This study examines the intonational realization of directive speech acts employed in the speeches of Dr. Haifaa Younis and Kamala Harris. It adopts an integrated analytical framework that combines Searle’s (1976) Speech Act Theory, Bach and Harnish’s (1979) taxonomy of directive speech acts, and Brazil’s (1997) Discourse Intonation Model. The study employs a qualitative research design. The findings reveal that both speakers predominantly employ the proclaiming fall tone to realize directive speech acts. Younis primarily uses commands, prohibitions, and advice to reinforce her religious authority, whereas Harris frequently employs urging and warnings to persuade, motivate, and engage the audience while maintaining rhetorical force. Furthermore, the findings indicate that neither speaker predominantly adopts a dominant discourse role. Instead, Younis employs discourse intonation to reinforce Islamic religious principles by guiding the audience in accordance with Islamic moral values, whereas Harris uses discourse intonation to persuade the audience to support her political leadership and electoral campaign. It is hoped that this study will contribute to a better understanding of the interaction between discourse intonation and directive speech acts and how this interaction facilitates persuasion in religious and political discourse.
Discourse markers are expressions used to connect sentences to what comes before or after and indicate a speaker's attitude to what he is saying. As linguistic items, they have important functions in discourses of various styles or registers. And being connective elements, discourse markers relate sentences, clauses and paragraphs to each other. "One of the most prominent function of discourse markers, however, is to signal the kinds of relations a speaker perceives between different parts of the discourse". (Lenk 1997: 2) Through political discourse, different types of discourse markers are used. This paper deals with the importance and functions of discourse markers and tries to shed light on the kinds of discourse markers used in polit

logical that formality is usually accompanied with more polite forms and higher degree of

This study presents certain modifications done to the conditions set by Searle
(1969: 57) concerning the speech act of promising in order to render them to selected
sayings of Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) and Jesus Christ (P.B.U.H.) and to
political texts. These modifications make the conditions of the speech act of
promising appropriate for sincere promises made by the Messengers of God since
they deliver their Messages of God but they are unable, as Messengers, to fulfill
God’s promises which they make as part of their Messages and by representatives of
States who deliver speeches on behalf of their Governments. These are the only two
situations where the speakers can make promises and do not fulfill these prom
