Background: genital herpes simplex virus infection in pregnancy poses a major risk to the fetus and it has been associated with bad obstetric out come causing preterm labor, intrauterine growth retardation and spontaneous abortion. This study was conducted to determine if premature rupture of membranes before 37 weeks of gestational age are observed with subclinical shedding of herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Patients and methods: Cervical swabs were taken from 75 women with a history of preterm premature rupture of membranes before 37 weeks of gestation, and 20 women with normal
obstetrical history for the presence of HSV antigen using Enzyme linked Immuno Sorbent Assay (ELISA) method.
Results: HSV antigen was detected in 37 swabs(49.3%) which revealed a significant association with preterm premature rupture membranes(PPROM) compared to control group(P<0.05).The majority of HSV infected women were asymptomatic 34(91.9%), and 23(56.1%) of the cases was associated with history of recurrent PPROM, compared to those women with history of single PPROM.
Conclusion: The risk of maternal transmission of HSV to the fetus or newborn is a major health concern and the high rates of undiagnosed or asymptomatic HSV infections complicate the issue of prevention. With advent of serologic test that can reliably detect the virus in asymptomatic patient. Maternal HSV screening now is mandatory.
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a common human pathogen that causes severe infections in newborns and immunocompromised patients. Conjunctivitis or corneal epithelial keratitis is caused by HSV type 1 all over the world and at all times of the year. The present study was aimed at detecting HSV in patients suffering from conjunctivitis. One hundred and ten (110) clinical samples (90 patients and 20 controls, both males and females) of eye conjunctiva swabs were collected from patients of different ages. The samples were analyzed using qPCR and ELISA techniques. The qPCR results revealed that HSV was present in 47 (52.2%) of the 90 patients who were infected. Of these patients, 25 (48.0%) were males and 22 (57.8%) were females, indicati

The present study attempts to shed light on one of the factors that may play a role as a causative agent in these neurological diseases by finding a correlation between the Herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2 in patients with Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis by detecting the virus in these patients using immunological techniques. Sixty patients with neurological diseases (40 patients with Multiple sclerosis and 20 patients with Parkinson’s disease) who’s ages ranged from (17-76) years have been investigated. Samples wer

Hence, viral infection of the oral mucosa may be involved in the pathogenesis of oral lichen planus, Taking in to consideration the oncogenic potential of HSV-1, this study aimed to assess the presence of Herpes Simplex Virus type one by direct immunoflourescent in oral lichen planus. This study aimed to assess the presence of HSV type1 by direct immunofluorescent in histopathologically diagnosed OLP Material and Method: Twenty formalin fixed embedded tissue blocks of oral lichen planus with 2 Positive control cases were taken from patients having infection with herpes labialis, US Biological herpes simplex virus-1 Glycoprotein

The samples were collected in the time frame between November 2017 and April 2018. The ages of the patients that were investigated were between (17-76) years and compared to a control group consisting of 25 samples collected from apparently healthy individuals. All the studied groups were subjected to the measurement of anti-HSV 1, 2 IgG antibodies by the means

Show MoreSystemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is one of the autoimmune disorders, generated by a production of specific autoantibodies against self-antigens before the occurrence of clinical symptoms. The etiology of disease is still unknown, although there have been several infectious agents that have been associated with SLE development, especially in genetically predisposed individuals. Herpes simplex virus-I and -II (HSV-I and -II) and Toxoplasma gondiiare two infectious agents that have been suggested to be involved in SLE etiology. Accordingly, the present study assessed anti- HSV-I and -II and anti-T. gondii IgG and IgM antibodies by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay in sera of 64 SLE female patients and 32 healthy control women. Estimates indicate that at least 2 billion people have been infected with the hepatitis B virus (HBV), with more than 378 million people being chronic carriers. Those individuals at higher risk for acquiring HBV and transmitting disease like pregnant women should be screened for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) to prevent transmission by vaccination and operation. Aim of study: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of HBsAg and its associated parameters in pregnant women who referred to antenatal clinic in Baghdad Province. Methods: The 234 apparently healthy pregnant women and their families, husbands and children were se

Objective: To test the absolute nucleated red blood cells counts at birth in infants who are born after prelabour rupture of membranes.
Methods: A prospective study conducted in AL-Kadhymia Teaching Hospital. Hundred pregnant women were included in this study. Fifty pregnant women who had prelabour rupture of membranes considered as group (1), other fifty pregnant women with intact membranes considered as group (2) through a period of one year.
