Haematological Parameters Alternations Resulted by Exposing Albino Mice to Shisha Smoke

In this study, effects of shisha smoking on some blood components were evaluated in (120) male adult mice. The animals were divided into four groups according to smoke types (cigarette, shisha, cigarette +shisha) in addition to control groups which exposed to fresh air only. A special inhalation chamber designed locally has been used to expose the animals. Exposed to cigarette smoke was done for 5 min/day while exposed to shisha smoke for 15 min /day /7days/weeks for 4,8,12 weeks. Blood samples were collected to evaluate some hematological variables. The results showed that RBC, WBC count, Hb, PCV, differential leukocyte (Lymphocyte, Monocyte, Neutrphils) were significantly high (P≤0.001) in groups which exposed to shisha smoke as compared with those exposed to cigarette smoke. These values were increased with increasing of exposure periods and become clearer in groups exposed for 12 weeks. It was concluded that shisha smoke contains high concentrations of toxicants as compared to cigarette smoke, and cause clear increase in some blood parameters that may led to cardiovascular disease.

Indoor Air Concentrations of Heavy Metals in Two Shisha Smoke Cafés in Baghdad

Shisha smoke represents one of the causes of indoor air pollution. Heavy metals represent the main components in shisha smoke. In this research study, the indoor concentrations of heavy metals in shisha smoke café sites was investigated, samples were taken from two café sites (site1, site 2) which differ in their volume. Site1 volume was 77m3, while site 2 was 437.5m3. Sample were taken by using a low volume sampler (sniffer), and then examined by the Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). The results showed that indoor air shisha smoke samples for both experimental sites have shown a significant amount of heavy metals as compared with control sampling values. The mean concentration values of (Pb, Zn, Co, Ni, Cr) in site 1 were (11.004,

Effect of Benzene on Some haeMatological Parameters of Oil Station Workers

Benzene is a hydrocarbon chemical consisting of six atoms arranged in a ring structure. At normal ambient temperatures; it is a liquid, which evaporates rapidly at room temperature and is highly flammable. It has a characteristic of aromatic odor and is slightly soluble in water (1.5 g/liter at 20ºC) but miscible with most other organic solvents [1].           Long-term inhalation of benzene causes blood disorders. It specifically affects bone marrow [2]. And it may cause anemia, excessive bleeding, damage to the immune system and DNA [3, 4]. Increased incidence of leukemia (cancer of the tissues that form white blood cells) has been observed in people occupationally exposed to
