Petrography and Geochemical Relationships of the Ultramafic Rocks in Galalah area within Erbil Governorate, NE Iraq

The current research to study the petrography, mineralogy and geochemical relationships of the ultramafic rocks in the Galalah area within Erbil Governorate, at the Unstable Shelf in the Imbricate Zone, to determine the origin of the ultramafic rocks.

Dunite and Harzburgite are the most abundant rock bodies in the study area, and they represent most of the outer surface exposure of the ultramafic rock aggregates. The dunite rocks are characterized by pale brown color on the altered surface that is broken into olive green and dark green lithic. Dunite represents a homogenous lithologic feature that mainly consists predominately of olivine with accessory spinel and traces of orthopyroxene. While the harzburgite appears as a massive rock body consisting of olivine, orthopyroxene, and clinopyroxene. These rocks are mainly characterized by alteration to serpentinite, with accessory chromian spinel, secondary magnetite, chlorite, and talc.

The studied ultramafic rocks are predominately rich in ferromagnesian minerals of less silica content, and other major elements affected by serpentinization are causing the deviation of elements. They have a strong decrease in sodium and calcium oxides relative to MgO and verified the silica and alumina with MgO and a slight increase in iron oxide.

The low values of TiO2 in dunite and harzburgite are characteristic property of the Alpine type ophiolites during the primary process of the mantle in its upper part, before the tectonic emplacement of the ultramafic rocks, and also due to partial melting degree for the asthenospheric mantle. The MREE depletion relative to HREE and LREE may be attributed to the hornblende absence and the presence of olivine and pyroxenes minerals and/or to the source rock features.

The U-shaped patterns of REE and their ratios are typical properties of ophiolitic ultramafic rocks, which are compatible with the supra-subduction zone. During the partial melting, the negative anomalies of Nb in ultramafic rocks with sequestration of the Nb concentration by sphene and ilmenite in various types of the source rocks have also been attributed to the crust contamination. These are also characterized by island arc conditions, and its depletion in the studied rocks may indicate the fore-arc tectonic environments

The Engineering Properties and Geochemical Relationship For The Volcaniclastic Rocks Of The Muqdadiya Formation In Hemrin Area, NE. IRAQ

Volcaniclastic rocks of Al Muqdadiya Formation (Pliocene) in Injana area, southern Hemrin anticline, NE of Iraq, were studied ( petrographically, physically, mineralogically and geochemically , as well as the engineering properties) to assess the suitability of volcaniclastic rocks to use them in industry as refractories. The results show that the physical and engineering properties change with the temperature change. The bulk density and the specific gravity increase by increasing temperature while the apparent porosity, water sorption and the linear shrinkage decrease. On the other hand the compressive strength increase by increasing temperature. The volcaniclastics have very low thermal conductivi

Gabbroic Rocks in Mawat Ophiolite Complex, NE Iraq: Geochemical Constraints on their Tectonogenesis

The Mawat Ophiolite Complex located in north-eastern Iraq represents part of the Iraqi Zagros Suture Zone, located at the border between the Arabian-Iranian plates. It consists of peridotite, gabbro, subvolcanic sheeted dykes and volcanic pillow lava. The geochemical signatures of the gabbro show a significant variation in major elements concentration, low concentrations of TiO2 (0.06-0.36 wt.%), Na2O (0.44-0.98 wt.%), K2O (0.024-0.48 wt.%), P2O5 (0.002-0.009 wt.%) and moderate variations in SiO2 (46.13-53.77 wt.%) with wide ranges and high concentration of Al2O3 (13.87-22.18 wt.%), Fe2O3 (0.04-2.95 wt.%), FeO (2.68-8.76 w

Mineralogical and geochemical aspects of sand dunes in Missan Governorate, Southeastern Iraq

Twenty sand samples were collected from the sand dunes of Missan fields, Southeastern Iraq. Grain size distribution, mineralogical and chemical composition were studied for the total, medium, and fine-size sand fractions. The grain size analysis shows that the sand is the main component, followed by silt and trace of clay. The predominant grain size of sand is 0.250 to 0.500 mm, which forms more than 57.28 %, which indicates that these dunes were formed under the influence of relatively strong winds and the sedimentary material is close to the source. The light components are quartz, feldspar, and different rock fragments, while the heavy mineral assemblages are composed of opaque minerals, chlorite, mica, and amphiboles.

Mineralogical and Geochemical analysis of the sediments surrounding the Main Drain Area, Middle of Iraq

Fifty five surface and subsurface soil samples were taken from the area between Tigris and Euphrates Rivers along the Main Drain course from north Baghdad to Basrah to evaluate the geochemical, physical characteristics and the probability contamination of these samples. The study area is covered by Quaternary sediments of complex alternation of sand, silt and clay. Significant variation in the textural content of the present soils is observed, where the northern and southern parts are characterized by silt predominance, while sand is prevailing in the central parts as a result of the extensive spreading of aeolian deposits represented mostly by sand dunes. Mineralogical analysis explains wide variations in the heavy minerals distribution

Surface-Subface Geochemical and Mineralogical Study of Gypcrete in Alexandria Area Central Iraq

Gypsiferous soil deposits (Gypcrete) are weakly consolidate earthy mixture of secondary gypsum, sand and clay. It is formed in arid and semi- arid area with annual precipitation rainfall less than 400mm. These sediments occur in surface and subsurface in region of little rainfall and rapid evaporation. This research deals with the study of gypcrete in Alexandria to improve the mineralogical and geochemical properties of the gypcrete. The gypcrete soil is used as raw material to produce the plaster for building purposes. Three samples of gypcrete were chemically and geochemically analyzed. The common mineral is howed in 0-0.5m Gypsum followed by Calcite in 0-1m and Quartz in 1-1.5m due to leaching and infiltration by rainfall as well as it
