desert of Iraq. The area is characterized by fresh and clean surfaces, scarcity of vegetation, abundance of rills, intense drainage and immature soil. These clues indicate that the erosion in the study area is effective. Four types of erosion features are recognized in this area namely sheet, rill, badland and wind erosion. The extent of the wind erosion depends on its position in relation to the prevailing wind direction. Water, wind and gravity are the main agents of erosion although the former seems more effective. In general, the valleys are dense in the hard rocks which indicate intensive erosion. Two types of drainage pattern can be distinguished in the study area, a dendritic pattern, especially at the exposure area of the Mulussa dolostone, and a centripetal pattern at the central part of the depression at the confluence of the main wadis. The valleys are V-shaped in their upper reaches and gradually change to flat-bottom shallow valleys in their lower reaches. Two major types of mass wasting are recognized, namely, rock fall and slump. Rock fall is the most common process whereby most of the talus accumulates at the base of the cliff. Slump is frequent at the south and southwestern rims of the depression. The slope surfaces are generally composite of the type free-face concave pediment. The depression is asymmetrical having steeper slopes in the south and thewestwhereas the northern and eastern scarps are wider and gentler, respectively. History of landform development is investigated in the Ga’ara area. Seven episodes are distinguished according to emergence and paleoclimatic conditions. The landforms of the study area were formed and further developed during the emergence episodes. The history of the development of the Ga’ara depression is studied too.

Assessment of vegetable cover in south Iraq by remote sensing methods

The vegetable cover plays an important role in the environment and Earth resource sciences. In south Iraq, the region is classified as arid or semiarid area due to the low precipitations and high temperature among the year. In this paper, the Landat-8 satellite imagery will be used to study and estimate the vegetable area in south Iraq. For this purpose many vegetation indices will be examined to estimate and extract the area of vegetation contain in and image. Also, the weathering parameters must be investigated to find the relationship between these parameters and the arability of vegetation cover crowing in the specific area. The remote sensing packages and Matlab written subroutines may be use to evaluate the results.

HARLIN model for prediction of solar radiation for Baghdad city, Iraq

In this study a combination of two basics known methods used to daily prediction of solar insolation in Baghdad city, Iraq, for the first time, the harmonic and the classical linear regression analyses, thus it is called HARLIN model. The resulted prediction data compared with basics data for Baghdad city for two years (2010-2011), where the model showed a great success application in the accurate results, compared with the linear famous and well known model which is used the classical linear Angstrom equations with various formulations in many previous studies.

Calcareous Nannofossils Biostratigraphy of Tanjero Formation at Azmer anticline Northern Iraq

Seventy three species of calcareous nannofossils are recorded from the studied section of Tanjero Formation at Azmer anticline, Sulimaniya, Northern Iraq. The studied section reveals four  biozones arranged in an ascending order  from oldest to youngest as follows; Tranolithus phacelosus Interval Biozone (CC23) Part, Rienhardtites lives Interval  Biozone (CC24), Arkhangelskilla cymbiformis Interval Biozone (CC25), and Nephrolithus frequens Rang Biozone (CC26) Part. These biozones are correlated with other calcareous nannofossil biozones of both local and regional sections, leading to conclude a possible age of  Late Campanian- Maastrichtian.

Reservoir units of Mishrif Formation in Majnoon Oil field, Southern Iraq

The reservoir units of Mishrif Formation in Majnoon oil field were studied by using available wireline logs (gamma ray, porosity and resistivity) and facies that derived from core and cutting samples for three wells including Mj-1, Mj-15, and Mj-20.
