Pathway of total petroleum hydrocarbon in a lotic ecosystem: water and sediment of Tigris River, Iraq
...Show More Authors
Abstract<p>The monitoring of lotic ecosystems is an important issue. This study investigated the total petroleum hydrocarbons (THP) in the Tigris River within Baghdad City, Iraq, which is considered the ultimate water supply source of the city. The study included measurement of THP concentrations, distribution, and origins of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) in various matrices (water, sediment, and macrophyte) in Tigris River within Baghdad City, in addition to some environmental factors during two seasons (dry and wet) for October 2020 to April 2021. The sampling was collected from three sites along the river. Thirteen compounds were identified in the current investigation from total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs), including hexatriacontane, tetracontane, tetratetracontane, undecane, dodecane, hexane, nonane, tetradecane, hexadecane, eicosane, dortiacontane, decane, and octadecane. TPHs concentrations were arranged in the following order macrophyte > sediment > water, and the oil refinery (site 2) was the most hydrocarbon contamination due to its anthropogenic activity. The highest results varied: 54.8 mg/L for hexatriacontane in water, 258.8 mg/g for hexadecane and nonane in sediment, while macrophyte was 393 mg/g for hexadecane. The origin of TPHs in different matrices in the current investigation was pyrogenic (Anthropogenic) according to the portion of low molecular weight/high molecular weight (LMW/HMW). The oil refinery site is considered a risk site by the increasing concentration of TPHs. The THPs pollution is beside other environmental problems in Iraq need to find a quick solution to save the river.</p>

Evaluation of total oxidant status and antioxidant capacity in sera of acute-and chronic-renal failure patients
...Show More Authors
Abstract<p>Renal failure is a disease of the kidney, in which the renal excretory function is failed to process due to depression of the GFR. Renal failure is divided into acute and chronic depending on the period of the disease. The study was designed to investigate the level of oxidative stress in RF patients. Seventy-five subjects had enrolled in the study, who divided into three groups equally, in which they are healthy control, ARF patients, and CRF patients. The results had shown a significant (P<0.01) increase in the level of TOS for RF patients when compared with control. Also, a significant difference in the level of TOS has been observed between ARF and CR</p> ... Show More

Activated Bentonite for Removal Nickle and Vanadium from Petroleum Distillates
...Show More Authors

The present work is to investigate the feasibility of removal vanadium (V) and nickel (Ni) from Iraqi heavy gas oil using activated bentonite. Different operating parameters such as the degree of bentonite activation, activated bentonite loading, and operating time was investigated on the effect of heavy metal removal efficiency. Experimental results of adsorption test show that Langmuir isotherm predicts well the experimental data and the maximum bentonite uptake of vanadium was 30 mg/g. The bentonite activated with 50 wt% H2SO4 shows a (75%) removal for both Ni and V. Results indicated that within approximately 5 hrs, the vanadium removal efficiencies were 33, 45, and 60% at vanadium loadings of 1

Transboundary hydrogeology and controlling factors of euphrates water chemistry: Insights from hydrochemistry, stable isotopes, and residence times in Syria and Western Iraq
...Show More Authors

Arid and semi-arid climates are critical for water security in sustainable river systems. The Euphrates River in western Iraq has been increasingly stressed by both geogenic and anthropogenic factors. This study analyzed hydro-geochemical processes, recharge dynamics, and groundwater flow modeling in western Iraq. Additionally, stable isotope tracing (δ¹⁸O, Cl⁻) integrated with hydro-chemical parameters was used to assess water quality and river-aquifer connectivity in both Syria and western Iraq. A total of 144 groundwater samples were collected annually across 12 stations in western Iraq. Surface water and groundwater data were collected from previous studies at 13 stations in Syria. Results revealed slightly alkaline freshwater con

A Novel Water Quality Index for Iraqi Surface Water
...Show More Authors

The study aims to build a water quality index that fits the Iraqi aquatic systems and reflects the environmental reality of Iraqi water. The developed Iraqi Water Quality Index (IQWQI) includes physical and chemical components. To build the IQWQI, Delphi method was used to communicate with local and global experts in water quality indices for their opinion regarding the best and most important parameter we can use in building the index and the established weight of each parameter. From the data obtained in this study, 70% were used for building the model and 30% for evaluating the model. Multiple scenarios were applied to the model inputs to study the effects of increasing parameters. The model was built 4 by 4 until it reached 17 parame

Resveratrol attenuates staphylococcal enterotoxin B-activated immune cell metabolism via upregulation of miR-100 and suppression of mTOR signaling pathway
...Show More Authors

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is triggered by a variety of insults, such as bacterial and viral infections, including SARS-CoV-2, leading to high mortality. In the murine model of ARDS induced by Staphylococcal enterotoxin-B (SEB), our previous studies showed that while SEB triggered 100% mortality, treatment with Resveratrol (RES) completely prevented such mortality by attenuating inflammation in the lungs. In the current study, we investigated the metabolic profile of SEB-activated immune cells in the lungs following treatment with RES. RES-treated mice had higher expression of miR-100 in the lung mononuclear cells (MNCs), which targeted mTOR, leading to its decreased expression. Also, Single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA seq)

Flood Management of Diyala River
...Show More Authors

Diyala Governorate was recently exposed to high flood waves discharged from Hemrin Dam. Since the dam was at its full capacity during the flood period, these waves were discharged to the Diyala River. Because of the reduction in Diyala River capacity to 750m3/s, the cities and villages on both sides of the river banks were inundated. Thus, the study's objective is to design a flood escape out of the Diyala River, to discharge the flood wave through it. The flood escape simulation was done by using HEC- RAS software. Two hundred twenty-three cross sections for the escape and 30 cross-sections of the Diyala River were used as geometric data. Depending on the geological formation that the escape passed t

Correlation between Levels of Serum Prolactin and Total Sialic Acids Concentrations in Fertile and Infertile Women
...Show More Authors

The aim of this study was investigating the correlation between elevation of Prolactin levels and the increase of the concentrations of total sialic acids. The study was performed on 149 women consisted of 93 infertile hyperprolactinimic women (patients), age ranged16-38 years old, and 56 normoprolactinemic women as a control group, 18-37 years old. Serum prolactin (PRL) and gonadotroph hormones (Follicle stimulating hormone FSH and Luteinizing hormone LH) were measured using enzymatic immunoassay (EIA) method, resorcinol method for serum total sialic acids (SIA). Patients were divided into four groups, each group represented the level of prolactin of infertile women as follow: G1= (21-30), G2= (31-40), G3= (41-50), and G4= (51-60) ng/mL. S
