Seed priming of sorghum cultivars by gibberellic and salicylic acids to improve seedling growth under irrigation with saline water

An experiment was conducted in pots under field conditions during fall seasons of 2017 and 2018. This study aimed to improve a weak growth of seedlings under salt stress in sorghum. Three factors were studied. 1st factor was three cultivars (Inqath, Rabeh, and Buhoth70). 2nd factor was seed priming (primed and unprimed seed). Seed were primed by soaking for 12 hours in a solution containing 300 + 70 mg L−1 of gibberellic (GA3) and salicylic (SA) acids, respectively. 3rd factor was irrigation with saline water (6, 9 and 12 dS m−1) resulting from dissolving sodium chloride in distilled water in addition to control treatment (distilled water). Randomized complete block design was used with four replications. In both seasons: the results showed that both of Bohoth70 cultivar and primed seed were superior by giving the highest values of plant height, leaf area, dry seedling weight, leaf content of chlorophyll and proline and the lowest ratio of sodium to potassium. Averages of traits above decreased as the concentration of sodium chloride increased, except leaves content of proline and sodium to potassium ratio which increased with increase of salt stress. Treatment of 12 dS m−1 caused seedlings death for primed or unprimed seed of all studied cultivars. It can be concluded that priming of seed improved their performance to tolerate salt stress compared to unprimed seed.

Seed priming of sorghum cultivars to tolerate salt stress

A laboratory experiment was carried out in the laboratories of College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences, University of Baghdad in 2017. Three factors were studied; Sorghum bicolor L. cultivars (Inqath, Rabeh and Buhoth70), primed and unprimed seed, and salt stress (0, 6, 9 and 12 dS.m−1). The aim was to improve germination and seedling growth under salt stress. Effect of irrigation by saline magnetized water on seed germination and seedling growth of wheat Triticum aestivum

The effect of saline magnetized water irrigation on seed germination and seedling growth of wheat cultivar Iraq were studied. Irrigation water was supplemented with different levels of Sodium chloride 6, 12 or 18 mmhos/ cm in addition control treatment, and passed through a proper magnetic felid with 1000, 1250, 1500 or 2000 gaus in addition control treatment. Seed weight effect on germination properties and seedling growth of some cultivars of lupine

A laboratory experiment was carried out and repeated at field of College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences, University of Baghdad in 2017. First factor was three cultivars of lupine 'Giza-1', 'Giza-2' and 'Hamburg'. Second factor was three seed weights (lower weight, medium weight and higher weight) which was following the cultivars factor. Nested design was used. Seed priming effect on field emergence and grain yield in sorghum

Most cultivars of sorghum have low field emergence as common problem. Three experiments were carried out at Agriculture College, Baghdad University. Effect of seed priming on grain growth rate and effective filling period in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars

Effect of soaking with bread yeast extract on sorghum seed germination under salt stress conditions

Salt stress negatively affects germination and seedling growth. Sorghum cultivars (Bohuth70, Inqath and Rabeh), seed soaking in dry yeast extract (3, 6 and 9 g l-1) in addition to dry seeds and electrical conductivity (4, 10 and 16 dS m-1) were studied. Traits of germination ratio at first and final counts, lengths of radicle and plumule, seedling dry weight and seedling vigour index were studied. Field Emergence Affected by Zea Mays L. Cultivars and Seed Soaking in Acids of Ascorbic, Citric and Humic

A field experiment was carried out during the spring season 2019 and 2020 to obtain a fast, uniform, and high field emergence ratio of maize seeds under a wide range of environmental conditions.
