The aim of this work is to evaluate some mechanical and physical
properties (i.e. the impact strength, hardness, flexural strength,
thermal conductivity and diffusion coefficient) of
(epoxy/polyurethane) blend reinforced with nano silica powder (2%
wt.). Hand lay-up technique was used to manufacture the composite
and a magnetic stirrer for blending the components. Results showed
that water had affected the bending flexural strength and hardness,
while impact strength increased and thermal conductivity decreased.
In addition to the above mentioned tests, the diffusion coefficient
was calculated using Fick’s 2nd law.
Polymer composites were prepared using epoxy resin (EP) and unsaturated polyester (UPE) as a blend matrices, which were mixed together in different percentages (starting from 90:10) of (epoxy/polyester) respectively, and ending with (50:50) of (epoxy/polyester). The optimum mixing ratio (OMR) of the components was decided upon the results of the impact strength value of these blending ratio, which showed the highest value of (16.3) KJ/m2 for the blending ratio (80:20) of (EP/UPE) respectively.
The blend with (OMR) was chosen to be reinforced with three different weight fractions of reinforcement; the 1st one was reinforced with nano titanium oxide (TiO2) with a weight fraction (2% wt.), the 2nd one was reinforced with both nano (TiO2)
Fiber reinforced polymer composite is an important material for structural application. The diversified application of FRP composite has taken center of attraction for interdisciplinary research. However, improvements on mechanical properties of this class of materials are still under research for different applications. In this research, the morphology and mechanical properties of (Epoxy/PVC) blend were investigated. (EP/PVC) blend was prepared by manual mixing of epoxy resin with different weight ratios of (Poly vinyl chloride (PVC) after dissolving it in cyclohexanon). Five sheets of polymer blends in wt% included (0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%) of PVC were prepared at room temperature. Tests were carried out to study some mechanical properties for these blends and compared with the properties of pure epoxy. The morphology of the prepared materials was examined to study the compatibility nature between the two polymers under work. It was found that the best ratio of addition is (20%) of PVC.

Show MoreThis research includes using epoxy resin and polyurethane resin to form a blend (EP+PU) with different resin ratios (90 – 10)%, (80 – 20)%, (70 – 30)%, and (60 – 40)% to achieve best ratio for impact strength as a function of better toughness; then reinforced with micro and nano (CdO) with weight fraction (0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08). Mechanical properties were studied including hardness before and after exposure to UV irradiation.
