Effects of Avena sativa and Glycyrrhiza glabra Leaves Extracts on Immune Responses in Serum Cytokine and Liver Enzyme Levels in NIH Mice
...Show More Authors

In addition to their high quantities of active chemicals, medicinal plants are well-known for their pharmacological qualities, which include immunological modulation. T Consequently, this study aimed to examine the effects of Avena sativa and Glycyrrhiza glabra leaf extracts on immunological responses as measured by blood cytokine and liver enzyme levels. The phytochemical analysis of Avena sativa crude leaf extracts revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, phenolic compounds, and saponins but the absence of resins and violet oils. On the other hand, violet oils, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and glycosides were detected in significant concentration in Glycyrrhiza glabra ethanolic extract, although resins and phenolic compounds were not present. Fifty male NIH mice were randomly divided into five groups: Except for the control group, all animals were given subcutaneously and orally with extracts (50 mg/kg) for 14 days prior to LPS-induced (1 mg/kg body weight) liver injury. LPS-induced liver damage was induced on day 15, and mice were starved.Group 1 was injected subcutaneously with normal saline as a control. Group 2 received an injection of 100 l of crude oat extract subcutaneously. Group 3 was administered 100 l (50 mg/kg) of crude Oat extract orally. Group 4: administered 100 l (50 mg/kg) of crude Licorice extract subcutaneously. Group 5 ingested 100 l (50 mg/kg) of crude Licorice extract orally. IL-4 levels were significantly elevated (P 0.05) in the subcutaneously and orally treated groups compared to the control group (12.3 0.23 pg/ml). IL-6 was significantly elevated (P<0.05) in mice given subcutaneously or orally with Avena sativa or Glycyrrhiza glabra extracts compared to mice treated subcutaneously or orally with a control substance (44 0.57 pg/ml). The concentration of TNF- was significantly elevated (P<0.05) in subcutaneous and oral treated groups (283.6 1.7 and 280.6 12.2; 233.9 0.6 and 241.2 2.8) compared with the control group (130 0.42) pg/ml. When mice were exposed to LPS-containing extracts, both GOT, and GPT levels fell relative to the control group.

The protective role of nicardipine in dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis in mice: Modulating inflammation and apoptosis
...Show More Authors

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease associated with persistent inflammation, oxidative stress, and epithelial apoptosis. Nicardipine, a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker, exhibits anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic properties, but its therapeutic potential in UC remains unclear. This study evaluated the effects of nicardipine on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice, focusing on inflammatory, oxidative, and apoptotic pathways. Fifty BALB/c mice were assigned to five groups (n = 10): control, DSS, nicardipine 12 mg/kg, nicardipine 24 mg/kg, and 5-aminosalicylate (ASA) 75 mg/kg. Treatments were administered for 3 days before and 10 days during DSS exposure. Disease severity was assessed by bo

Bacterial secretions in growth medium stimulate the mouse respiratory innate immune response
...Show More Authors

ntroduction. Finding a safe innate immune response stimulator is one of the greatest challenges facing immunologists and vaccine manufacturers. Gap statement. The role of sterile bacterial secretions (SBSs) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in stimulating the innate immune response was not investigated previously. Aim. The comparative effect of SBSs and bacterial cells of P. aeruginosa isolates isolated from freshwater (PAE) and infected wounds (PAC) on the respiratory tract innate immune response. Methodology. Four test mice groups were instilled intranasally (i.n.) with 106 c.f.u of PAC, 106 c.f.u of PAE, SBS of PAC, and SBS of PAE. Two control groups were given i.n. either LB broth or PBS. Time-course changes in IL-1 beta mRNA, TNF-alpha mRNA, I

The study was carried out to detection of H.pylori in (200) patients who attended two teaching hospitals in Baghdad. The diagnosis done by Immunochromatography methods. Stools and blood samples was taken from each patient as well as other (30) healthy control matching in their age. The study included detection the Levels of Interleukin-40 and CRP in sera of patients and control. The result indicated presence of H pylori antigen in 115 cases 59 cases of males and 51 of females, Also, the result indicated increasing levels of IL-40, cholesterol, Triglycerides, Low density lipoprotein, Very Low density lipoprotein increased significantly while the level of High density lipoprotein decreased in patients sera in comparison with healthy c

Serum Vitamin and Mineral Profiles in Patients with Hypothyroidism-Associated Hair Loss
...Show More Authors

Background: Hair loss is a frequent and distressing manifestation among patients with hypothyroidism. In addition to thyroid hormone imbalance, deficiencies in vitamins and minerals may contribute to impaired hair follicle function. Objective: This study aimed to assess serum vitamin and mineral profiles in patients with hypothyroidism-associated hair loss and to explore their relationship with thyroid hormone status. Methods: the study was conducted on a total of 90 participants, including 65 patients diagnosed with hypothyroidism-associated hair loss, 25 control - and sex-matched apparently healthy control subjects, groups aged 30 and over. Serum levels of vitamin D3, vitamin B12, zinc, iron, ferritin, calcium, magnesium, th

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common degenerative joint disorder that ultimately results in the progressive destruction of articular cartilage. The occurrence of knee osteoarthritis (OA) increases with obesity and is more common in women compared with men. Thirty patients (20 females, 10 males) clinically diagnosed with knee OA admitted to Baghdad teaching hospital between January 2015-June 2015. Patients between 35-70 year of age and 30 healthy subject (20 females, 10 males) ages matched. The results showed that increased body mass index (BMI) is a well-recognized risk factor for knee osteoarthritis, and the effect of obesity is a stronger predictor of developing knee OA symptoms in women than men. There was also a significant diffe
