—Breast cancer (BC) remains a health challenge in Iraq, with patients presenting at younger ages and advanced stages. While gene fusions, particularly ETV6-NTRK3, are established oncogenic drivers in subtypes like secretory breast carcinoma (SBC), their prevalence within the Iraqi population remains unexplored. This study aimed to detect the ETV6-NTRK3 gene fusion in Iraqi patients with BC to define its diagnostic specificity and clinicopathological correlates. Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue blocks from 60 women (aged 20–50 years) diagnosed with BC were collected. Samples were classified into three equal groups: SBC, Invasive Carcinoma of no special type, and invasive lobular carcinoma (n = 20 for each). The ETV6-NTRK3 fusion was detected using fluorescence in situ hybridization with a dual-color break-apart probe. The ETV6-NTRK3 fusion was detected exclusively in the SBC, with a prevalence of 100% (19/19 successfully scored cases), while it was absent in all scored cases of other groups, yielding a positive predictive value of 100% and a negative predictive value of 100%. Fusion-positive SBC tumors were associated with clinicopathological features: they were exclusively low to intermediate histological grade (Grades I-II) and predominantly presented at early pathological stages (Stage I-II: 84.2%). The fusion-positive cases were 93 times more likely to present with an early stage of disease compared with fusion-negative cases (odds ratio: 93.33; 95% confidence interval: 16.15–539.19). In conclusion, the ETV6-NTRK3 fusion may be a definitive molecular hallmark of SBC in Iraqi patients, and could demonstrate perfect diagnostic specificity and association with a less aggressive phenotype.
Background: Cardiomyopathy (CM) is a cardiac muscle disorder that can lead to heart failure (HF). It has several phenotypes, including dilated, hypertrophic, and restricted. Pro-inflammatory cytokines play a crucial part in the development and advancement of CM. Objective: This study aimed to measure the concentration of certain cytokines [Interleukin- 1β (IL-1β), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), and Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF-α)] in the serum of Iraqi patients with CM. Materials and Methods: Sixty CM patients and 30 healthy individuals with age ranged from 40 to 70 years old were enrolled in this study through their presence at Iraqi Center for Heart Diseases, Ghazy Al-Hariri Hospital for Surgical Specialties in the Medical City in Baghdad. Globally, the prevalence of UC, a chronic illness that affects the large intestine, is rising. Fifty adherent invasive Escherichia coli (AIEC) isolates were identified from ulcerative colitis biopsy samples originating from the Gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and Hepatology teaching hospitals/medical city in Baghdad City. The test’s results demonstrated that the AIEC isolates had a high level of resistance to the majority of the an-tibiotics under investigation. The current study aimed to evaluate oxytocin (OT), prolactin (PRL), cortisol and insulin growth factor-2 (IGF-2) levels as physiological biomarkers; programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1), programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1),interleukin-6 (IL-6) as immunological biomarkers, and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs; rs53576 and rs2254298) of oxytocin receptor gene OXTR as molecular factors in samples of Iraqi women undergoing caesarean section (CS) and normal delivery (ND). Blood samples were collected from 96 pregnant women at term with ages ranging between 16-43 years. Regarding

There have been conflicting reports concerning GST polymorphisms as risk factors in the development of lung cancer. No studies focused on Arab populations exposed to Waterpipe (WP) tobacco smoke have been undertaken. Here Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and gene sequenc- ing were applied to analyze allelic variations in GSTP1-rs1695 and -rs1138272 amongst 123 lung cancer patients and 129 controls. The data suggest that WP smoking raised the risk of lung cancer more than three-fold (OR 3.6; 95% CI 2.1–6.0; p < 0.0001). However, there was no s

Autoimmune hyperthyroidism is seen as a thyroid gland problem. Pro-inflammatory cytokines are crucial for the growth and development of hyperthyroidism, it was shown that the level of several pro-inflammatory cytokines were higher in the hyperthyroidism patients. Objective: This work was aimed to assessment the concentration of certain cytokine in hyperthyroid patients. Materials and Methods: Sixty hyperthyroidism patients and 30 healthy individuals with age range from (30-65) years old were enrolled in this study through their presence at the National Center for Diabetes Treatment and Research in Bag

The aim of this article was to investigate the association of TMPRSS2 polymorphism (rs12329760 (C\T)) with prostate cancer (PCa) in sample of Iraqi patients. One hundred and two individuals were involved in this study for the period from February – 2019 to February – 2020. The sample type was formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue samples (FFPE), which involved fifty-six samples of pre-diagnosed patients with prostate cancer, aged between 48 and 86 years, and forty-six samples were found to be controls (healthy group) dependent on Prostate Gland integrity, which is the same age as in a group o

Some cytokines stimulate the immune system and others slow it down. Interleukins (ILs) can be divided into several families with more than 40 subfamily members. They can interact with a variety of cells that alter the immune system and act on a wide range of cancers. In the past several years, ILs have attracted substantial attention because of their distinct roles in CRC that provide a new and promising strategy for CRC. In general, ILs facilitate CRC by promoting tumorigenesis, tumour growth, angiogenesis, and cancer cell invasion and metastasis and inhibit CRC via complex pathways.
