Dynamic Response Assessment of the Nigerian 330kV Transmission System
...Show More Authors

This paper presents the dynamic responses of generators in a multi-machine power system.  The fundamental swing equations for a multi-machine stability analysis are revisited. The swing equations are solved to investigate the influence of a three-phase fault on the network largest load bus. The Nigerian 330kV transmission network was used as a test case for the study. The time domain simulation approach was explored to determine if the system could withstand a 3-phase fault. The stability of the transmission network is estimated considering the dynamic behaviour of the system under various contingency conditions. This study identifies Egbin, Benin, Olorunsogo, Akangba, Sakete, Omotosho and Oshogbo as the key buses w

A Real-Coded Genetic Algorithm with System Reduction and Restoration for Rapid and Reliable Power Flow Solution of Power Systems
...Show More Authors

The paper presents a highly accurate power flow solution, reducing the possibility of ending at local minima, by using Real-Coded Genetic Algorithm (RCGA) with system reduction and restoration. The proposed method (RCGA) is modified to reduce the total computing time by reducing the system in size to that of the generator buses, which, for any realistic system, will be smaller in number, and the load buses are eliminated. Then solving the power flow problem for the generator buses only by real-coded GA to calculate the voltage phase angles, whereas the voltage magnitudes are specified resulted in reduced computation time for the solution. Then the system is restored by calculating the voltages of the load buses in terms

GENERATION RESCHEDULING FOR ALLEVIATING OVER LOADS CAUSED BY CONTINGENC
...Show More Authors

Contingency analysis is a valuable tool for a reliable planning and secure operation of a power system. Centingency analysis techniques must consider the impact of voltage effects as well as line flow effects. If the potential outage of a line or a generator would result in the overl rload of another line, then the system is said to be vulnerable. Without line overloading correction it may cause cascade outages and lead to failures in the whole system.

An efficient contingency analysis model for detecting both branch MVA flow violations and bus voltage limit violations is presented. A fast technique has been developed for automatic contingency ranking and selection of contingency cases for a power system contingency analysis stud

DESIGN OF A SLIDING MODE CONTROLLER FOR A TORA SYSTEM

his paper presents the design of a sliding mode controller for an uncertain model of a TORA system (Translational Oscillations with a Rotational Actuator) as a two DOF underactuated mechanical system. The switching function is selected to make the TORA system an asymptotically stable mass-spring system with a nonlinear damping effect when the sliding mode controller constrains the state to the sliding manifold. This sliding mode controller is derived here according to a new formula consisting of continuous and discontinuous parts. The main obstacle in the controller design is the uncertainty in the switching function, which appears in the controller formula. The sliding controller is found effective in bringing the system state to the ne

The oxidation of phenol in aqueous solution was studied at atmospheric pressure in a batch
reactor. Fenton reaction was used to degrade this component. Phenol (50 - 100 ppm) oxidation was carried out in the acidic medium range of (pH=2.7 - 5.8) under mild conditions of temperature (28 - 48°C), stochiometric excess percentage of H2O2 (S.EH2O2%) of (0 - 100%), and Fe(II) to phenol concentrations ratio of (0 - 0.63). The results indicate that the oxidation by Fenton reaction was an efficient method to eliminate phenol, also the amount of catalyst and temperature had the large effect on the phenol degradation. Finally the simple kinetic model for the reaction was established.

Construction joints are frequently used in engineering structures for various reasons. When the size of the structure is relatively large stoppage of concrete casting at certain locations is necessary. Stoppage of casting may also occurs due to sudden failure of mixing machines, or when the concrete stock ingredients runs out of materials, or when weather conditions do not permit casting operations to continue. If stoppage of concreting occurs, a joint between old and new concrete forms, it is then necessary to evaluate the horizontal shear capacity at the interface between old and new concretes to prevent progressive slip from taking place and to insure satisfactory performance of the structure.

Automatic detection and classification of cardiac arrhythmias is important for diagnosis of cardiac abnormality. This paper shows a method to accurately classify ECG arrhythmias through a combination of slantlet transform and artificial neural network (ANN). The ability of the slantlet transform to decompose signal at various resolutions allows accurate extraction of features from non-stationary signals like ECG. The low frequency coefficients, which contain the maximum information about the arrhythmia, were selected from the slantlet decomposition. These coefficients are fed to a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) artificial neural network which classifies the arrhythmias. In the present work the ECG data is taken from standard MIT- BIH datab

RELIABILITY-BASED DESIGN PROCEDURE OF AXIALLY LOADED PILES
...Show More Authors

Geotechnical engineering involves many different and complex materials and many different mechanisms of behaviour. The direct use of experience as a guide to the prediction and design is effective provided these are understood. Geotechnical engineering is a relatively new science. Its successful application to prediction requires realistic assumptions to be made, and predictions must be tested against reality. Methods of prediction need then to be refined. An example of the importance of making realistic assumptions is examined in this paper. It includes the effects of soil properties on the ultimate capacity of axially loaded piles.
Better analysis offers better prediction and better understanding. Both are only possible when reality
