Serum CXCL 9 as a Potential Biomarker for Patients with Ulcerative Colitis
...Show More Authors

Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory bowel disease restricted to the large intestine, characterized by superficial ulceration. It is a progressive and chronic disease requiring long-term treatment. Although its etiology remains unknown, it is suggested that environmental factors influence genetically susceptible individuals, leading to the onset of the disease. (C-X-C) ligand 9 is a chemokine that belongs to the CXC chemokine family, it plays a role in the differentiation of immune cells such as cytotoxic lymphocytes, natural killer T cells, and macrophages. Its interaction with its corresponding receptor CXCR3 which is expressed by a variety of cells such as effector T cells, CD8+ cytotoxic T cells, and macrophage, leads to stimulation of the production of IFN-γ and TNF-α and in turn, stimulates the production of Th1 chemokines which results in promoting the inflammation. Objectives: To assess the significance of serum chemokine (C-X-C) ligand 9 as a potential marker for identifying ulcerative colitis in adults with inflammatory bowel disease. Patients and Methods:  This is a case-control study that included 50 patients diagnosed with UC, aged between 18 and 75 years, compared to 50 healthy controls, aged between 18 and 60 years. The study was conducted between November 2022 and March 2023, at the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Teaching Hospital at the Medical City Complex in Baghdad. The serum samples were analyzed using the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) technique. Results: The mean ± SD in pg/ml of serum CXCL9 in patient group was 26.9 ± 9.05 and in control group was 6.4 ± 2.37 (p< 0.0001) which indicates a highly significant difference. Conclusion: CXCL 9 may be employed as a biomarker for identifying ulcerative colitis and it can be used as a tool for measuring disease activity, in addition to the possibility of being a potential therapeutic target.

Oral Candida flora in a group of Jordanian patients with β-thalassemia major
...Show More Authors

Objective Thalassemic patients present with multiple immune abnormalities that may predispose them to oral Candida, however this has not been investigated. The aim of this study was to assess oral candidal colonization in a group of patients with β-thalassemia major both qualitatively and quantitatively. Study design The oral mycologic flora of 50 β-thalassemia major patients and 50 age- and sex-matched control subjects was assessed using the concentrated oral rinse technique. Candida species were identified using the germ tube test and the Vitek yeast identification system. Results Oral Candida was isolated from 37 patients (74%) and 28 healthy subjects (56%; P = .04). The mean candidal count was significantly higher in thalassemic patie

BC2N nanotube as a promising anode for rechargeable calcium ion batteries
...Show More Authors

Because of cost-effective production and abundant resources of calcium, Ca-ion batteries (CIBs) are an appropriate option to alternate Li-ion batteries (LIBs). A new category of anode materials for CIBs has emerged since the successful synthesis of carbon nanotubes, which are B and N doped derivatives of it. For high-performance CIBs, BC2N nanotube (BC2NNT) has been studied as promising anode materials. In order to comprehend electrochemical attributes, cycling stability, and adsorption behavior of BC2NNT, first-principles computations have been executed. Based on nuclear magnetic resonance computations, two types of hexagonal rings (B2C2N2 (I) and BC4N (II)) were specified that are non-aromatic. Ca has adsorption on B2C2N2 and BC4N with ad

Asthma as a risk factor for The progression of COVID-19
...Show More Authors

Background: Asthma is one of the most common chronic respiratory diseases in the world, standing for the most frequent cause for hospitalization and emergency cases. Respiratory viruses are the most triggering cause. Aim: To assess the role of viral infections, especially COVID-19, in the pathogenesis of asthma initiation and exacerbations. Method: Electronic search was done for the manuscripts focusing on asthma as a risk factor for complications after COVID-19 infection. The outcomes were titles, materials, methods and classified studies related or not related to the review study. Three hundred publications were identified and only ten studies were selected for analysis. Seven studies were review, one retrospective, one longitudin

Data-Driven Approach for Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language: Eygpt

Corpus linguistics is a methodology in studying language through corpus-based research. It differs from a traditional approach in studying a language (prescriptive approach) in its insistence on the systematic study of authentic examples of language in use (descriptive approach).A “corpus” is a large body of machine-readable structurally collected naturally occurring linguistic data, either written texts or a transcription of recorded speech, which can be used as a starting-point of linguistic description or as a means of verifying hypotheses about a language.  In the past decade, interest has grown tremendously in the use of language corpora for language education. The ways in which corpora have been employed in language pedago

GIS as A Tool for Expansive Soil Detection at Sulaymaniyah City
...Show More Authors

Geotechnical engineering like any other engineering field has to develop and cope with new technologies. This article intends to investigate the spatial relationships between soil’s liquid limit (LL), plasticity index (PI) and Liquidity index (LI) for particular zones of Sulaymaniyah City. The main objective is to study the ability to produce digital soil maps for the study area and determine regions of high expansive soil. Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) interpolation tool within the GIS (Geographic Information System) program was used to produce the maps. Data from 592 boreholes for LL and PI and 245 boreholes for LI were used for this study. Layers were allocated into three depth ranges (1 to 2, 2 to 4 and 4 to 6)

Background: The highest concentrations of
blood glucose during the day are usually found

particularly the cardiovascular system.
Objective: To evaluate the effect of (PPH) as a

Cephalothin as a Carrier of 6-Mercaptopurine for Targeting Cancer Tissues
...Show More Authors

A lower extracellular pH is one of the few well-documented physiological differences between tumour and normal tissues. On the other hand, elevated glutathione (GSH) level has been detected in many tumours compared with healthy surrounding tissues. The compound II: 3-(9H-purin-6-yl-thio) carbonothionyl methyl-8-oxo-7-(2-thiophen-2-yl) acetamido-5-thia-1-azabicyclo-4-octo-ene-carboxylic acid was a cephalothin derivative contain 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP). Compound II react with general base catalysis in slightly acidic pH or with sulfhydryl nucleophiles to release the chemotherapeutic drug 6-MP. The generation of compound II was accomplished following multistep reaction procedures. The structure of compound II and its intermediate was confir

Synthesis, In Silico, and Biological Evaluation of Non‐Hydroxamate Benzoic Acid–Based Derivatives as Potential Histone Deacetylase Inhibitors (HDACi)
...Show More Authors
ABSTRACT<p>Unregulated epigenetic modifications, including histone acetylation/deacetylation mediated by histone acetyltransferases (HATs) and histone deacetylases (HDACs), contribute to cancer progression. HDACs, often overexpressed in cancer, downregulate tumor suppressor genes, making them crucial targets for treatment. This work aimed to develop non‐hydroxamate benzoic acid–based HDAC inhibitors (HDACi) with comparable effect to the currently four FDA‐approved HDACi, which are known for their poor solubility, poor distribution, and significant side effects. All compounds were structurally verified using FTIR, 1HNMR, 13CNMR, and mass spectrometry. In silico ana</p> ... Show More
