The Impact of Ascending Levels of Crude Oil Pollution on Growth of Olive ( Olea europaea Linn) Seedlings

A study on the impact of ascending levels of crude oil on the growth of transplanted seedlings ( March2005 ) of Olive (Olea europaea Linn) was carried out at the experimental area of Iraq Natural History Museum and Research centre / Baghdad University (Bab-Al-Madham –Baghdad)  grown under field condition  and continued till April 2008.The experiment was laid out in complete randomized design ( CRD ) with five levels of pollution (0.0 , 0.5 , 1.0 , 2.0 and 3.0 liter / seedling ) poured at the soil surface , each seedling represented one replicate and was replicated four times . Data collected from the experiment were visual symptoms , percents of seedlings death, plant height and total  dry weight  of harvested plants. The results indicated that crude oil pollution caused an adverse effect on the Olive (Olea europaea Linn). The crude oil led to leaf  chlorosis , dryness and death of seedlings. The adverse effects were proportional with the levels of pollution. Plant heights and total dry weights were significantly reduced (p< 0.05) as a consequence of pollution. Results of the study indicated  that the effect of pollution clearly appeared after three weeks at the high levels then the symptoms extended to lower levels during the first six months. The study showed that treated plants with low levels of crude oil pollution were less  growth but survived and stayed alive,  while the higher levels led to  seedlings death. It was obvious that the adversely  affected plants  could not be able to recover even after 27 months after pollution, the time of the experiment.

Consequences of Soil Crude Oil Pollution on Some Wood Properties of Olive Trees

Effect of aqueous extract of olive (Olea europaea) fruit on lipid profile in female rabbits

The activity of the aqueous extract of Olea europaea was tested at concentrations of 8, 15 or 20 mg/kg of body weight on lipid profile in twenty female local rabbits. Evaluation of the effectiveness of the crude juice of Olive (Olea europaea) in reducing the percentages of chromosomal aberration and micronuclei in albino mice

This research was carried out to evaluate the activity of crude juice of Olive on some cytogenetic parameters in mice like chromosomal aberration (CAs) and micronuclei formation(MN). The results showed that there was no significant difference between the crude juice (green and black)in CAs(3.77,4.10)and MN(0.25,0.25) in comparison with negative control (3.39,0.22)respectively. The interaction effect between the crude before and after treatment with mutagen MMC showed that the crude is one of the vital inhibitors of the mutagen by its ability in reducing the percentages of both the CAs and MN in bone marrow cells in mice.

The inhibition effect of crude juice of olive Olea europeae on cancer cell line Rhabdomyosarcoma (RD)

The inhibition effect of crude juice of green and black olive on cancer cell line (RD) in vitro has been studied by depending on micro titration system . Eleven different concentration starting from (916-960) mg/ml of crude juice respectively ,for three periods of exposure(24-48-72)hours. The resulted showed that the inhibition effect dependent on type of olive fruit juice ,concentration of dose ,time of exposure and the high concentration of both type of olive juice increased the growth of cell line while other concentration caused decrease in different rates ,moreover the black juice was more effective than green and 48 hours' time exposure was the best for inhibition.
