Enhance the delineation of masked structures in southern Iraq by applying the Biharmonic operator to their gravity field.

The gravity field of southern Iraq shows steep gradient of regional trend. The gravity contours over the anticline structures in this area do not show the closure characteristic of these structures. The effect of lateral density variation for Hormuz Salt complicates the case in the area. Higher derivatives are one of the means that have been used to remove the effect of such regional gravity variations, which can easily mask significant structures. Biharmonic Operator is used to delineate these distort structures, follow their extent and at the same time distinguish new features. The Biharmonic operator manipulation has ability to suppress the effect of regional and enhance the local anomalies. The problem with higher derivatives operation is that, it enhance dramatically high frequency components of gravity field, but with smoothing the result is remarkable. A synthetic model is used to support the idea, and then the operation is applied to the gravity field of southern Iraq. Many new features are deduced and new extents of the old known ones are determined.

The Jurassic and Deep Structures Inferred from Gravity Data Depending on Stripping Technique for The Uppermost Layers in Central and Southern Iraq

The gravity anomalies of the Jurassic and deep structures were obtained by stripping the gravity effect of Cretaceous and Tertiary formations from the available Bouguer gravity map in central and south Iraq. The gravity effect of the stripped layers was determined depending on the density log or the density density obtained from the sonic log. The density relation with the seismic velocity of Gardner et al (1974) was used to obtain density from sonic logs in case of a lack of density log. The average density of the Cretaceous and Tertiary formation were determined then the density contrast of these formations was obtained. The density contrast and thickness of all stratigraphic formations in the area between the sea level to t

Utilizing Seismic Attributes to Enhance Deduction of the subtle stratigraphic trap in Mishrif Formation at Dujaila oil field, Southern East of Iraq

Three seismic instantaneous attributes (phase, frequency, and variance) were utilized on 3D-seismic poststack migrated data, covering 617.31 km2, integrated with data of two wells (Du-1 and Du-2) in Dujaila oil field, southeast of Iraq. They gave good results in detecting reef buildups and confirmed the existence of the stratigraphic hydrocarbon trap that was not obvious in the conventional seismic amplitude sections. They display several seismic criteria in attribute sections for recognizing reef buildups and hydrocarbon accumulation, such as phase reversal, low frequency, and high amplitude variance. The seismic attributes emphasized that the stratigraphic trap of reef rudist buildups with hydrocarbon content is con

Gravity and Magnetic Interpretation to Study Deep Crustal Structures In Karbala and Surrounding Areas-Central Iraq

Gravity and magnetic data were used to study the deep crustal structures in Karbala and surrounding areas in central Iraq. The space window method was used to separate the residual from regional anomalies of gravity and magnetic data, the spaces of window are equal to 48,36 and 24 km. The Total Horizontal Derivative (THD) techniques and local wavenumber of gravity and magnetic are used to identify the faults and their trends with the basement rocks.  The N45W, N45E, N-S and rarely E-W trends of faults are detected in the basement rock. It is believed that some of these faults extending from the basement to the uppermost layer of the sedimentary rocks.

Numerical Simulation of Immiscible CO2-Assisted Gravity Drainage Process to Enhance Oil Recovery

The Gas Assisted Gravity Drainage (GAGD) process has become one of the most important processes to enhance oil recovery in both secondary and tertiary recovery stages and through immiscible and miscible modes.  Its advantages came from the ability to provide gravity-stable oil displacement for improving oil recovery, when compared with conventional gas injection methods such as Continuous Gas Injection (CGI) and Water – Alternative Gas (WAG). Vertical injectors for CO2   gas were placed at the top of the reservoir to form a gas cap which drives the oil towards the horizontal oil producing wells which are located above the oil-water-contact. The GAGD process was developed and tested in vertical wells to increase oil r

Delineation of Quaternary Aquifers by Using Long 2D Imaging in Southern Al-Shihaby Area (Wasit Governorate), Eastern Iraq

An electrical survey was carried out by using 2D imaging technique at (15)
station. The study area is located southern Al-Shihaby area, south-east of Wasit
governorate, Eastern Iraq. The numbers of the employed electrodes were (120) and
the (a) spacing equal to (10m), and the total length of survey line is (1200m). The
inverse models of 2D imaging showed one Quaternary aquifer located in the
Quaternary deposits which comprises in alluvial fan and wind deposits of
(Pleistocene – Holocene) ages. Layers of aquifer consist of gravel and sand with
little silt. Low resistivity values reflected the presence of clay layers, and increasing
salinity of water gradually with the depth. The aquifer occurs at minimum depth

Yamama Reservoir Characterization in the West Qurna Oil Field, Southern Iraq

Yamama Formation (Valanginian-Early Hauterivian) is one of the most important oil production reservoirs in southern Mesopotamian Zone. The Yamama Formation in south Iraq comprises outer shelf argillaceous limestones and oolitic, pelloidal, pelletal and pseudo-oolitic shoal limestones. The best oil prospects are within the oolite shoals. Yamama Formation is divided into seven zones: Upper Yamama, Reservoir Units YR-A & YR-B separated by YB-1, and YR-B Lower & two Tight zones: low (porosity, permeability and oil saturation) with variable amounts of bitumen. These reservoir units are thought to be at least partially isolated from each other.

Applying Water Quality Index Technique to Estimate the Euphrates River Suitability for different uses in Samawa and Nasiriya, Southern Iraq

Water salinity assessment is fundamental to the management of water resources. The objective of this research is to calculate the water quality index of the Euphrates River by using mathematical methods. As well as to evaluate the water for various uses by estimating the inorganic pollution in the river water in two sites: Samawa and Nasiriya sites. Based on physiochemical characteristics such as pH, TDS, EC,  and concentrations of the major ions of calcium (Ca2+), sodium (Na+), magnesium (Mg2+), potassium (K+), sulphate (SO42-)  and Chloride (Cl-), bicarbonate ions (HCO3-), and minor elements of nitrate (NO32-

Delineation the effect of saline groundwater on the resistivity of middle part of Dammam Formation southwest of Samawah city, Southern Iraq

The study area intendes for agricultural investment and establishment stations of water pumping for human use to the nearby areas, southwest of Samawah city. Twelve Two-Dimension (2-D) survey points were performed by using Wenner-Schlumberger array configuration to take the measurements. The inverse models of two survey point appear the effect of the saline groundwater that raises from Rus Formation, which caused a significant reduction in resistivity of the groundwater-bearing zone within middle Dammam Formation along the fault plane.
